Hinman Dental Meeting, held March 22-24, attracted 19,679 dentists, hygienists, assistants, students and other dental professionals and industry personnel to the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta. The theme, Experience Hinman: Invest in Your Future, emphasized the importance of continuing dental education for everyone, from Millennials just starting out to seasoned professionals looking to revitalize their practice. Hinman 2018 featured more than 80 worldclass dental speakers, with 31 new to Hinman; nearly 300 courses and special events, including 67 participation and interactive courses; the returning G.O.L.D. (Graduates of the Last Decade) Program; Learning Lab Co-Op; Total Health Pavilion; Career Connections; New Free Advice Booths; and more than 400 companies demonstrating the latest in dentistry. Dr. Patrick Yancey, III, Hinman s 2018 General Chair, along with his program chairs, Dr. Max Ferguson and Dr. Brad Greenway, assembled an exceptional educational program and outstanding social events during the Hinman 2018 meeting. Hinman s Night Out at the Georgia Aquarium on Friday night hosted nearly 2,400 dental professionals and guests. We are so proud to have hosted nearly 20,000 attendees this year, especially given there were so many options to obtain CE in Georgia this past year, said Dr. Yancey. It was also extremely encouraging to see so many students, as well as young dentists and dental professionals taking advantage of everything Hinman has to offer. They are the future of our profession and we were thrilled to see so many of them in the classrooms, on the exhibit floor and at our signature social events. The Keynote Session was well attended with more than 1,500 people turning out to hear Dr. Bennett Omalu, the world-renowned forensic pathologist, share his story, which is chronicled in the hit film, Concussion (starring Will Smith). Hinman 2018 drew a total of 5,271 dentists, 4,196 dental hygienists and 2,648 dental assistants. The meeting saw an increase in dental hygienists, laboratory technicians, students and exhibitors over last year, which is a testament to the strong program. Some of the most popular courses included: Dr. Harold Crossley s Marijuana s Coming to Town: Will You Be Ready? drawing 1,471 attendees, and Dr. John Svirsky s Great Cases with New Faces, which attracted 1,040 people. 2 President s Message Thanks to You, Another Great Hinman has Bloomed! Kathleen L. Robinson I extend hearty congratulations to our General Chair, Dr. Pat Yancey, on a fantastic 2018 Hinman Dental Meeting. With the 2018 Hinman being the third dental meeting to be held in Atlanta in 12 months, Pat and his excellent Program Chairs, Max Ferguson and Brad Greenway, should be extremely proud of the outcome. A big thanks to Pat s better half, Julie, for pouring blood, sweat and tears into the program, especially the excellent Special Events. I know it s been said time and again, but it is remarkable how many speakers and scouts from other dental meetings approach us with compliments on how special our March meeting is. The dedicated work from ALL of our Hinman members is a vital part of what makes our meeting one of the most respected dental meetings in the entire country. By requiring members to fulfill a minimum of eight hours of service during the March meeting, we are fostering members who are fully engaged in our Society. It shows and we thank you! In addition to the speakers and educational programs presented, Pat gave us some phenomenal parties to attend this year. The General Chair and President s Reception at Mercedes-Benz stadium was perfect in every way with plenty of great food, libations, and ample seating. Hinman s Night Out at the Aquarium was equally fun. It was great to celebrate with our teams (if we recognized them in their masks!) and we filled up the entire aquarium! Well, we left room for the fish I hope you were able to attend the Keynote Session featuring Dr. Bennet Omalu who gave a very passionate speech about his journey in discovering Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. It was certainly my honor to address this august group as your President and I ll cherish that memory for my entire life. Our January membership meeting, featuring Steve Anderson, was almost snowed out, but we still had a big turnout to hear a great lecture by Steve, who also spoke at the March meeting. My heartfelt thanks to Andy Ramsey, my Program Chair this year, who went above and beyond to bring you some fantastic speakers to enjoy at our membership meetings. I d also like to thank my Hospitality Chair, Melissa Durand, and her entire committee for ensuring that you all were properly greeted and assisted at the door. Please don t forget to make plans to join all of us and our families at Wild Dunes on the Isle of Palms, S.C., June 1-3. My Annual Meeting Chair, Patrick French, is the master of festivities and if you know Patrick at all, you know we re in for a fun weekend! He even has a surprise activity for those of us who can manage an early bird arrival by Thursday afternoon. Thanks to another generous subsidy from our Board of Trustees, those who worked the minimum eight hours during the March meeting can take advantage of one night free, the value of a standard room night, during their stay at the resort. Please take a moment to thank our Trustees, chaired by Dan Dunwody, for their generosity throughout the year. I d like to thank the entire Hinman Executive Staff, led by Sylvia Ratchford, for their patient guidance and help throughout my year as your president. I could not have made it without their direction and encouragement. They are, without a doubt, one of the integral factors in the great success of our Society and the Hinman Dental Meeting. We are certainly blessed to have each one of these ladies working so hard for our benefit. It has been incredibly gratifying to serve as your President this year and I m overwhelmed with the support and love from all of you and from the affectionate guidance of my predecessors and mentors in the Society. 3 General Chairman s Message The 106th Hinman Dental Meeting! Patrick H. Yancey III Hinman has come and gone and we were very successful again. I would like to express a great big thank you to everyone who volunteered their time and participated in our meeting. We could not have done this without you. Yes, everyone makes a difference. If by chance you missed the meeting for one reason or another, please come back next year, March 21 23, 2019, to see what you missed. We need you! For me, Hinman is a true blessing. I have made so many friends that I would have otherwise never met. These friends have enriched my life even though I only see some of them once a year. A friendly smile and a warm greeting make a big difference. We should know, as we have given many pretty smiles through our practices. We have all been given many blessings to use to enrich our society. Hinman is one of the ways that we can touch the lives of others. Thank you for allowing me to be your 2018 General Chair. I can assure you I tried my absolute best, not hardly a breath of energy left. I would also like to thank Brad Greenway and Max Ferguson for serving as my program chairs and for mentoring me through this experience. Believe me, they had a big undertaking in training me and I am very grateful to both of them. This meeting would not have been the success it was without these two men. I hope you were able to hear Dr. Bennett Omalu at our keynote session and enjoy our party at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. These events were a highlight for me this year. Lastly, our staff, under the direction of Sylvia Ratchford, is amazing. They crossed every t and dotted every i in their preparation and planning of our meeting. They are to be commended. This is the last letter I will address to you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. 4 Dr. Gerrit Hagman Receives The Gold Award! The Gold Life Award Membership is conferred by the Hinman Dental Society to selected members, who by at least 25 years of continuous membership in the Society and exemplary past service on behalf of the Meeting, have been determined to be deserving of this high honor. Candidates for the Gold Award are nominated by the President of the Hinman Dental Society and the General Chair of the Meeting. After approval by the Advisory Committee, the name is submitted to the Executive Council for approval. The Gold Award was awarded to Dr. Gerrit C. Hagman for recognition of 57 years in the practice of dentistry, serving his patients with excellence and contributing immeasurably to the image of the profession. The Hinman Dental Society appreciates his many outstanding and valuable contributions to the Society, The Thomas P. Hinman Dental Meeting and organized dentistry. 6 Hinman Members Share Their Experience at Hinman 2018 Although all Hinman Members enjoy their experience at the Hinman Dental Meeting each year, there is something special about the very first time someone attends as a Hinman Member. Some of our newest members have shared their experiences with us! Dr. Suvidha Sachdeva It was amazing! Dr. Jimmy Cassidy I had a great time as a new member! Dr. Cassidy has enjoyed coming to Hinman since he was a child, presenting table clinic research while in dental school and being a Hinman Speaker over the years. As a new member, he gained a whole new perspective about the inner-workings of the meeting. Dr. Cassidy worked with the Lab Co-Op on the exhibit floor, experiencing first-hand all the time and hard work that our devoted members put into each year s meeting. He shared, I realize the success of the Hinman is really due to a history of member service to the society and the profession of dentistry. Dr. Eric Anderson The meeting really is a place for reunions! Dr. Anderson has attended the meeting as a child and dental student, but he really enjoyed being a part of the team this year. He worked on two committees, transportation and Hinman s Night Out, attended a hands-on grafting course, and reconnected with old classmates. His biggest eye-opener as a new member working at the meeting was how quickly the days came and went. The meeting seemed to go by in a flash, he said.. Dr. Phil Hammond My first year participating as a Hinman member was an exceptional experience! Dr. Hammond has been to Hinman many times over the years, but was honored to be able to participate as a Hinman Member this year. He served as a clinic captain and was delighted to see so many of his MCG classmates and military colleagues. Dr. Hammond has always been impressed by the professionalism and friendliness exhibited by Hinman members to attendees, and this year was no exception for him. He shared, It was rewarding to be part of an efficient and caring team that presented a world-class conference to thousands of dental professionals. Dr. Amanda Sengel It was fun being on the working side of things and seeing behind the scenes. Dr. Sengel has attended the Hinman Meeting many times, but enjoyed her experience of attending as a first-time member. She worked on the Hinman s Night Out committee and helped create a memorable party for our attendees. She recalls, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves at the beautiful aquarium. She is pictured above with fellow committee worker and Hinman member, Dr. Janice Lee. Dr. Sachdeva has attended the meeting five times in the past, but her first year as a member and a practice owner was something special. She enjoyed the motivation, organization and fun-loving atmosphere of working on the Hinman s Night Out committee. She met many new people and had a great time. When reflecting on Hinman 2018, Dr. Sachdeva shared, I felt like I belonged to Hinman as a member and that it is my family. Dr. Samantha Johnson Hinman honestly gets you excited all over again about being a dentist. Hinman 2018 was Dr. Johnson s second time attending the meeting. She enjoyed working as a clinic captain and greeting all attendees as they entered the course room. She also met members and learned about their own Hinman experiences. As a new dentist, she soaked in as much as she could during the meeting; she attended courses all three days. Dr. Ben Martin I really enjoyed my time at Hinman! Dr. Martin has attended the meeting six times in the past, but this was his first as a member and clinic captain. He also attended many lectures and enjoyed getting to speak with Dr. Mark Murphy before his lecture. Dr. Martin has always enjoyed Hinman, but this year he began to appreciate the time and effort that goes into putting on such a standardsetting meeting. 6

7 Continued from Cover Cutting-Edge Scaling Techniques, attracting 879 attendees; and Dr. Richard Young s Tooth Preserving Dentistry, a 33-Year Perspective, filling the room with 864 attendees. In addition, Prevention Convention drew 661 attendees to the all-day program on Thursday. Dental student attendance was significant with a total of 768 students from schools across the country. In addition, 190 pre-dental students, 445 hygiene students and 732 assisting students attended Hinman this year to take advantage of various programs. Many took part in the G.O.L.D. Program, Dental Student Happy Hour and Scholars Luncheon. At the Scholars Luncheon held during the meeting, Hinman awarded 90 scholarships at 47 premiere dental programs throughout the Southeast. Over the past 17 years, the Hinman Dental Society has contributed nearly $9 million, with $500,000 this year alone, in scholarships and large gifts in support of dental education. HINMAN DENTAL SOCIETY PROPOSED SLATE # # # #MyHinman was a Success! Thank you to everyone who helped promote Hinman with the #myhinman hashtag! There were more than 2,000 posts on social media using the hashtag this year. Together with Hinman Housing Powered by Eventsphere, we are again able to give away an additional $3,000 in scholarships because of the campaign. Attendees were encouraged to vote for their school to receive one of the scholarships. Mr. Anderson announced that he is donating one book per dental office, and he also returned his honorarium check to the Society to be given as a scholarship. Dr. Robinson announced the completion code for the lecture, then invited all Hinman members to meet in the pre-function area for the business meeting following Dr. Yancey s update on Hinman HINMAN 2018: General Chair Pat Yancey thanked Mr. Anderson for his lecture and is looking forward to seeing him lecture during the Hinman Dental Meeting in March. Dr. Yancey reminded the staff members in the room about the tracks for Hinman 2018 and encouraged everyone to attend. He also highlighted Megan HINMAN 2018: General Chair Pat Yancey thanked his program chairs, Drs. Brad Greenway and Max Ferguson, for planning a strong 2018 meeting. He shared the following meeting highlights: more emphasis on the Keynote speaker during the Keynote Session, Hinman s Night Out s Masquerade party at the Georgia Aquarium, a full lab program with demonstrations on the exhibit floor, the Total Health Pavilion, exhibit-only hours on Thursday, and basketball related activities on the floor to attract interest. Dr. Yancey also thanked the Hinman staff and praised the increased marketing efforts this year. HINMAN 2019: Chair-Elect Jonathan Dubin is supporting Dr. Yancey and the 2018 Hinman Dental Meeting. He looks forward to learning and growing from the 2018 meeting. HINMAN 2020: Vice Chair-elect Bob O Donnell is supporting Dr. Yancey and is eager to meet the 2018 speakers in March. The 2020 program team has scouted the ADA meeting in Atlanta, and they look forward to scouting at Yankee and Chicago Midwinter dental meetings. ADVISORY: No report. TRUSTEES: Chair Dan Dunwody shared his plans to visit ASDA in January and MUSC in February. He would like to increase the number of Trustees that visit each school in order to build stronger relationships. He also plans to reach out to new organizations to continue building our relationship with students and faculty. These efforts will help support Hinman 2018, as well as future years. Brinsfield s financial program on Saturday. Dr. Yancey encouraged everyone to purchase their Hinman s Night Out ticket soon, as the event is expected to sell out. Dr. Yancey also gave highlights on the keynote speaker, Dr. Bennett Omalu, and the special events speakers, Rolin Desir and James Farmer. Dr. Robinson welcomed everyone to the meeting, announced an attendance of approximately 470 attendees and thanked the hospitality chair, Dr. Melissa Durand. Dr. Robinson thanked the trustees for their continued generosity through Society subsidies. MINUTES: Secretary William Rousseau presented the minutes from the November Executive Council and November Membership Meeting as printed in the January Hinman Preview Review. The minutes were approved (Rousseau/Ramsey). FINANCIAL REPORT: Treasurer David Anderson presented the following Society YTD financial report as presented at the January Executive Council meeting: OLD BUSINESS: None. NEW BUSINESS: Roy McDonald made a motion to enter executive session. The motion was approved (McDonald/Anderson). MEMBERSHIP REPORT: There was a motion to come out of executive session (Newsom/Anderson). Dr. Newsom asked for a motion to approve the following members as a slate: Drs. Eric Anderson, Joshua Buckner, Richard Callan, Samantha Johnson, Richard Kim, Drew King, Arjun Patel, Suvidha Sachdeva, Phillip Strickland and Stacey Wingad. The motion was approved (Newsom/Dunwody). Applications for other nominees were declined or tabled. MEMBERSHIP NEWS: Chair Darryal McCullough gave the membership news report. The council voted to issue a private reprimand to a member of the Society (O Donnell/McDonald). Dr. Hanes thanked the Society for supporting the future of dentistry. Dr. Dunwody expressed his gratitude for being trusted as a Hinman Trustee and also thanked the Hinman membership, stating that without the members, the giving opportunities would not the possible. He also shared that the Trustees have provided more than eight million dollars in scholarships and large gifts over the past 17 years. ANNUAL MEETING REPORT: Chairman Patrick French stated the Annual Meeting would take place June 1-3, 2018 at the Wild Dunes Resort, Isle of Palms, SC. There are a variety of sharks to catch including: Bonnet Head, Atlantic Sharp Nose, Black Tip, Spinner and Sandbar. Other catches include redfish, trout, flounder, rays, ladyfish and more. Catch and release only. Fresh bait, license and all tackle provided. *Feel free to bring a bag and/or small cooler. Beer and wine are permitted for passengers 21 and over. Cost: $90 Event 7 Capers Island Wildlife Exploration 9 a.m. 12:30 p.m. 8:30 a.m. to carpool to the marina. 7A Adult 7B Child (ages 3 12) 7C Toddler (2 and under) Enjoy a 3.5 hour boat excursion that ventures to Capers Island, one of the few remaining undeveloped barrier islands. You will cruise through winding tidal creeks to find diverse wildlife living in this salt marsh environment. Common sightings include bottlenose dolphin, osprey, pelicans, bald eagles, herons, egrets, sharks and more. Along the way you will pull up nets and habitat traps for an upclose look at some of the rarely seen marine creatures that thrive below the surface, such as oysters and blue crabs. As you arrive on Capers Island, you will have about an hour and a half to explore its pristine Boneyard Beach and interior freshwater ponds. Capers provides excellent opportunities for shelling and bird watching. It is a great activity for the entire family. Morgan Creek has been described as an unexpected oasis in the heart of the Isle of Palms. You ll search for megafauna like bottlenose dolphins and loggerhead sea turtles as egrets and herons fly overhead. Your guide will share their knowledge about Charleston history and the surrounding ecosystem, while making sure that the experience is unforgettable. *Shoes are required for kayaking. Step back in time as you stroll the old walled city, meander down the cobblestone streets and enjoy the beauty of restored Charleston. You ll follow in the famous footsteps as you experience three hundred years of history, traditions and stories. Commentary includes Charleston s important role in the Revolutionary War and Civil War, both of which were fought in and around the city. Amid the eighteenth and nineteenth century buildings, your guide will point out historic sites, architectural treasurers, hidden gardens and the Four Corners of Law.
