Luchs Collection Date: 1920s-1982 Abstract: Quantity: Sermons, correspondence, photographs, scrapbooks, and newspaper and magazine articles 6 cu. ft. BIOGRAPHY OF Fred E. Luchs was born in Ridgeway, Pennsylvania in He graduated from Franklin and Marshall College. He went on to do his graduate work at the McCormick Seminary. In 1931, he graduated from Reformed Seminary in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Luchs was the minister of the First Presbyterian Church in Los Alamos, New Mexico for 14 years. He then went on to hold pastorates in Los Alamos, New Mexico; Evanston, Illinois; Ann Arbor, Michigan; and Rochester, New York before he returned to Athens. He was named 1 of 100 Great Preachers of America by Christian Century, and in 1973 was named 1 in 100 best speakers in America by the International Speakers Network. In 1933, he married Evelyn Coutler. Evelyn got her Bachelors degree at Ohio University, and her Masters degree at Columbia University. She went on to become a lecturer, author, and teacher. In 1943, Fred and Evelyn adopted four children, ages 4-8. In 1948, Evelyn was named First Lady of the Year by the Athens chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, and in 1950, she was appointed the First Woman Trustee at Ohio University. Fred and Evelyn retired in Athens, Ohio where Fred died on May 20, 1993 at age 89, and Evelyn died March 16, 1994 at age 90. SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION The collection consists of an abundance of information pertaining to Fred Luchs and his long life as a preacher, speaker, husband, father, and friend. There are a large variety of materials ranging from photographs and memory books to newspaper articles

2 and letters. This collection begins with sermon written by Luchs, arranged by date (box 1) and alphabetical order by title (boxes 2 and 3). Also contained in box 3 are Luchs prayers. Next, there are publications by Fred ad Evelyn arranged by date, along with brochures and advertising materials (box 4). There are a large quantity of letters arranged alphabetically (box 5), and personal letters, cards, etc written by Fred and Evelyn, and their family and friends (box 6). Many newspaper and magazine articles were published about Luchs and his family (box 7), which are arranged in chronological order. In addition to these things, this collection contains a variety of scrapbooks, photo albums (box 9), mounting books (box 11), and photos (box 8). Some of the scrapbooks consist of A Tribute to Dr. Luchs (box 9), celebration of Luchs 25 th (box 10), and 50 th (box 12) Anniversary in Ministry, Luchs pastorate in Athens (box 13) and England (box 11), and a diary of weddings Luchs performed.
