3 Andrew Gulliford- FLC Professor of History has conducted a number of interviews that are stored in the Center of Southwest Studies archives. He specializes in environmental history and regularly leads tours throughout the West. Ruth Lambert-San Juan Mountains Association Cultural Program Director specializes in heritage outreach and education, teaches oral history workshops, directs groups of volunteers to conduct oral histories in La Plata County, and is also part of the Southwest Colorado Genealogical Society. Duane Smith- FLC Professor of History also has conducted many interviews that are stored at the Center of Southwest Studies. He specializes in the history of Durango and Southwest Colorado and has written many books on the subject.

5 The following is a selected list of oral history literature available to FLC students. Each resource is listed under its location and includes a brief description of its contents.

6 The Tape-Recorded Interview: A Manual for Field Workers in Folklore & Oral History by Edward D. Ives details how to use equipment, what the research steps are from start (finding informants) to finish (processing for archive), and how to interview regular people. Oral History for the Local Historical Society by Willa K. Baum explains how to begin an oral history project with a focus on interviewing individuals in your local community. This is an older resource but considered a classic in the field. Oral History: An Interdisciplinary Anthology ed. by David K. Dunaway and Willa K. Baum was recently updated with an emphasis on oral history around the world and how it is used in different academic fields.

7 Doing Oral History: A Practical Guide by Donald A. Ritchie goes in depth and is organized in FAQ format (not step-by-step) with detailed answers following each question. The concept-guided format may be confusing, so use the index. Oral History: The Challenges of Dialogue ed. by Marta Kurkowza-Budzan and Krzysztof Zamorski is an anthology of articles discussing challenges within various stages of oral history projects, including developing trust, how gender influences interview responses, interviewing politicians, stirring memories of traumatic events, and what to share with the general public. Oral History by Patricia Leavy is an in-depth, process-oriented resource emphasizing details on research design, methodology, and writing about results. Examples of successful/unsuccessful case studies are included.

8 Oral History and the Radio Documentary Feature: Introducing the 'COHRD Form by Siobhan McHugh is for students interested in using a radio documentary series to present material from an oral history project (contact campus radio station KDUR to discuss a proposal and learn to use equipment) Oral History Review (journal) is published by the Oral History Association (USA). Contains articles, book and film reviews, and bibliographies. Older volumes are available on JSTOR; the current volume is freely available on the publisher s website. Oral History (journal) is published by the Oral History Society (UK), and focuses more on oral history in the United Kingdom. Available on JSTOR. Oral History Forum (journal) is the publication of the Canadian Oral History Association.

9 Transcribing and Editing Oral History by Willa K. Baum is a technical guide for after-interview processing, including transcription, auditing, editing, indexing, & legalities. The American Indian Oral History Manual: Making Many Voices Heard by Charles E. Trimble, Barbara W. Sommer, Mary Kay Quinlan addresses the unique concerns of collecting oral history from American Indians, discusses oral history vs oral traditions, and details the general process for collecting oral histories. Case studies are included. A Guide to Oral History and the Law by John A. Neuenschwander is a technical resource including samples of legal forms, oral history as evidence in legal cases, defamation, copyright/ownership, privacy, IRB, and case studies.

11 The Oral History Manual by Barbara Sommer and Mary Kay Quinlan is a process-oriented, very technical resource about equipment, planning, budget, and legal/ethical issues. The Oral History Workshop: Collect and Celebrate the Life Stories of Your Family and Friends by Cynthia Hart and Lisa Samson is the easiest to read and understand. It is useful for those wanting to collect oral histories from people close to them rather than for academic inquiry. Creative how-to guides for presenting findings through writing & scrapbooking are included.

12 Recording Culture: Audio Documentary and the Ethnographic Experience by Daniel Makagon and Mark Neumann explains the importance of recording for honest representation in the historical record. Creative techniques to present qualitative research are included. Recording Oral History: A Guide for the Humanities and Social Sciences by Valeria Raleigh Yow is an extremely detailed, in-depth guide to oral history, including law/ethics, interview process, types of projects, technique, analysis, and interpretation.
