2 is a Voyage Nevada, USA February 26 th - March 2 nd is NEVADA READING WEEK in our school and across the state. We will be celebrating with many activities throughout the week. Our goal is to encourage reading and the use of the library. NEVADA READING WEEK ACTIVITIES Door Decorating Sometime before the beginning of Week, please decorate the door to your classroom. This should follow the is a Voyage theme and include student work. The doors will be judged on Wednesday, February 28 th. There will be one winner in the primary grades and one winner in the intermediate grades. The winning class will receive a free recess and the teacher will receive a Starbucks gift card. Reader Every day we will have a mystery reader. Teachers will play the mystery reader video in their classrooms (you will get directions on where to access the video). You need to play the video for your class each day some time before lunch. Students should write their guess on the slips provided in this packet. All guesses should be placed in the bags in the library by each day. There will be one winner from each grade level every day. The winners will be announced at the end of the day. Winners will come down to the library some time the next day to get their prizes, which will be a book of choice. Class Read Swap On Monday, please find a teacher to buddy read with. students will read to a primary student and a primary student will read to an intermediate student. It is up to you to find a class to buddy read with and schedule a time.

3 Favorite Book Parade On Tuesday, we will have a primary Favorite Book Parade in the morning and an intermediate Favorite Book Parade in the afternoon. Each student in the class should bring their favorite book to school with them. When it is your assigned time, classes from the 60 s and 70 s pod will leave their pod and turn right, following around the hallway. Classes from the 40 s 50 s and Kindergarten hallway will turn left, following around the hallway. Students will hold up their favorite book as they slowly walk the hallway back to their pod, displaying their favorite book. On Wednesday, we will be having a booknic. During your assigned time, you will take your class with some books to the field, find a spot, and read! You may want to bring some blankets to read on in the grass. If we have inclement weather that day, we will need to have our booknic inside. Ms. Mazzei and Mr. Hooser, please plan on joining the intermediate booknic due to your specials that day. School-wide Treasure Hunt Once we have created the Treasure Hunts, you will receive a copy. This is something we are working on during SBCT. Dr. Seuss Relay Race On Friday at 2:20, someone will bring a Dr. Seuss hat and a book to one room in your pod. When the timer begins, you will read the book to your class. When finished, you will run to the next room in your pod, passing off the hat and book. That teacher will then read the book to their class and then pass it to the next room. You will continue the process until each person in your pod has read the book. The first pod finished, wins! Bookmark Contest Each student will design a bookmark with one of the following items: their interpretation of the theme or their favorite book/author. Make sure students put their first name, last name, and teacher on the BACK of the bookmark. After the bookmarks are completed, ask another teacher from your grade level to pick one bookmark to be turned into the library. All bookmarks have to be turned into the library by 10:00 on Friday, March 2 nd. One bookmark will be chosen from each grade level as the winner. All bookmarks turned into the library will be displayed for 2 weeks and then returned to the creators. No tracing please, original artwork only. Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) The entire school will drop everything and read every day. Teachers and staff should model this and also read during this time. An announcement will be made when it is time to begin DEAR. There will be no announcement when it will end. That will be your decision. We recommend at least 15 minutes. This will be a surprise to the students. Below is the schedule for when we will be doing this each day. This is for you so you can plan, but the students should not know when it will happen. Specialists will have books for students to read so you do not need to send books with them. Monday 10:10 Tuesday 2:20 Wednesday 11:05 Thursday 1:30 Friday 10:10 Buttons Enclosed in this packet are the circles for students to do their artwork for the buttons. Each student should decorate one. The button should reflect the theme, a favorite book, or reading in general. Teachers will come down to the library BEFORE Friday, February 23 rd to put the buttons together. The button making machine and button parts are in the library. Students will wear their buttons throughout Week. Make sure you leave enough time for students to create the artwork and for you to make the buttons. You can always have them complete the artwork the week before if you want to make sure you have enough time.

4 We will have bingo every day at 9:50. If your class will be in specials, make sure they bring their bingo board with them. The bingo terms will be book titles. You will place the titles on your bingo board before Monday, Feb 26 th so they are ready to go. We will have 2 winners each day. If you get bingo, call the library at extension Winning classes will receive a treat for the class. You will use the same bingo board each day. Attached in this packet are the titles we will be using in the bingo game. -Optional Students are encouraged to write letters/postcards to other students and staff in the school. There will be a mailbox in the hallway outside the office where the letters will be mailed. Student council will deliver these letters each day. Please make sure that everything is addressed correctly. An example is below. It's VERY simple. Please send home the letter explaining the activity. You can edit the letter to put in the day(s) and time(s) you will be calling. You can choose to call from school or change the settings in your cell phone to make the number private. If the number doesn t work, or if no one answers, then they do not get caught reading. You are not expected to make another attempt to call. -Optional If you would like to have guest readers throughout the week, please contact parents or others to come into your classrooms to read to your students. Scavenger Hunt-Homework Kelly will be giving you a scavenger hunt of activities for students to complete during the week. Give this paper to students on Friday, February 23 rd. Students who complete seven activities will receive a prize (a pencil). The completed scavenger hunt page must be turned in to the library by 2:00 on Friday. Students will be recognized and given their pencil the following week while they are in the library. Everyone who completes seven activities and turns in the paper will be entered in a drawing to earn additional prizes. Free Book Each student will choose a free new book during their library class. Any student who is absent will receive the book the next library class. in will be decorated with the voyage theme. Each class may sign up on the door for a time to bring their class to read. When it is your turn to read, have students bring books with them.
