1 AP Literature and Composition Summer Assignment Each student taking AP Literature and Composition must read the following three books and complete the corresponding three written assignments prior to the first day of class. 1. How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster (read first) 2. Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison 3. My Name is Asher Lev by Chaim Potok Make margin notes as you read. Postit notes also work well. What to note: key passages; key points; questions that come to mind; your reactions; connections (to other works, films, history, current events, etc).; character traits; character development; turning points; conflicts; unfamiliar vocabulary. Important note: These books have been chosen based on their literary merit and suitability for building skill in literary analysis. They frequently appear in AP Literature curriculums. Should any literature selections these or others in the course be deemed inappropriate for any reason by a parent or guardian, an alternative title will be provided. Written Assignments All written work is due on the first day of class and will be collected on that day. Remember to bring it with you. Written work = HTRLLAP (How to Read Literature Like a Professor) Graphic Organizer + 2 Sets of Data Sheets (one for each fiction book) Print out this file and complete in full per directions. Do the assignments your own handwriting. Read through the assignments to familiarize yourself with what is required. You may want to work on it as you work your way through the book, rather than doing it all after completing it. Do what works best for you. During the first days of class, you will be tested on the contents of How to Read Literature Like a Professor. Y ou will also write an inclass essay on Invisible Man or My Name is Asher Lev. You will not know in advance the novel about which you will have to write. Be aware that the summer work and assessments represent significant grades in this course.
2 AP Lit Summer Reading Assignment Name How to Read Literature Like A Professor 1 This is the graphic organizer described in point 1 of the Summer Reading Written Assignment description. Choose six chapters from How to Read Literature Like a Professor (HTRLLAP) that you found particularly meaningful or interesting. Bullet point 710 key points from each of those six chapters. Then use these points as a reference as you read the two novels Invisible Man and My Name is Asher Lev. Your goal is to find one example from either novel for each of the six chapters in HTRLLAP that you selected. (One total, not one example from each novel.) Write a full paragraph explaining in detail the correlations you make between HTRLLAP and the novel. If you cannot find an example for a particular chapter, pick a different chapter and try again. Print this out. Complete the assignment with pen or pencil in your own handwriting. HTRLLAP Chapter #, Title, Pages Key Points from Chapter (710 bullet points) Example from Invisible Man or Asher Lev (Include Page Reference and circle book title) Example with page # + full paragraph explanation connecting HTRLLAP to this quote/example HTRLLAP Chapter #, Title, Pages Key Points from Chapter (710 bullet points) Example from Invisible Man or Asher Lev (Include Page Reference and circle book title) Example with page # + full paragraph explanation connecting HTRLLAP to this quote/example
