A very good copy of a rather fragile book, often found restored or rebound, This is one of the more uncommon Owen Jones titles. $1,500 First edition of this handsome illuminated gift book, with the Owen Jones titles reflecting his Alhambra style. The author, who was born Catherine Bell ( ), was an English socialite, journalist, and writer. Her life was plagued by scandals. She married Rev. Francis Lee ( ), a chaplain to the Prince of Wales, and bore him two children. However, Catherine and her husband eventually became estranged, and she took a lover, Captain George de Blaquiere, son of the soldier and politician John Blaquiere. Lee successfully sued Blaqueire for criminal conversation, but was unable to obtain a divorce by means of a bill in Parliament, and ultimately committed suicide.

She may have married Thomas Jenkins, the first patron of the Countess of Blessington, whose name she used. Ultimately, she acquired property in Southern Italy and started using the title Baroness de Calabrella. By the 1840s, she purchased a newspaper, the Court Journal, that covered societal matters. She wrote novels, short stories, and edited the collection of historical tales, Evening at Haddon Hall (1846), which was very popular. She also wrote The Ladies Science of Etiquette (1844), which went through a number of editions in both England and America, and an American gift book, The American Book of Beauty (1845). McLean, p. 88. Item #2 Cundall's First Illuminated Book 3. [CUNDALL, Joseph]. A Booke of Christmas Carols, Illuminated From Ancient Manuscripts in the British Museum. London: Henry Bohn, [1846]. Small octavo. Sixteen ff. Frontispiece and three full-page illustrations; each page features an illuminated border. Color-printed by M. and N. Hanhart with borders by Brandard. Type of Charles Whittingham on thick cards. Publisher's gold cloth decorated in green with central, blue octagonal title panel. All edges gilt. Minor soiling and wear to boards. Light wear to crown and tail of spine. Small hole in gutter of preliminary blank. Slight toning and foxing. Contemporary ink signature on verso of front flyleaf. Binder's ticket on lower rear pastedown. A very good, bright copy of a fragile book. $650 Cundall's first illuminated edition. This book was later issued by Bohn with the original sheets when he took over the business after Cundall's financial failure. According to McLean's Victorian Book Design, "In 1845, a notable example of illuminated printing was published by Joseph Cundall. This was A Booke of Christmas Carols [...] the text was overprinted, in Old Face, Whittingham at the Chiswick Press.

It was issued in a variety of decorative bindings [...] including embossed and colourprinted white paper on boards [...] Cundall published several more small illuminated books, including The Creed, The Lord's Prayer and the Ten Commandments (1848), and Words of Truth or Wisdom (1848)..." (p ). Item #3 One of the Few Works Printed in Color by the Chiswick Press, One of 2,000 Copies 4. [CUNDALL, Joseph, compiler]. Songs, Madrigals and Sonnets. A Gathering of Some of the Most Pleasant Flowers of Old English Poetry. London: Longman, Brown, Green and Co., Twelvemo. 66 pp. Title-page and prefatory matter printed in black and double-ruled in red. Additional color-printed title-page and fifty-seven pages illustrated and printed in full color from wood blocks designed by Absolon and engraved by Collins & Co. Publisher s red cloth stamped in gilt and blind, gilt spine. All edges gilt. Binding extremities slightly rubbed. Spine lightly toned, minor wear to crown and tail of spine. Very minor foxing. A few leaves slightly loose or loose. Rear joint slightly cracked, but sound. Overall, a very bright copy of a rare work. $300 First edition, one of 2,000 copies. In Victorian Book Design, McLean notes that Songs, Madrigals, and Sonnets is one of the few works printed in color by the Chiswick Press and one of its most important besides the monumental Byrne s Euclid (1847), which McLean describes as one of the oddest and most beautiful books of the whole century.

In the preface, Cundall writes, In selecting the Songs, Madrigals, and Sonnets in this little volume, I have merely endeavoured to choose those which are the most familiar and the most pleasant. The only arrangement that has been attempted is like that of a garden; flowers of all ages and all hues are set side by side, each adding to the general beauty. It contains writings from Shakespeare, Milton, Marlowe, Coleridge, Spenser, Herbert, and others. OCLC lists seven copies, only one of which is in the United States (American Philosophical Society Library). Item #4 With Numerous Chromolithographic Illustrations, Each with a Bible Verse 5. EVANS, Edmund. The Illuminated Scripture Text Book with Interleaved Diary for Memoranda and a Coloured Illustration for Every Day. London: Frederick Warne & Co., [1875]. Binding extremities a bit worn, spine slightly toned. Front hinge cracked, but sound. Light foxing, contemporary ink inscriptions on the blank leaves, with most of the writing space empty. A very good, tight copy. $300 Fourth edition. The Preface refers to it as a Pictorial Edition that is in every respect equal to its predecessors, and in some points superior. Though pagination differs between the 1872 edition (108 pp.) and the 1873 and 1874 editions (76 pp.), what textual differences there are between those editions and the fourth edition is

something we cannot determine without being able to compare them. All editions are scarce, with OCLC recording a combined total of seven copies of the 1872, 1873, and 1874 editions, the majority of them in the U.K. Edmund Evans ( ) was a wood-engraver and printer. He was apprenticed to Ebenezer Landells at the age of fourteen. Evans set up his own printing and engraving office at Racquet Court off of Fleet Street and developed a reputation for his color work. He remained at Racquet Court for fifty years and became the most successful engraver and printer from wood of his generation (McLean, pp ). OCLC records nine copies, only two in the United States, at the Huntington and University of North Carolina. 6. Heures choisies de Dames Chrétiennes.
