These states include Brunei, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. We also consider independent East Timor. General themes we consider along the way are: different meanings of "modernization" and "democracy" the urban-rural gap, and the rich-poor gap special role of the military in some SE Asian states ethnic and religious separatist movements the evolution of ASEAN, with notes on APEC, AFTA, ARF, ASEAN + 3 mainland political rivalries and the Indo-China Concept disputes in the South China Sea Successful students in ASIA 1230 will: - become more familiar with the region, its nation-states, problems and potential. They will no longer view SE Asia as second-class states. Some students may take more ASIA courses, or even decide to visit the region. - see which problems are common to all developing countries, and which are particular to individual states. - become more familiar with ASEAN, the Association of SE Asian Nations, its successes, failures, and potential, especially in relation to East Asia and India. - become more aware of the different conditions and cultural attitudes that prevail in the region, and especially be able to view current events in the region from more of a SE Asian perspective. In historical terms, the course covers the period from WWII to current times. The native point of view is emphasized throughout, as are historical, ethnic, and cultural factors in current military, economic, and political policies. Credits: 3 credits (3:1:0) for one term Prerequisites: none (ASIA 1100 and 1101 recommended, ASIA 1130 strongly recommended)

Make sure your essay is focused on SE Asia. That doesn t mean you can t write about anywhere else, you just need to keep your focus on SE Asia. For example, if you are writing about the American war in Vietnam, write more about the Vietnamese than about the Americans. 2. Make sure your essay is contemporary (at least since 1945). This doesn t mean that you can t write about periods earlier than World War II (colonial period, for example), but you must focus on a contemporary issue.
5 5 Asian Studies 1230 Outline Page 5 3. Look at the handout on essay topics. Choose a country or event or people that you would like to know something more about. That is the best way to choose a topic. If the topic you want to write on doesn t appear on the list, you must clear it with the instructor. 4. As a general principle, your essay should be as specific as possible. Broad topics are often meaningless. The purpose of an essay is for you to dig more deeply into a topic than we can do in class. For example, rather than writing about a whole war, write about the role of one Prime Minister or famous general in that war. Therefore, you must focus your topic area down to a title question. THE TITLE, OUTLINE AND BIBLIOGRAPHY ASSIGNMENT 1. Include the title question. 2. The outline will be a series of about four or five sub-titles, the first being "Introduction", the last being "Conclusion". If your subtitles are not obvious, give a little explanation of each one. 3. For bibliography, include works you have seen, or have in hand. 4. The bibliography will be in one of the standard formats, or at least will include all the necessary information for each item. If in doubt, check the library materials on the main standard styles. 5. Type in "hanging indent" style. 6. Leave a blank line between items. 7. Try for a variety of kinds of sources: books, journal articles, websites, videos. etc. 8. Watch the dates of the items. Articles from online journal ves may be from the 1950s and even the 1890s! They might be useful for historical purposes, but ask yourself whether these are really useful to your topic. 9. Websites should be cited similarly to print materials. See the library handout on this. 10. You must use at least one academic journal. FORMAT: 1. Hardcopies typed on standard paper, double spaced (or 1½). 2. Your final title must be in the form of a question. One single question. 3. The final essay must have subtitles. 4. The pages must be numbered (don t count the title sheet, don t write the number on page one (start with page two). 5. The essay must have a Grade Sheet attached at the end. UNACCEPTABLE: 1. A bibliography that is all websites 2. Topic does not focus on contemporary Southeast Asia, as defined above 3. No references 4. No bibliography An unacceptable essay will be returned and the penalty will continue while you fix it.
