1 The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros Personal Vignette Project Description: you will write four personal and original vignettes. Each vignette will be accompanied with an overview. You will create a book for your vignettes, which must include a front and back cover. You will decorate the book with family photos, symbols, pictures, and/or significant drawings. Each student s book should be unique and reflect their personality and life s experience. Book includes: 1. Front cover with images and your name 2. Table of contents: titles of each vignette, overview titles, and corresponding page numbers 3. A minimum of 4 vignettes a. Each vignette page must be decorated with images that fit the mood 4. A minimum of 4 overview pages 5. Back cover with images Each vignette must meet the following requirements: TYPED words Must have a theme Must have a title Contain at least four elements of style Contain dialogue with proper quotation marks Must contain an overview breakdown of the style elements you used (see example) Must be focused on one of the topics You may choose to focus your vignettes on any of the following topics: 1. Family is valuable (ex. Hairs, Papa Who Wakes Up Tired in the Dark, and Laughter ) 2. Insecurities (ex. My Name, A Rice Sandwich, Beautiful & Cruel, and A Smart Cookie ) 3. Friendship (ex. Our Good Day and And Some More ) 4. An admirer (ex. Chanclas and Sire ) 5. Frightening experience (ex. Meme Ortiz, Those Who Don t, and The Monkey Garden ) 6. Superstition (ex. Elenita, Cards, Palm, Water and The Three Sisters ) 7. Nature metaphor (ex. Darius & the Clouds and Four Skinny Trees ) 8. Being naïve (ex. The First Job, Edna s Ruthie, and The Earl of Tennessee ) 9. Goals (ex. The House on Mango Street, Marin, Alicia Who Sees Mice, and Bums in the Attic ) 10. The House on Mango Street themes: a. Growing up (ex. Chanclas, Hips, The First Job, and Linoleum Roses ) b. Some women or men feel trapped by traditional female or male roles (ex. Boys & Girls, Alicia Who Sees Mice, Rafaela Who Drinks Coconut & Papaya Juice on Tuesdays, Sally, and Minerva Writes Poems ) c. Prejudice is founded in fear and ignorance (ex. Cathy Queen of Cats and Those Who Don t ) d. It is important to be proud of one s home ( Alicia & I Talking on Edna s Steps, The Three Sisters, A House of My Own, and Mango Says Goodbye Sometime ) e. It is difficult to establish one s identity when caught between two conflicting cultures (ex. No Speak English and Geraldo No Last Name ) f. One has a duty to his or her neighbors and community (ex. What Sally Said and The Monkey Garden )
2 Overview: On the facing page of each vignette, create a style breakdown: o Name the topic of your vignette o Explain why you chose this specific topic (3-5 sentences) o List the theme of your vignette and explain (3-5 sentences) why this theme is important to you o List all four elements of style you used (you can use more than four) AND write their definition Elements of style: metaphor, simile, diction, cliché, irony, personification, hyperbole, onomatopoeia, repetition, alliteration, imagery, analogy, and symbolism List the example of each specific style element from your vignette Grading: this project is worth a total of 250 points, which will go in your essay/written projects/presentations category. Each category will be graded on its specific scale.
