1 THE BOOKPLATE Autumn 2012 It s Autumn the perfect time to Fall into a good book! And speaking of, this issue of the Friends of the Cambria County Library newsletter has just what you need to jumpstart the new season! Please enjoy coupons for a free book (up to a $4.00 value) from the Inclined to Read Bookstore. The Bookstore may also have just what you need to jumpstart your holiday shopping list. Books are wonderful gifts, and on page 2, you can find information about our annual Christmas sale. If you can t wait until then, check out the featured genres for October and November on page 3. Looking for Volunteering opportunities? Please consider spending some time at the bookstore. Sandie Hinterliter, our bookstore manager, is looking for someone (or two) to help sort books into categories. It probably is not necessary each week but more as an asneeded basis. There are monthly opportunities to help clear out the month s special and the next day set up for the following month s special. It is an hour or so each day. Sandie will send an announcing the date and times. If you don t have and are interested, please contact Sandie and she will give you details. There will be group Training Days for new volunteers on the second Tuesday of each month. If you are unable to attend, Sandie would be glad to train you individually. FACILITATOR NEEDED The Friends of the Cambria County Library Position The position of facilitator is currently open. The FOL needs a member to preside at all meetings, appoint committee chairpersons, serve as ex-officio member of all committees, and attend meetings of the Board of Directors of the Cambria County Library Association. 1

2 Library News Have you been keeping up with all the happenings at the Cambria County Library? If you have access to a computer, you can simply go to the library homepage at: to what all is going on. Also, click on Facebook and keep up with announcements of upcoming programs. Patrons can help the library in conjunction with Books-A-Million store in the Galleria Mall. The store has offered to give a percentage of the day s sales to participating libraries. It s as simple as going to the Galleria and purchasing books on specific dates. If you d like to help the library, the following dates are for the Cambria County Library: October 27, November 21, and December 26. Big Christmas Sale The Friends of the Library Christmas Sale will be held on Monday, Dec. 3 from 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM. Everything the book store has to offer will be included in this special sale. Featured books include Christmas hardbacks and paperbacks, along with children's Christmas books, coffee table books, and special out-of-print books. There will be something for everyone at low prices!! Baked goods will also be available for sale including cookies, muffins, and cupcakes from a new bakery source. Stop in and see the variety we will have to offer! We will also be decorating a Christmas tree- with your help. Small book cutouts will be available for a donation of at least $1. Donors can write their name on the book and hang it on the tree. We need a few hours of our FOL members time in some capacity. We will need volunteers to display items, work in the bookstore, help people make selections, sell baked goods, sign up new members, and assist the donors with their Christmas tree book-ornaments. Monday is usually our busiest day at the book store and we are hoping for a big crowd at our Christmas sale. If you can give just two hours sometime between 9:00-6:00 on that day, it would be a huge help. 3 Generous Donation Received The FOL recently received an anonymous donation of $500, with the request that the money be put towards some sort of fundraiser. We have decided to do a fundraiser during the month of December to try to raise enough funds to match this anonymous donation. We will have a Christmas tree (undecorated) in the lobby outside the bookstore and will have small book cutouts available in the bookstore. For a donation of at least $1, donors will be able to put their name on a book cutout and hang it on the tree. Please consider helping with this fundraiser and help us make our FOL Christmas tree really beautiful!! In addition to this fundraiser, we are doing a membership/ volunteer drive from now through the end of Since you are already a member, please consider volunteering with the FOL in some capacity (there is information about simple training on page 1 and opportunities to help with upcoming events also listed throughout the newsletter). Also please ask your friends, relatives, work associates, or neighbors who love books and reading to consider joining FOL. Check out page 5 for the form. Perhaps the company you work for would support the FOL on a corporate level? Stop into the Book store to check out these monthly features and many, many more! October: Murder/Halloween. Finances Since the last newsletter, The Friends of the Library has supported the library through purchase of over $9,800 worth of equipment including rolling baskets for patrons, security cameras, Children's theater media equipment, motion-sensor faucets for the children's girls' room, 2 tablets with accessories to provide roaming reference service, 10 mounting arm kits for computers in the training lab, security software for each of the 11 new lab computers, and three barcode scanners, and the new vinyl flooring in the Literacy room. In addition to these purchases for the library, the Friends also supported two children in the Needy Children Shopping Tour through 1st Summit Bank. Our mission continues to be to support the Cambria County Library and also to be a positive and supportive part of the Johnstown community. 3

4 Volunteer Opportunities We need many more of our members to step up and become active volunteers for the Friends of the Library!! Volunteers in the book store can do as many or as few shifts as they want. A shift is 3 hours per month, and you can pick your own days. We keep it simple: hardbacks are $1 unless marked differently, paperbacks are $.25, and prices for CDs, videos, and DVDs, etc. are marked by the checkout desk. We collect the money from the customers and bag their purchases for them. You will enjoy getting to know other volunteers and chatting with our customers! If you don't feel comfortable handling the money and making change or if you would prefer not to work alone, you can sign up to work with another volunteer for your shift. We also need sorters for all the items that are donated to us. This is done two hours on Wed. morning (or anytime that you can help!). This is easy to learn and there are always others to work with you. We can also use people to help with occasional bake sales and special events like Little Night Music in April. If you are interested in helping in any way, contact Shirley at or stop by the book store just off the library lobby and look at the calendar in the store. Our volunteer schedule is posted there. We are currently open 6 days a week, and are hoping to soon be open expanded hours. If everyone does a little, we can keep expanding and help the library in many ways. 5 Membership Information and Renewal The Friends of the Cambria Co. Library currently has almost 370 members. What a tremendous accomplishment that has been for us in two years! We are changing the way we will be doing membership renewals, in part to make bookkeeping easier for the membership chairperson! Memberships will now be renewed yearly at the beginning of each calendar year. If you look at the mailing label on your newsletter, you will see a date on the top line. This date indicates the year through which your membership is paid. If your label says 2012, your membership renewal for the year 2013 is now due. If your label indicates any date later than 2012, you do NOT need to renew now. Please note that if your label says Renew 11 or Renew 10, your membership is overdue. If you are listed as Renew 10 and do not renew your membership by Jan. 2013, you will be dropped from our membership lists and this will be your last newsletter.
