1 North Shore High School Grade 10 Honors Level for the School Year Summer Bridge Reading Summer Bridge Reading Assignment English 10H Summer provides a wonderful opportunity to bridge the knowledge and skills that you learned in 9th grade with the language arts content that you will encounter in 10 th grade. And you can do it from the comfort of your own backyard! The North Shore High School English 10H teachers eagerly present your Summer Bridge Reading Assignment below. The summer assignment is mandatory and will be graded as part of a formal first quarter assessment at the end of September (rubric attached). While most students prefer purchasing their books, copies will be available at the NSHS, and both the Sea Cliff and the Gold Coast Public Libraries. You can even download ebook versions. So, pour yourself a cool glass of lemonade, and find a shady tree. It s time for your Summer Bridge Reading Assignment! The 10H summer reading assignment is the novel Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen. Read the novel and complete the graphic organizer task on the back. You will be given an additional assignment shortly after school begins, and you will be permitted to use this graphic organizer work for assistance. Preview: In a remote Hertfordshire village, far off the good coach roads of George III's England, a country squire of no great means must marry off his five vivacious daughters. At the heart of this all-consuming enterprise are his headstrong second daughter Elizabeth Bennet and her aristocratic suitor Fitzwilliam Darcy two lovers whose pride must be humbled and prejudices dissolved before the novel can come to its splendid conclusion. (Amazon.com) Your task is given on the back.
2 Your Task: Select three themes that you want to follow throughout the novel and, for each of the themes, find five textual examples. (You should, therefore, have a total of 15 responses.) There is a list of topics provided below. For each passage you select, explain how it relates to your chosen theme. To go from topic to theme, answer the question: what is the author saying about the topic? (In other words, what is Austen saying about love?) List of Topics love marriage wealth society and class women and femininity family deceit language and communication principles pride prejudice an example (from Romeo & Juliet) Topic: extreme passion Theme: People should not allow themselves to be carried away by extreme emotions. page number example from the text analysis: How does your example connect to the theme? Act II. scene vi Friar Lawrence: These violent delights have violent ends / And in their triumph die, like fire and powder / Which, as they kiss, consume. Friar Lawrence is warning Romeo against getting swept away by the intensity of his emotions for Juliet. Through a simile, he cautions Romeo that these extreme emotions can be destructive. Friar Lawrence exposes the paradox when he identifies the delights of love yet cautions Romeo against the inherent violent ends of such pleasures.
