Along with reading the book, you will also be required to complete two assignments that are explained in this packet. You will receive credit for all assigned work and you may expect summative work as we continue working with these materials at the beginning of the school year. No matter what your friends may tell you this is NOT OPTIONAL!!! There is also an OPTIONAL assignment for those who would like to receive extra credit towards a summative grade: Choose ONE novel from the list below to read and choose a project to create. If you have any questions, please feel free to Mrs. Statham for AP Language and Composition or Honors (stathdg@bay.k12.fl.us, Mrs. Seeley for DE 1101 (seelem@bay.k12.fl.us), or Mr. Sylvester for DE 1101 (sylvefr@bay.k12.fl.us) **REQUIRED**: Profiles in Courage, by John F. Kennedy Written in 1955 by the then junior senator from the state of Massachusetts, John F. Kennedy's Profiles in Courage served as a clarion call to every American. The inspiring true accounts of eight unsung heroic acts by American patriots at different junctures in our nation's history, Kennedy's book became required reading, an instant classic, and was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. Now, a half-century later, it remains a moving, powerful, and relevant testament to the indomitable national spirit and an unparalleled celebration of that most noble of human virtues. OPTIONAL: Choose one of the following classics to read. These books come from the top 100 books that all students should read as suggested by College Board. You must also complete a project in order to receive extra credit on a summative assignment. The list of options for the project is attached. 4 Profiles in Courage, by John F. Kennedy Required Reading Assessment Part I For each of the following quotes from the book, explain what the quote means and use information from the profiles to discuss in at least 8 sentences which person is the best example of the quote and why. Answers must be in complete sentences, use transitions, include details as support, and be free of grammatical errors. The true democracy, living and growing and inspiring, puts its faith in the people faith that the people will not simply elect men who will represent their views ably and faithfully, but also elect men who will exercise their conscientious judgment faith that the people will not condemn those whose devotion to principle leads them to unpopular courses, but will reward courage, respect honor and ultimately recognize right. In a democracy, every citizen, regardless of his interest in politics, holds office ; every one of us is in a position of responsibility; and, in the final analysis, the kind of government we get depends upon how we fulfill those responsibilities. We, the people, are the boss, and we will get the kind of political leadership, be it good or bad, that we demand and deserve. Without belittling the courage with which men have died, we should not forget those acts of courage with which men have lived. A man does what he must in spite of personal consequences, in spite of obstacles and dangers and pressures and that is the basis of all human morality. In whatever arena of life one may meet the challenge of courage, whatever may be the sacrifices he faces if he follows his conscience the loss of his friends, his fortune, his contentment, even the esteem of his fellow men each man must decide for himself the course he will follow. The stories of past courage can define that ingredient they can teach, they can offer hope, they can provide inspiration. But they cannot supply courage itself. For this each man must look into his own soul.
