5 IntroduCtIon Most of the books in the present catalogue are from the library of a distinguished British collector. Assembled over the past forty years, they were selected with great care and an eye for original condition where possible. To this end copies were sought far and wide including from some of the great collections that went to auction in the U.K. and the U.S.A. during this period. The result has been a collection with distinguished provenances and many copies in original boards or parts. We are proud to offer the present selection and believe that it presents a wonderful opportunity to buy outstanding examples of some of the finest illustrated books of the past 200 years. Around 1821, under the pseudonym of Nimrod, Apperley began to contribute a series of articles to The Sporting Magazine that covered horse races, hunt meets and other sporting events. His references to the personalities of the people he knew or met at such events helped to double the circulation of the magazine within a few years. Mr. Pittman, the proprietor of The Sporting Magazine, gave Nimrod a handsome salary and defrayed all the expenses of his tours. He also gave Nimrod a stud of hunters. After Pittman s death, the proprietors of the magazine sued Apperley for the money that had been advanced. 17 14. CroWQuIll, AlFred. Absurdities: In Prose and Verse. For Thomas Hurst and Co., London, a remarkably well-preserved example. Alfred Crowquill was the pseudonym of the Forrester brothers, Charles Robert ( ) and Alfred Henry ( ), who between them wrote and illustrated a wide variety of satirical articles, comedy picture books, albums and books for children. 18 InsCrIbed by CruIKshAnK 15. CruIKshAnK, george. The bachelor s own book, being the progress of Mr. Lambkin, (Gent.) in the persuit of pleasure and amusememt, and also, in search of health and happiness. D. Bogue, London, the two earliest issues of this humourous work, the rare hand-coloured issues, the first inscribed By cruikshank. This work has been beautifully preserved and the illustrations remain remarkably clear and brightly coloured. They follow the adventures of one Mr. Lambkin, a gentleman who enters the world upon the very best possible terms with himself and sets about going a-courting. An inscription appears on the preliminary blank of the first issue and reads, To John Auldjo Esq. with best regards of George Cruikshank. It is signed with the artist s characteristic flourish. Auldjo and Cruikshank collaborated on an 1835 publication concerning a visit to Constantinople. The first issue features a misspelling of pursuit in the title; this mistake is corrected in the second issue. Provenance: John Auldjo ( ), geologist and alpinist, author of Narrative of an ascent to the summit of Mont Blanc (1828), considered a classic of alpine literature. First edition. Landscape 8vo. 19 16. CruIKshAnK, george. The Bottle [and] The Drunkard s Children. A Sequel to The Bottle. Published for the artist, by David Bogue, London, [ ]. a collection of cautionary cartoons described By dickens as very powerful. Published in the same year that Cruikshank himself swore a vow of sobriety, and inspired by The Rake s Progress, The Bottle and The Drunkard s Children chart the downward spiral of a Victorian drinker from his very first glass all the way through to his own ruin and that of his children. The two volumes caused a sensation on publication, and pirate copies, merchandise and theatrical adaptations appeared within days; at one point, versions of the work could be seen on 8 London stages at once. The Bottle and The Drunkard s Children are examples of work produced as part of the Temperance movement, which arose as a reaction against the high levels of drinking among the urban working class. Cruikshank had firsthand experience of addiction to alcohol: his father and brother were alcoholics. The present work clearly expresses the artist s conviction that alcohol leads to poverty and crime, and that total abstinence is the only way to avoid these dreadful evils. First edition. 2 volumes in 1. Folio. First part with 2 suites of the 8 plates (one suite tinted lithographs on superior paper the other the standard suite); second part standard edition with 8 plates; some minor finger-marking. Related ephemera loosely inserted. Original printed boards; darkened, edge-wear, rebacked in later straight-grain morocco. Cohn 194 & ,800 [ref: 95901] Shapero Rare Books 19

27 22. CruIKshAnK, george. London Characters. Joseph Robins, London, 1827 [ but 1906]. charming suite of engravings, in fine condition, with mysterious origins. According to Cohn, this issue was put together in about 1906 from loose plates in the Trueman collection (with, in some instances, facsimile plates struck from the original copper plates). It is a charming suite of engravings and includes many memorable images of London traders and fashionable characters such as the Tax Gatherer, Sailor s Lass, Fishmonger and Barber. The true first issue is rare; this later version is, at the very, least uncommon. Provenance: Armorial bookplate of Sir Charles Philip Huntington, 3rd Baronet ( ), second son of the 1st Baronet Huntington of the Clock House, Chelsea. 8vo. 28 In original parts 23. CruIKshAnK, george. My Sketch Book. Published for the artist by Charles Tilt, London, first edition of the first issue of cruikshank s personal sketchbook, rare in original parts. Somewhere between a sketchbook and a journal, the present work contains Cruikshank s miscellaneous musings and doodles, featuring one-off illustrated puns of the kind now seen in publications like The New Yorker, cartoon-y depictions of specific occasions and in particular, practice sketches in which Cruikshank perfects his instantly recognisable technique for drawing humans. 9 parts. Landscape folio. 37 etched plates (4 per part plus an engraved title in vol. VI), all hand-coloured, each with tissue guard; some darkening and minor soiling. Original pictorial wrappers, housed in full red morocco solander with paper inner chemise; fraying to some corners and spines. Cohn ,800 [ref: 95902] 28 Shapero Rare Books

29 original WrAppers 24. CruIKshAnK, george. Our Own Times. Bradbury & Evans, London, rare in original wrappers. This monthly serial was first published on 1 April 1846 but ceased production after just 4 issues; there is some speculation that Cruikshank fell out with Bradbury & Evans after taking his work to the Fleet Street publisher David Bogue. The present edition features pieces by writers and humourists including Angus B Reach and Gilbert Abbott à Beckett. In addition to 4 full-page etchings, the work also contains 35 glyphographs and 6 woodcuts, the majority of them embedded within the text. These illustrations demonstrate prescient issues of the day, such as the moral and intellectual education of Victorian youths and what Cruikshank believed to be the encroaching evil of industrialisation, in the artist s typically searing fashion. First edition. 8vo. 4 parts (all published): advertisements, contents and list of plates to inside of wrappers, etched plate, [1]-32 pp.; advertisements and contents to inside of wrappers, etched plate with tissue guard, pp. [33]-64; advertisements and contents to inside of wrappers, [2] pp. advertisment, etched plate, [65]-96 pp.; advertisements and contents to inside of wrappers, etched plate, [97]-128 pp.; some minor creasing and dust-soiling. An early and remarkably fine work by Cruikshank of which William Makepeace Thackeray wrote: The collector of humorous designs cannot fail to have them in his portfolio, for they contain (in about a score of copperplates) some of the very best efforts of Mr. Cruikshank s genius...[a]ll the effects are perfectly given, and the expression as good as it could be in the most delicate engraving on steel. The artist s style, too, was then completely formed: and for our part, we should say that we preferred his manner of 1825 to any other which he has adopted since. 31 26. CruIKshAnK, george. (Russians in the Napoleonic Wars). H. Humphrey, London, cruikshank s rare sole work on russia. Perhaps to emphasise the shared revulsion felt towards the Napoleonic invaders across Europe, Cruikshank brought these Russian caricatures to an English audience, leaving the Russian text in place, but generally exaggerating the grotesqueness of the characters to his own style. The originals were mostly by Terebenev and issued in The subjects are: French Generals Retreating; French Post Extraordinary from Moscow to Paris; Napoleon s Fame; A Peasant carrying off a French cannon...; A Review of the French Troops on their returning March through Smolens; A Russian boor returning from his field sports; A Russian peasant loading a dung cart; Russians Teaching Boney to Dance; Specimens of Russians chopping blocks. [vol. 3, Edinburgh: William Tait], London, a rare work, even rarer for its BeiNg BouNd in publisher s canvas. the first issue was in canvas Boards, of which there are very few copies (cohn). Volume I is particularly scarce and is rarely found in the original issue. Indeed, an undated, typewritten note stuck to the upper pastedown and signed AWE (?) reads, This is the finest copy of the first issue I have ever seen. It is a most rare book to get in such a state. Rarer still, the present volume also contains autograph letters by Bowring dated 1824 and 1835; the former is tipped in to the recto of the beginning endpaper of volume I, the other is loosely inserted in the same place. Minor Morals follows Mr. Howard, a wise father and storyteller, as he imparts various wisdom in the form of tales with morals to his three children, Arthur, Edith and George. The book, which is illustrated with etchings by Heath and Cruikshank, was intended to be read by children and was published in three parts (separated as in the present copy) between 1834 and Sir John Bowring ( ) was an English political economist, traveller and writer, and the 4th Governor of Hong Kong. David Bogue, London, a fine copy, from the library of the Best known female collector of the xx century. Publication of George Cruikshank s Magazine was halted after these two issues. It contains the first in a series of Tobacco Leaves, a series of attacks on the noxious weed. This is in keeping with Cruikshank s general shift towards moralising, as seen in works such as The Bottle and The Drunkard s Children. This copy comes from the library of Carrie Estelle Betzold Doheny ( ), one of the most renowned American collectors of the XX century, who also founded the Estelle Doheny Eye Foundation, the Carrie Estelle Doheny Foundation, and the Estelle Doheny Hospital and Pavilion at St. Vincent s Medical Centre, among other philanthropic projects. The Comic Almanack, an amusing look at British life and habits, was an astonishingly popular publication with a circulation of some twenty thousand copies. Bogue [- George Routledge & Sons], London, [ ]. a fine, complete set of cruikshank s own fairy tales, internally in fine order and handsomely BouNd. Puss in Boots is extremely rare (cohn). Although Cruikshank s illustrations for the first English translation of Grimm s Fairy Tales received a great deal of praise, this foray into the world of children s fantasy proved less successful. Many, including Charles Dickens, criticised the artist for the Temperance-inspired slant he put on these traditional stories. In Cinderella, for instance, the court prepares for the ball by setting fire to its entire reserve of alcohol. It was alterations such as this that prompted Dickens to write and publish a satirical attack on Cruikshank entitled Frauds on the Fairies, in Household Words magazine in Nevertheless, there is no denying that Cruikshank s wood-cuts for all four of these fairy stories are extremely fine, and have rarely been as well-preserved as they have in the present edition. With twelve etchings by George Cruikshank, from drawings by an amateur; and the original tale whereon the German opera is founded. For C. Baldwyn, London, rare coloured copy with good provenance Der Freischütz (usually translated as The Marksman or The Freeshooter) was originally a romantic opera with a libretto by Friedrich Kind and a score by Carl Maria von Weber, first performed in Berlin in Cruikshank capitalised on the opera s success by producing this travesty, along with the unidentified Septimus Globus, in which he lampoons Kind s text, suggests popular English ditties such as be used instead of Weber s music and gives sarcastic stage directions such as a song sings itself. The work also contains many embellishments not present in the original opera, such as a cameo from Frankenstein s monster. The opera was re-worked by Hector Berlioz several years later, and this version was first performed in Paris in This copy comes from the library of Carrie Estelle Betzold Doheny ( ), one of the most renowned American collectors of the XX century, who also founded the Estelle Doheny Eye Foundation, the Carrie Estelle Doheny Foundation, and the Estelle Doheny Hospital and Pavilion at St. Vincent s Medical Centre, among other philanthropic projects. Life in Paris; comprising the rambles, sprees, and amours, of Dick Wildfire, of corinthian celebrity, and his bang-up companions, Squire Jenkins and Captain O Shuffleton; with the whimsical adventures of the Halibut family; including sketches of a variety of other eccentric characters in the French metropolis. John Fairburn, London, one of the earliest and and most NotaBle examples of the work of george cruikshank, with fine, clean plates. In 1821, the journalist Pierce Egan published Life in London, an immediate success illustrated by the Cruikshank brothers, George and Robert. In order to capitalise on this success, another journalist, David Carey, decided to publish his own Life in Paris in monthly instalments (just like Life in London) and with a very similar frontispiece to the one that appears in Egan s work; Life in Paris, however, was illustrated only by George Cruikshank. The pictures are extremely spirited and true, and are all the more wonderful in view of the fact that the artist s continental experiences were limited to one day spent in Boulogne. 45 39. CruIKshAnK, george, IllustrAtor; FrederICK locker. London Lyrics. Chapman and Hall, London, a fine copy of locker s work, which constitutes his poetical legacy. (ODNB) Frederick Locker ( ) was born and raised in London and lived in the city for most of his life. This explains his devotion to the city, which is not merely the setting, but also one of the central themes of this collection of sentimental poetry. As well as titles such as The Pilgrims of Pall Mall and A Glimpse of Gretna Green, in the Distance, Locker even turns his attention to Shapero Rare Books very own neighbour - St George s Church, Hanover Square. A review of this work, published in The Spectator on 12 August 1876, states: It is a volume which does not now need any critic s commendation. Most people are agreed to accept the London Lyrics as among the best of English vers de société. Locker worked as a clerk until ill health forced him to leave government service in He then went on to write reviews for various publications including The Times and Punch. He became known as Frederick Locker Lampson after adding his second wife s maiden name to his following her death in Provenance: unidentified bookplate featuring whippet before foliage. The original story of Peter Schlemihl, a man who sells his soul to the devil, was written by Adelbert von Chamisso ( ) and published in The work went on to occupy a significant space in the cultural imagination of several nations, with Schlemihl himself, or characters who suffer a similar fate, featuring in the works of E. T. A. Hoffman, Hans Christian Andersen, Oscar Wilde and more. In keeping with the subject matter, these are some of Cruikshank s more sinister illustrations; the frontispiece, for example, depicts the devil himself unpeeling the protagonist s shadow from the sole of his shoes. These illustrations are beautifully preserved. First edition, third issue (without hyphen in Ave Maria in imprint). 12mo. This bold claim appears on the very first page of the present edition, but is completely at odds with the tongue-in-cheek, self-deprecating style in which the rest of the work is written. Many of the chapters, for example, feature sardonic titles such as: Wherein the author - and through him, the reader - receive some information not unworthy of being known, and at the conclusion of which, the author is left asleep in the reputed house of Don Quixote, to the envy, no doubt, of the reader... 50 44. CruIKshAnK, george, IllustrAtor; horace MAyheW. The tooth-ache. Imagined by... David Bogue, London, [1849]. a painfully funny panorama of dental torture: first edition, first issue. Poems and essays have been written by literary men upon the gout, and there are, of course, countless professional treatises on dentistry; but I have met with only one on toothache which can be called literary: The Tooth-Ache, imagined by Horace Mayhew and realised by George Cruikshank. (Notes and Queries, 10th Series, Aug. 15, 1908, p. 122) The website of the Library of the Royal College of Surgeons describes this as its most amusing book. The work takes the forms of a long comic strip that folds out from the covers and tells the story of a Victorian gentleman suffering from toothache in forty five brilliant illustrations, over the course of which he makes various, increasingly manic, attempts to cure himself before eventually submitting to the wisdom of the dentist. Horace Mayhew ( ) was the brother of Augustus and Henry Mayhew, who feature elsewhere in this catalogue. All three were heavily involved in the establishment of Punch magazine; the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography also claims that Horace was the inspiration for the character of the White Knight in Lewis Carroll s Through the Looking Glass. John Ayrton Paris ( ) was a writer and doctor who became president of the Royal College of Physicians in 1844 and remained in this post until his death twelve years later. Philosophy in Sport was conceived as a children s book whose only initial intended readers were the author s children. It is based on the fairly modern idea of combining educational content with humour and imagination, and demonstrates relatively complicated scientific concepts with the help of mirrors, fireworks and popular toys. Cruikshank s illustrations are not only extremely charming, but also provide clarity to many of the author s explanations. This work is rarely found complete and in such good order, particularly with the advertisements present. Provenance: ex libris bookplates and label of Albert M. Cohn, Cruikshank s bibliographer; labels of bookseller Henry Evans. First edition. 3 volumes. 8vo. 12 pp. advertisements, xviii including half-title and title, 316 pp.; viii including half-title and title, 314 pp., 2 pp. advertisements; vi including half-title and title, 208 pp.; some minor spotting. James Robins & Co., London, an excellent, collector s copy of the scarcer and more collectable india proof issue. In this volume, Cruikshank describes some of the most prominent cases brought before the Bow Street magistrate in his day (changing the names of the parties involved). In the process he defends the reputation of the Charleys, the watchmen of Westminster until the founding of the Metropolitan Police until 1829, who had generally been written off as old and useless, but who Cruikshank showed to be dedicated and conscientious. This issue was published at 15s as opposed to 10s 6d, the price for the standard paper issue. All of the illustrations were designed by Cruikshank, though only the frontispiece was etched by him. 54 CruIKshAnK In glasgow 48. CruIKshAnK, george, IllustrAtor; shadow. Midnight scenes and social photographs: being sketches of life in the streets, wynds, and dens of the City. By Shadow. Thomas Murray and Son [&c.], Glasgow, London & Edinburgh, Inspired by the advent of photography, this work by the author Shadow seeks to relay in prose everything that a camera would have captured. As he writes in the preface to the work: [These scenes] are not creations of the brain, but so far as the writer s knowledge of the art extends - they are truthful. The action takes place over one week in Glasgow, but shows only the city s night life, under titles such as Aversion of the Poor to Religious Tracts, Extreme Destitution, Tribute to Teetotalism, Distressing Case, Pitiful Scene in High Street, Mortality amongst Prostitutes and Slack Work and Soup Kitchens. The idea of portraying the full, grim reality of city life would no doubt have appealed to Cruikshank at this time, as he had taken a vow of sobriety ten years previously and begun to extol the values of the Temperance movement in his work from that time. Provenance: Armorial bookplate of Reuben Jay Flick. First edition. 8vo. 146 pp. including half-title, etched frontispiece by Cruikshank, title, 4 pp. advertisements; some oxidising. Original pictorial yellow boards, preserved in later cloth chemise and slipcase; wear to spine, bookplate to front pastedown. Cohn [ref: 95974] 54 Shapero Rare Books

The categories are: The Modern Mother; The Gay Widow; The Prude; The Flirt; The Affected Old Maid; The Hysterical Wife; and The Fashionable Meteor. The work also features an extremely vibrant, comical frontispiece by Cruikshank entitled A Modern Masquerade in which Punch and Judy appear to make a cameo. Bogue, London, [1848]. first edition, first issue - a fine set in original parts. The Mayhew brothers (Augustus and Henry) were both heavily involved in the production of Victorian satire; Henry, the elder, was in fact one of the founders of Punch magazine. That same style of sharp mockery shines through in the present work. Several chapters, such as The Natural History of Stuck-Up People, appear to contain warnings about men to avoid when searching for a husband. First edition. In 6 monthly parts as issued. 8vo. 12 etchings and title vignette. Publisher s pictorial wrapper, preserved in custom red half morocco solander and matching chemise; some sympathetic paper repairs to spines, minor dust-soiling. 57 51. CruIKshAnK, george, IllustrAtor; WAlter scott. Twelve sketches illustrative of Sir Walter Scott s Demonology and Witchcraft. J. Robins and Co., London: an excellent copy. Scott s Letters on Demonology and Witchcraft was, like the present work, first published in It is believed to have been written more out of financial necessity than any particular interest of Scott s in the occult; he was, in fact, commissioned to write Demonology and Witchcraft by John Murray, who wished to issue it as part of a new series entitled The Family Library. Scott s work takes the form of a series of letter-essays addressed to the author s son-in-law. In the present volume, Cruikshank has selected 12 supernatural scenes described by Scott and illustrated them in highly imaginative, sometimes unsettling, detail. Cruikshank also includes the corresponding excerpt from Scott in brief ahead of each etching. This copy comes from the collection of the American financier Carl H. Pforzheimer Sr. ( ). Though the collection, now housed in the New York Public Library, is mostly dedicated to the works of Shelley and his circle, it comprises around 25,000 books, manuscripts and letters in total. 69 63. CruIKshAnK, robert, IllustrAtor; samuel taylor ColerIdge And robert southey [And others]. The Devil s Walk; a poem, n.d.; The Real Devil s Walk. Not by Professor Porson, 1831; Monsieur Tonson, 1830; Steamers v. Stages, William Kidd [- Alfred Miller], London, an attractive set illustrated with Beautiful wood engravings By Both cruikshank Brothers. Although the illustrations to these volumes are generally believed to have been the work of Robert Cruikshank, Cohn in his bibliography draws his reader s attention to the following letter from George Cruikshank s wife, dated April 1864 and addressed to Mr W. B. Russell, in which she suggests that this is not wholly accurate: SIR, My husband, George Cruikshank, is very much pressed for time, being now employed in finishing his large plate of The Worship of Bacchus, which must be published in two or three weeks; that in reply to your note of enquiry he wishes me to inform you that although his brother Robert s name appears as Illustrator of The Devil s Walk, yet my husband helped his brother so much with those designs, that they may be considered almost (if not quite) his own. The Devil s Walk began life as The Devil s Thoughts, a poem published by Coleridge in The Morning Post and The Gazetteer in The poet Robert Southey then revised Coleridge s original work and re-titled it. The Real Devil s Walk, meanwhile, claims to offer a more truthful approach, embellished with extracts from the diary of the devil himself: Of the Devil s Walk there s been much talk, / And folks seem mighty curious; / Now this is the Real Devil s Walk, / And all the rest are spurious. All four are highly comical in tone. The final two volumes, John Taylor s popular dramatic poem Monsieur Tonson and Steamers v. Stages are both equally satirical works, the latter beginning with the declaration that punning is now the order of the day. 4 volumes. 12mo. 70 64. dubourg, M[AttheW]. Views of the remains of ancient buildings in Rome, and its vicinity with a descriptive and historical account of each subject... Taylor, London, a very good copy with plates clean and fresh. There is little information about Dubourg; the dates of his birth and death are unknown, and even his Christian name is not well attested. He is known to have contributed coloured aquatints to Thomas Williamson, The European in India (London, 1813) and to J. F. Dove, A Picture of St Petersburg (London, 1815), as well as two plates (after drawings by Pugin) to Edward Wedlake Brayley, Illustrations of Her Majesty s Palace at Brighton (London, 1838) and the engravings for Barbara Anne Townshend s delightfully named Sibyl-Leaves, or, Drawing Room Scraps: consisting of Groups of Figures, Flowers, Roses, Birds, Butterflies &c: presenting a Variety of Studies in the Art of cutting Black Paper, for the Instruction and Amusement of Young Ladies (London, 1836). Views in Rome seems to be the first book that the artist produced entirely on his own; it consists of 26 aquatints engraved by Dubourg with a Descriptive and Historical Account of Each Subject. He was also responsbibe for Notable Bridges. A Collection of Engravings of Bridges, showing Construction and Specifications (London, 1825). In his Introduction to Views in Rome Duboug claims that the historical and descriptive sketches which accompany these views have been derived from the most recent, and probably the most judicious authorities, and he ends with an appeal to the authority of Piranesi (though his views are in fact quite different from those of the great Venetian): [I]t is presumed there cannot be offered to the public a work more interesting or more worthy of its patronage, than a selection of Views of Temples, Baths, Triumphal Arches, and other magnificent remains of Roman buildings, from the works of the justly celebrated PIRANESI. He achieves some success before succumbing to excesses and dissipation and ends up in prison. On his release, he turns over a new leaf, marries well, and becomes a star. John Thompson, who provided the woodcuts, was perhaps the ablest exponent of wood-engraving; he cut, in 1839, Mulready s design for the penny postage stamp, and in 1852 designed the figure of Britannia still in use on bank notes. 78 72. howitt, samuel. Orme s Collection of British Field Sports illustrated in twenty beautiful coloured engravings. Edward Orme, London, 1 January 1807-[25 March 1808]. very rare. the first and only edition of the finest and most important sporting Book of the last two centuries. (Schwerdt) Tooley calls it a magnificent work, the most valuable English colour plate book on sport. Although there are fox, stag and hare hunting scenes, the majority of plates depict the shooting of different game birds in deeply rural woods and pastureland. The present copy contains the plates in an early state, printed on sheets watermarked 1804, 1805 or 1806 (Abbey records copies dated as late as 1819). The word chevau in plate 2 has an x added in pencil. a handsome copy with plates uncut. Samuel Howitt (1756/7 1822) was an English painter, illustrator and etcher of animals, hunting, horse-racing and landscape scenes. Howitt was closely associated in his art with Thomas Rowlandson, whose sister he married. Howitt s early watercolour style has similarities to Rowlandson s, but Howitt developed a more individual style as his career as a sporting artist progressed. He seems to have had an innate capacity for drawing animals, from commonplace hare and deer to exotic species that he studied in menageries. He was an animated draughtsman, and his drawings of hunts and sporting events have a fluidity and excitement fitting to the subject. (ODNB). Edward Orme ( ) was, after Rudolph Ackermann, the most important publisher of illustrated books during the short golden age of the coloured aquatint. Orme s output totalled some 700 illustrations, but his monument is his British Field Sports. Provenance: Joel Spitz (small stamps as described). Landscape folio (45.5 x 55 cm). 82 75. JenKIns, JAMes. The Naval achievements of Great Britain from the Year Jenkins, London, [c.1833]. An AttrACtIVe example of the FInest pictorial record of the naval engagements of the napoleonic WArs. The present edition contains several plates of Britain s most significant victories during the Napoleonic wars. These include two plates on the Battle of the Nile, two plates on the Battle of Copenhagen and three plates on the Battle of Trafalgar. The Abbey copy lists two portraits not present here, but the plate count of coloured aquatints of sea battles accords. As a record of naval events spanning a period of over twenty years Jenkins Naval Achievements has no precedent. At no time prior to 1817 had a publisher attempted such a complete volume of documentary naval prints. It is the quality of the accuracy which makes Jenkins so valuable above all, and it is the pictures rather than the text to which the value can be attributed. (Roger Quarm, the National Maritime Museum) These Napoleonic encounters at sea are arguably the best and most attractive plates of their kind. 4to (38 x 30 cm). Dedication leaf, viii pp. introduction, ii pp. list of plates, 148 pp. including letterpress, ii pp. subscribers list, engraved title with hand-coloured vignette, 55 fine hand-coloured aquatint plates, uncoloured outline etching of the Bombardment of Algiers and Battle of Trafalgar at rear, plates watermarked Whatman 1833, bound without portraits as is usual; some occasional light spotting and offsetting, the plates are generally clean and bright. 88 80. leech, John, IllustrAtor; robert smith surtees. Collection of the sporting novels in the original parts. Mr Sponge s Sporting Tour; Handley Cross, Or, Mr Jorrocks s Hunt; Ask Mamma Or, the Richest Commoner in England; Plain or Ringlets; Mr Facey Romford s Hounds; Mr Romford s Hounds. Bradbury and Evans, London, A superb set in original parts of the classic comic sporting novels of the XIX century. In 1838 Surtees published in book form a collection of his magazine articles featuring Mr Jorrocks, the jolly, free-and-easy, fox-hunting grocer (to use Surtees s own description), under the title of Jorrocks s Jaunts and Jollities. A longer, more rounded Jorrocks novel, Handley Cross, appeared in 1843 and another, Hillingdon Hall, in Then came two insipid productions, The Analysis of the Hunting Field (1846) and Hawbuck Grange (1847), both revolving around fox-hunting but lacking plot or strong characterization. His first moderate success came with Mr Sponge s Sporting Tour (1853). This was followed by two novels of a different type, Ask Mamma (1858) and Plain or Ringlets? (1860), in which the sporting interest is only part of a broader picture of provincial society. Although these contain interesting social detail and some memorable characters, they too suffer from having no strong central figure to hold the plot together. His last book, published posthumously in 1865, was Mr Facey Romford s Hounds, which Surtees himself regarded as a good sequel to Mr Sponge and which some critics consider his best novel. (ODNB) 88 Shapero Rare Books

89 As a creator of comic personalities, Surtees is still readable today. Thackeray envied him his powers of observation, while William Morris considered him a master of life and ranked him with Dickens. The novels are engaging and vigorous, and abound with sharp social observation, with a keener eye than Dickens for the natural world. Perhaps Surtees most resembles the Dickens of Pickwick Papers, which was originally intended as mere supporting matter for a series of sporting illustrations to rival Jorrocks. 91 things unattempted yet 82. pocock, george. The Aeropleustic Art, or Navigation in the Air, by the Use of Kites, or Buoyant Sails. Wilson [for Sherwood, London, 1827]. An unusual book primarily concerned with the use of kites in transport - with plates beautifully hand-coloured. The work was sold with plain plates at 20s or with coloured at 25s. The book details the origin and history of the invention, going back to his own childhood. Experimenting with kites and stones, Pocock wondered and grew ambitious. The book continues with accounts of Pocock s experiments with kites, for example using kites to pull boats. Pocock also explains the mechanics, construction and the power of kites. Most notably, Pocock invented and patented the charvolant, a carriage that would be pulled by two kites attached by controllable lines, rather than horses. The name for this apparatus came for the French for kite, cerf-volant, and the French for carriage, char. This carriage could allegedly reach speeds of twenty miles per hour. The book discusses journeys from Bristol to Marlborough stating that they beat one of the London stages to Marlborough by twenty-five minutes, even though the stage had a fifteen minute head start. Ackermann s Repository of the Arts, London, the true first appearance of doctor syntax. Combining light-hearted satire of William Gilpin s theory of the picturesque in art with a central character modelled on Cervantes Don Quixote and Henry Fielding s Parson Adams, Combe created a loveable eccentric whose misadventures on the road structure the Tour. For over a century the many editions and numerous imitations of the Tour attested to the popularity of Combe s humourous hero. (DNB) This typically ambitious Ackermann publication includes the original appearance, in serial form, of Combe s first Tour of Dr. Syntax under the title of The Schoolmaster s Tour, which runs through all four volumes. It was published in book-form under the title Doctor Syntax in Search of the Picturesque in Rare in the original publisher s boards. First edition. 4 volumes. 8vo. 98 uncut In original boards 89. rowlandson, thomas, IllustrAtor; WIllIAM CoMbe. The English Dance of Death [with] The Dance of Life. Ackermann, London, indispensable to any rowlandson collection, one of the essential pivots of any colour plate library. (Tooley) The idea of Death as the universal predator, stretching out his bony hand to seize his prey at moments inopportune and unexpected, showing the vanity of human life and the futility of human pleasures and pursuits, had been pictured by many artists before Rowlandson, notably Holbein... These may have inspired Rowlandson but in his Dance of Death he takes his characters from the world around him, sees them in his own original way, and imparts to the subject his own satirical humour, with its curious combination of the sublime and the ludicrous. It is obvious at a glance that the artist bestowed exceptional care on the illustrations for this book. The union of the gruesome and the grotesque appealed strongly to his imagination, and in completeness of detail and carefulness of grouping the illustrations excel nearly all his other work. The hand-colouring also has been delicately and judiciously applied. Combe s versification is full of wit and vigour... The Dance of Life is full of cheerful and humorous satire of life and its follies. (Hardie) A fine and remarkable set. First editions. 3 volumes. 8vo (26 x 16 cm). 102 92. WestAll, WIllIAM; samuel owen. Picturesque tour of the River Thames. R. Ackermann, London, a classic collection of thames views. This book, along with Ireland s views and Boydell s work, helped establish a canon of most-favoured views of the Thames from the source to the sea: The colouring is less subdued than Boydell s, and there are more un-aquatinted spaces where the interpretation has been left to the colour-washing artist. This gives the plates a greater resemblance to spontaneous water-colour drawings but leads inevitably to a greater disparity between individual copies. (Abbey) First edition. 4to. Folding map, 24 fine hand-coloured plates and 2 hand-coloured vignettes; usual light offsetting to plates. Later red half morocco gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut. 103 93. WestMACott, ChArles (ChArles Molloy). The English spy: an original work, characteristic, satirical, and humorous. Comprising scenes and sketches in every rank of society, being portraits of the illustrious, eminent, eccentric, and notorious. Drawn from the life by Bernard Blackmantle. Sherwood, London, one of the most renowned english colour plate Books, magnificently presented. A political satire on high society, the present work includes chapters on Eton, Oxford, London, Brighton, the Isle of Wight and other fashionable Georgian resorts. Both the text and illustrations are extremely vivid, and the work features some rather coarse language. The fact that many of its subjects were also clearly recognisable to a contemporary readership further contributed to the book s controversy. The bibliographer Gordon Ray has described it as the liveliest and most authentic of a number of aquatint-illustrated books of the 1820s depicting the raffish life of English pleasure seekers. Of the 71 aquatint plates, 68 are by Robert Cruikshank, two are by Thomas Rowlandson, one is by T. Wageman, and one is by G. M. Brightly. Though The English Spy was written and published under the pseudonym Bernard Blackmantle, we now know that the author was the British journalist Charles Molloy Westmacott ( ), who spent his entire working life satirising and disparaging English high society. The first issue is distinguished by two features: plate 28, on page 389 of volume 1, is misdated 1824; and page 222 in volume 2 is blank. Provenance: Armorial bookplate of C. Robert Bignold. First edition, first issue. 2 volumes. 8vo. xxiv, 417, [1] pp.; xi, 399, [1] pp; with 71 hand-coloured aquatint plates and 1 uncoloured woodcut plate, numerous woodcuts in the text. Full red morocco gilt extra by Tout, covers with triple gilt fillets, decorative corners, spines in 6 panelled compartments, gilt lettered direct in second and fourth, others richly gilt, raised bands, top edge gilt, others uncut, original cloth covers and spines bound-in, well preserved in modern redmorocco-backed solander box with faux ribbed spines by Zaehnsdorf; bookplate to verso of upper board. 106 95. [bakst] - reau, louis, denis roche, V. svetlov, A. tessier. Inedited Works of Bakst. Brentano s, New York, a fine example of Bakst s previously unpublished pieces. An outstanding painter, Bakst is best remembered for the costumes and theatrical sets he designed for Diaghilev s Ballet Russes. This work examines many of the artist s other accomplishments. The magnificent illustrations, which include 20 hand-coloured phototype plates, were produced in the French atelier of Daniel Jacomet, one of the leading practitioners of pochoir. They are accompanied by four essays that explore Bakst s life, his contribution to the development of the modern art of Western Europe and his unique interpretation of music. Copies of this work are often found incomplete, as most have been taken apart for their beautiful plates. This example is very unusual for its additional plates and delicate vignette bound in. Folio (32.7 x 26.2 cm). no. 12 of 600 copies. 127, [2] pp. with 30 plates by Bakst, including 20 pochoir, 5 colour printed and mounted and 5 plain, all with lettered tissue guards, colour vignette (normally pasted on publisher s binding) bound in as plate, black and white and colour illustrations in text, 6 additional tipped-in colour printed plates, including 4 from W. 108 96. barbier, george. Le Bonheur du Jour ou les Graces à la Mode, texte et dessins par George Barbier. Chez Meyniel, Paris, The sixteen plates of Le Bonheur du Jour are amongst the largest and most carefully meditated of Barbier s designs. So ambitious was this album that it took him from 1920 to 1924 to complete it to his satisfaction. A study of manners and fashion, it was designed to appeal both to those who like to link the present to the past, and to observers of the current scene. Barbier begins his introduction with a summary of fashion illustration from the XVI century onwards, finding a specific predecessor for his own work in that of Horace Vernet s record of First Empire costume, Incroyables et merveilleuses, published around a hundred years earlier. Barbier saw similarities between the period after the Napoleonic Wars and his own post-great War era, with dandies and their ladies free at last to enjoy frivolities and sensuality. Fine example complete with introduction and index. First edition. Landscape folio (46 x 33.2 cm). 112 98. barbier, george. Falbalas & Fanfreluches. Almanach des Modes presentes, passées et futures pour 1922, 1923, 1924, 1925 and Meynial, Paris, A complete set of this exquisite series displaying fashion in magnificent and imaginative illustrations. The series includes Barbier s depiction of the seven deadly sins (in the volume for 1925). Here one finds a great theme of the Western iconographical tradition at home in Barbier s special world. Anger shows a modish couple quarelling in a formal garden; Envy is displayed by a maid regarding her mistress as she steps from a Rolls Royce; and Gluttony is depicted as a gourmandise. Falbalas et fanfreluches was the last of Barbier s books to reflect contemporary life. Its special value lies in the unique way in which it catches the tone and mood of les années vingts. First edition. 5 volumes. 8vo (25.2 x 17 cm). Each issue with colour vignette to title and 12 colour pochoir plates (60 in total), introductory text by Colette. 114 99. barbier, george. La Guirlande des Mois. Première [-cinquième] année. Meynial, Paris, A fine, complete set of this celebrated periodical, which, although published in a small format due to wartime austerity, is nevertheless extremely luxurious. The early volumes of these beautiful little annual almanacs often include images of men in military uniform. In addition to the pochoir illustrations, Barbier contributed articles from 1918 to 1921 on such topics as the Ballets Russes, epigrams, opera, and the pleasures of love. The fashions depicted show a radical post-war shift in style with the adoption of shorter and fuller skirts, backless gowns, and fabrics that incorporated more risqué elements of the tango. 5 volumes. 12mo (12.4 x 8.4 cm). 31 colour pochoir lithograph plates, illustrations in the text. 122 103. barbier, george; Choderlos de laclos. Les Liaisons Dangereuses. Le Vasseur, Paris, BarBier s last major work. That Barbier would turn his attention to Choderlos de Laclos great novel of sexual intrigue was inevitable; he was even prepared to illustrate the text rather than use it as a point of departure for his own decorative compositions, as in other works. Though he did not neglect the opportunities for decorative treatment of setting and costume that the novel provided, he stuck to the narrative and presented all the big scenes in its intricate plot. In doing so, Barbier gives us the finest illustrations of the novel since Monnet and Gérard s 1796 edition. 2 volumes. 4to (26.6 x 19.9 cm). no. 548 of 720 copies. Le Livre Contemporain, Paris, No. 59 of 120 copies created specially for members of le livre contemporain under the direction of E. de Crauzat and A. Bertaut. This copy belonged to Monsieur C. Gauthier Lathuille. The work itself is a collection of 22 semi-biographical short stories about Petronius, Lucretius, Paolo Ucello, Pocahontas, William Kidd and other historical figures, first published in the newspaper Le Journal between 1894 and Incorporating myth and fantasy with historical facts, they are considered among the first of the genre of biographical fiction. Jorge Luis Borges was extremely fond of Schwob s writing. Barbier s plates are devoted to the subjects that interested him most. While preserving the settings and costumes of their times, he makes them all inhabitants of an elegant, ambiguous country in which conventional expectations are invariably disappointed. Of particular note are the frontispiece, showing the muse of intimate history gazing into a globe and dictating what she sees to Cupid; Clodia accompanying her brother to a Roman brothel; and Pocahontas meeting Captain John Smith. Chez Meynial, Paris, a fine copy of this important collaboration BetweeN BarBier and schmied, signed By BarBier in pencil. luxuriously BouNd By the leading design BiNder in paris, henri creuzevault. One of the most important works by Barbier, rivalled only by his Le bonheur du jour. Albert Flament s text of 1914 is a diffuse meditation, half-waking and half-dreaming, which takes as its point of departure the great roles of world theatre. Barbier s vignettes have a general relevance to the theme of acting but most of his plates, at least one of which dates from 1916, are simply magnificent decorative compositions. George Barbier ( ), was the supreme decorative designer of the Art Deco movement, whose work centred on the human figure, displayed in a thousand different settings and costumes. He had the faculty, as Valéry wrote, of embodying myth through images in such a way that workers in mere words could only look on in awe. Folio (37.2 x 29.2 cm), no. 124 of 150 copies. La belle édition, Paris, fresh example of the first french edition, from the deluxe part of the limited run printed in a large format on JaPon paper. one of only 50 copies, signed By BarBier, miomandre and the editor; very rare. The designs, although somewhat fantastic in treatment, do convey the impression produced by Nijinsky in his famous characters. The foreword [by Francis de Miomandre] is excellent. (Beaumont) In his brief time, Nijinsky was the most famous male dancer in the world, a preeminence due in part to his extraordinary virtuosity. But it was not his virtuosity alone that made him such a powerful stage presence. As contemporary reports make clear, Nijinsky was a great and unusual actor. The ideal Fokine interpreter, he was able to expand a simple choreographic design into a rich dramatic portrait, using, in keeping with Fokine s dicta, the whole body as an expressive instrument. Nijinsky s influence as a dancer was immediate and huge. That ballet, nearly extinguished artistically in western Europe, was revived in this century is due to him and other great dancers of his generation, such as Anna Pavlova and Karsavina, as well as to Diaghilev. That male ballet, utterly extinguished, was also revived is due to him preeminently. Nijinsky was the first real ballet star of the male sex that Europe had seen since the retirement of Auguste Vestris nearly a century earlier. He initiated a renaissance. 140 WIth 3 original zinc printing plates 114. barbier, george; VAudoyer, [JeAn-louIs]. Album dédié a Tamar Karsavina. Corrard, Paris, a unique ensemble comprising a mint copy of BarBier s early masterpiece, trial proof prints and original zinc printing plates. The cover design pays homage to Beardsley [...] and its 12 pochoir plates depict Karsavina in her principal parts. That their purpose is again to stir the emotion and delight the eye of the viewer, not to document the performance, is demonstrated by Le spectre de la rose, glimpsed at the moment when the phantom lover, of whom the young girl has dreamed after the ball, is about to disappear as the rose drops from her hand. (Ray). The copy comes with four loose black and white trial proofs that correspond to plates 1, 7, 11 and 12 in the book. Very unusually, the proofs incorporate embossed elements, which do not appear in the final version of the plates. Having experimented with the idea, the publisher opted in the end for flat printing, either to avoid high costs or possibly because the technique did not work well with pochoir colouring. The three original printing plates offered here were used for illustrations 2, 7 and 10 in the book. Together with the trial proofs they give a clear picture of complexity of the process of conceiving and producing a high quality illustrated work. First edition. Folio (33.5 x 27.5 cm). no. 276 of 500 copies (plus 12 on japon) printed on papier vélin d arches, initialled by the publisher. La Leçon d amour dans un parc is one of the best known novels by the French writer and literary critic René Tardiveau ( ), who wrote under the pseudonym René Boylesve. Originally published in 1902, the novel was inspired by nostalgia for the pre-revolutionary XVIII century French court in which flirtation, debauchery and sexual intrigue spiced up the monotony of court life. This edition is illustrated by the Italian painter Umberto Brunelleschi ( ), who was well known for his work for the Gazette du Bon Ton and the Journal des Dames et des Modes. His designs for La Leçon d amour dans un parc are some of his best experiments in the field of erotic illustration. 150 119. ColIn, paul. Le Tumulte Noir. Editions d Art, Paris, spectacular scenes from the Jazz age. Le Tumulte Noir was designed for and sold at the Bal Nègre, a one-night-only event organised by Colin as a tribute to Paris black craze. The album is divided into two parts. The first is dedicated to Josephine Baker and black musicians and dancers. Exquisitely stylised, it is Paul Colin at his very best. The second part is a satire of Paris under the spell of the Charleston. Following in the steps of Sem, Colin satirises the Parisian music hall stars of the moment: Mistinguett, Maurice Chevalier, Cecile Sorel and the Dolly Sisters, as well as the chansonniers Rip and Saint-Granier, the cubist Jean Borlin of the Ballet Suedois, and the tennis champion Suzanne Lenglen. Paul Colin ( ) was one of France s greatest poster artists. Made famous in 1925 by his poster for the Revue Nègre, which helped to launch the career of Josephine Baker (who became his mistress), he worked for over forty years in the theatre, creating not only posters but also numerous sets and costumes. Very Art Deco at the outset of his career (Le Tumulte Noir is a masterpiece of the genre), Colin s style quickly became more personal - and harder to categorise; the synthetic accuracy of his portraits and the evocative force of his posters for grand causes so marked him as a master of visual communication that his work retains its relevance today. The lithographs are vividly coloured by Jean Saudé, who is regarded as the leading practitioner of pochoir, a printing technique in which each colour is applied through a separate stencil. His prints have a vibrancy of colour that has rarely been equalled. First edition. Folio (49.5 x 33 cm). one of 500 copies on PaPier vélin. 43 full-page original lithographs on 22 sheets, including 1 double-page colour pochoir by Jean Saudé. 152 120. gladky, serge; salmon, André. Synthèse du Costume Théâtral. Trente planches en couleurs. Le Théâtre national [Mondial?], Paris, Very rare album containing 33 designs by the Cubist and Art Deco painter Serge Gladky ( s), a Russian based in Paris, one of the precursors to the development of abstract art. Gladky worked as a graphic artist and architect, using ornamental and geometric patterns composed of sleek lines and sharp angles, inspired by nature and animals. He was also heavily involved in popularising pochoir printmaking in Paris in the early 1900s, a reaction against the mass printing techniques that often produced dull colours. The introduction to this album is by André Salmon, a French writer and art critic who, with Guillaume Apollinaire, was one of the early defenders of Cubism. In the text the poet expands on his love of Russian costumes and on his admiration for Gladky. Praising the artist s ability to convey the essence of Russian culture through geometric shapes, he calls the plates inventions merveilles, miraculeuses. 4to (33.5 x 25.5 cm). no. 46 of 170 copies. ff. [8], 33 pochoir plates (including frontispiece), some with gold or silver, on laid paper. Paperback, pochoir illustration and signature by the artist to upper board; small marginal repairs and light stains to covers, text block clean. 9,500 [ref: 93897] 152 Shapero Rare Books

Schmied, Paris, a pristine example of this Beautiful edition, enriched with two additional suites of plates on fine JaPon paper. In the introductory note... Théo Schmied points out the natural happiness of the interconnection between his father s cultural tendencies and art of the book and the world of the Near East as it is filtered by the inspired Mardrus translations... throwing light on the two fundamental aesthetic coordinates we need in order to understand how the details are made subordinate by the elegant decorative unity expressed by the plates, that is, the purity of the Egyptian graphic art and the will of the Italian primitives. The layout shows either a text harmoniously arranged in respect of double and single plates of various size, or a text framed by rules forming a variety of geometrical patterns and decorated by bout de lignes in sienna. The illustrations mainly show subdued and delicate pastel colours. - Nasti 4to (35.5 x 28.5 cm). no. 94 of 155 copies on madagascar PaPer (plus 10 for collaborators, and 7 on japon), signed By the artist beneath the limitation. 12 double-page and 4 single-page colour wood engravings. two further suites of illustrations on JaPon PaPer, one in colour numbered 10, another in black and white numbered 9, signed by the artist. Sports & Divertissements is a striking collaboration combining Satie s masterly avant-garde compositions with Martin s playful designs. Gillmor characterised these piano pieces as Satie s finest creative achievement, a superb marriage of style and idea, a crystallization of virtually everything that had preceded it, the purest distillation of an aesthetic ideal toward which he had been groping for a quarter century. Martin, one of the most distinctive Art Deco illustrators, contributed to Gazette du Bon Ton, Harper s Bazaar and many of the most luxurious publications of the age. A trade issue comprising just one plate was also published, with which this edition is sometimes confused. First edition. Landscape folio (40.5 x 44.5 cm). no. 71 of 225 copies. 160 124. poiret, paul. Les Choses vues par Georges Lepape. Maquet, Paris, one of 300 deluxe copies in an extraordinary slip case By a pupil of JeaN de gonets. presented By poiret to the german art director and filmmaker max knaake, the Book was later sent Back to the former for safe keeping during the turbulent war years. fine association copy. très rare. (Carteret) These magnificent plates present designs by Paul Poiret ( ), one of the most influential and notorious designers of the early XX century. His gowns followed the natural line of a slim, uncorseted body, although many women still had to resort to longline corsets to achieve the same effect. Compared to the elaborately detailed and constructed gowns that many fashion designers produced, his designs were audaciously simple and bold, and sometimes quite far-sighted. For example, his robe de minute, a gown made of two rectangles of fabric, was created in 1911, ten years before near-identically constructed chemise dresses became widespread. The models heads are simply wrapped in colourful turbans, in contrast to the elaborately arranged coiffures that many fashionable women favoured. The inscription, by Poiret, reads: à M. Max Knaake Berlinois mais qui mériterait d être Parisien [To Max Knaake, who is from Berlin but deserves to be a Parisian.] the Book is accompanied By a manuscript letter sent By knaake to poiret at the BegiNNiNg of the first world war. Written in almost perfect French on 2 March 1915, the letter is a testament to the deep friendship between the two. In it, Knaake reflects on his collaboration with Poiret in Cologne, where he was involved in the designer s first exhibition in 1914, and the events that led to his current circumstances; Knaake was in France when the war broke out, but managed to escape to Corsica, where he stayed in a convent under official scrutiny and with strict limitations placed on his communications with the external world. In the second part of the letter Knaake politely asks Poiret to keep the book safe until the situation changes, as it is very dear to him, particularly because of the designer s presentation inscription. He expresses deep gratitude for Poiret s help and friendship and finishes: The world is big and art has no Motherland. Provenance: Presentation inscription from Paul Poiret to Max Knaake ( ). 4to (33.5 x 30.5 cm). no. 146 from deluxe run of 300 copies (of total edition of 1000), with three plates on papier des manufactures impériales du Japon.
