2 We digitized a number of local photos at the library. This building was built in 1880 as Clarinda National Bank. Friends of the Library get ready to hold one of their book sales. Director Hoppmann explores Minecraft with children during a STEM day at the library. We had close to 200 people attend the opening of the Outdoor Space at the Library. Two Trivia Nights were held with 100+ people at each event. A class visits the library. Not only do classes visit the library, Youth Librarian Marissa visits area schools and daycares each month.

3 Children working outside made LED bugs. As part of the Teen Summer Library program, teens explored Clarinda history with NVHSM staff. The Time Burners were one of many outdoor concerts held at the library. Children work on their creations at LEGO Club. Story Hour is held every Tuesday and Wednesday during the school year. Library partnered with the Optimist Club and Lied Center for the Ghost Walk and a special program.

4 Choosing to be a librarian, to me, goes with wanting to provide information to people. I have an undergraduate degree in political science, which goes back to the old adage, knowledge is power. I like to be a part of the learning process, whether that includes helping someone learn or learning new things myself along the way. As a librarian I value being the provider of information because that is something that I look for as a patron: access to information. I use Zinio emagazines the most because I can get new magazines every month and I don t have to subscribe to them or have a dozen different magazines laying on my coffee table. I think physical books will be around for a good number of years. ebook usage has kind of leveled off and focus has seemed to shift to paper books again. But technology will continue to be a big part of libraries because how we access information has changed so much. Librarians no longer wait to answer questions. We are information navigators, helping to educate and guide. Andrew Hoppmann, Director I d say I ve been using the library for the past 50 years. When I was a young mother I didn t have the time with raising the family on the farm so I didn t use the library much. But once the kids were grown I did start to read more. I d always stop at the library when I d come to town for my groceries. I d also get westerns for my husband, Kenny. I really enjoy all of the books, especially mysteries. Reading really helps pass the time as I have limited mobility. It s good entertainment for me. Sue Grafton, Fern Michaels and Agatha Christie are some of my favorite authors. The library benefits the community because it has so much wonderful information and the activities for children are excellent. This past summer I came in with my great-great grandchild and was amazed at all of the activities to entertain the children while they were here. Barbara Bloom Library Staff Andrew Hoppmann Director Marissa Gruber Youth Services Joni Hickman Circulation Librarian Karol Dudley Jayne Davidson Brittany McClarnon Emily Wagoner Lauren Tunnicliff Page Jennifer Sics Page Aya Hamanaka Page Library Board of Trustees Ruth Falk, President Phil Tornholm, Vice President Allie Wellhausen, Secretary Tasha Cole Pam Herzberg Paul Jones Evelyn Rank Beth Rarick Robert Briggs Ever since we moved here in 1975 I have been using the library. I took my boys to the old Carnegie library for story time. Although, I admit I did not have much time myself to read I had a new job, new home and we were trying to launch a business BUT the library was a good first contact. Because I didn t know anyone in my age group and my boys did not know anyone, story hour helped me, and them, connect to others in Clarinda. I have lots of reasons to come to the library. I check out books and movies, but I have started to use the library s ebooks more because it s easier on my eyes I can adjust the text easily on an ebook I can also checkout a book without leaving the house. Besides the technology help and checking out materials, I also come into the library because there are a lot of social interactions: from coloring, dominos, book club and the Friends of the Library Group. The Friends group has no dues and very few meetings. You feel that when we hold the book sales we are really helping the library. I have to say that another use for me is spending time with my granddaughter, like when there s a no school day or I pick her up from school. We ll often come to the library to find books and movies that we can read and watch together and it binds generations together. - Janet Price
