1 Volume 24, Issue 12 December 2018 A Holly Jolly Christmas December 3 This year s family Christmas party will be held on Monday, December 3 from 6:00-8:00 pm. Candy Cane Chris the Elf, a funologist from Silly Safaris, will share humor and animals including a reindeer during two programs. The first program will begin at 6:15 and the second at 7:15. with Christmas music preceding each show. Santa Claus will be available through the evening to hear Christmas wish wishes and sit for photos. Magician Marc Lehmann will astound visitors with magic as they wait to see Santa. Children will be able to choose a craft and a free Christmas book to take home at the end of the night. Refreshments will be available for children and their families. This evening of family fun is open to the public and registration is not required. We hope to see you December 3! This year s Christmas book giveaway is made possible by 2017 Eugene & Marilyn Glick Indiana Authors Regional Author Award winner Lori Rader-Day and the Indianapolis Public Library Foundation. Trim the Tree at Thorntown Heritage Museum Celebrate the holidays at the Thorntown Heritage Museum! On Saturday, December 8, the museum will host a Tree-Trimming Party. Participants will decorate the tree with ornaments that were crafted during the November 29 Make-It-and-Take-It program. Snacks and games will be provided, too. All children (and their guardians) are welcome, even if they didn t make a decoration during the November program. There will be fun for children of all ages. Please join us! Holiday hours: The library will be closed on December 24th and 25th for Christmas. We will close at 4:00 p.m. on New Year s Eve and remain closed New Year s Day.

We ll celebrate Grinchmas on Tuesday, December 11th from 6:00-7:00 in library meeting rooms. December Book Discussion: No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency December s book discussion selection is The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith. The first in a 19-book series of the same name, this mystery takes the reader to Botswana, where Precious Ramotswe is the country s only - and finest - female detective. Her methods may not be conventional,, but she's got warmth, wit and canny intuition on her side, not to mention Mr J.L.B. Maketoni, the charming proprietor of Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors. Precious is going to need them all as she sets out on the trail of a missing child, a case that tumbles the heroine into a hotbed of strange situations and more than a little danger... All are welcome to join the group, which will meet on Monday, December 10, at 1:30, even if they haven t finished reading the book. Light refreshments will be served, and discussions usually last one hour. Copies of the book are available for checkout at the adult circulation desk. SOCKtober Success! Thanks to the generosity of local residents, the American Legion Auxiliary s October sock collection for the Veteran s Home in Lafayette was a huge success! Items collected included 260 pairs of socks, 78 pairs of underwear, 77 undershirts, and one pair of gloves. Thank you all for your support. Ornament Contest Winners Congratulations to our ornament contest winners: 1st place, Donna Ballard; 2nd place, Karen Niemeyer; 3rd place, Shazia Baker; and 4th place, Laverna Truitt. Brian McCullough s How the Internet Happened: From Netscape to iphone explores this time period from its humble origins (the Internet wasn t really meant to change the world), through the development of web browsers and other innovations such as ebay, Napster, Google, and Myspace. How far we ve come, considering that when computers were first developed in the 1940s and 50s, it was never imagined that the common man or woman would ever need, much less have use for, them. Likewise, developers of the early web never thought that their creation would have a place in people s daily lives. McCullough follows the development of the Internet, including the rise and fall of services like CompuServe and AOL. Remember when, in 1995 AOL subscribers paid $9.95 for five hours of access, and each additional hour cost $2.95? Today, many users own computers, streaming devices, and phones that sip away at data plans nearly 24/7. Check out this fascinating and approachable history of the Internet. Noah s Ark Registration Due Those who preregistered for the Noah s Ark Arctic Friends Animal Workshop need to make their payments ($10 per animal) by Monday, January 7. The workshop will take place on Saturday, January 26; participants will select a time between 10 a.m. and noon and the process will take minutes. Registration forms are available at the youth circulation desk. January Taste of Home The next Taste of Home potluck program will take place on Monday, January 7 at 6:00 p.m. New cooks (and recipes!) are always welcome!
