4 Tangerine Book Talk Teacher Model Hook: Attention Grabber Have you wondered why your sibling was so mean to you? Have you ever wondered why your parents love your sibling more? Have you wondered why everything bad always happens to you? These are all thoughts that Paul Fisher in Tangerine has wondered. General Information: Title, Author, Genre Tangerine is a realistic fiction book written by Edward Bloor. Book Content: (characters, setting, conflict) Setting : The story takes place at Paul Fisher s new home in Tangerine County, Florida. Paul discovers that the weather in Florida is not just hot and sunny. It is full of lightning, muck fires, and unstable ground conditions. Characters : Paul Fisher is a middle-school aged boy who wears thick glasses and plays the goalie position in soccer. His brother Erik is an all-star high school football player who is not as nice as he appears. Paul must learn to deal with an overbearing mother and a father who only focuses on his brother s football dream. Throughout the book, Paul meets other football and soccer players such as Erik, Antoine, Joey, and Tino who influence Paul in both negative and positive ways. Conflict : Paul wants to be the goalie on his middle school soccer team, but obstacles such as his vision, brother, parents, and weather get in the way. Paul must learn how to confront his family and vision in order to achieve his dreams of playing soccer and finally knowing the truth behind his family secrets.
5 What I liked about the book I like the cliffhanger ending because it keeps you guessing what happens to Paul and his future. I want to know what happens next to him and his family. Along the way, the story made me laugh, cry, and shout in anger. I rooted for Paul throughout the story because he was an underdog and I wanted him to finally be happy. Favorite Quote On page 209, when Mrs. Fisher brings up her meeting with Erik s guidance counselor, Paul questions what bad thing his brother did and Mom is shocked and wonders why he said that. Paul then thinks,... Because Erik is a psycho, Mom. Do you really not know that? But I didn t say that. Mom and Dad don t like it when I say things like that. This quote is my favorite from Tangerine because it shows Paul s sense of humor about his evil brother. He knows how bad his brother is and it s so funny that his parents are clueless about it. This is one of those times where people just laugh something off because there is nothing else they can do. However, I just wished at this scene that Paul would have actually just said this out loud to his mom, but he wasn t brave enough yet! Big Idea and Real-world connection Big Idea: Truth Paul s family hid secrets his entire life and it took some courage for Paul to finally get what he wanted and feel free. Real-world connection : It seems that no matter what state you live in, there are always problems that every family must face and family secrets that are supposed to stay hidden. Parents will always do what they think is best for their children even if it may not be the right decision. Sibling rivalry will always exist until family realizes their true role is to push each other to be the best and support each other throughout anything. Recommendations and Disclaimers If you like realistic fiction, mystery, and sports books, then you will love Tangerine. If you like relating to your characters, then this book will keep every middle school student who enjoys sports, enjoying the mystery of discovering the truth behind a family secret. Disclaimer: Not all characters will survive or receive what they deserve. Be warned that this story will have weather you never heard of and make you want to hurt some characters and hug some others.
