2 4-H STORY the 4-H story is a very important part. It should focus on the project(s) for which the BOOK is being submitted: conveying how 4-H participation has contributed to development of life skills (self-respect, responsibility, cooperation, critical thinking, etc.), influenced the member in school, influenced the member s use of leisure time, and the member s career plans. The following outline may help in developing the 4-H story. It is divided into parts merely to help outline what information could be relayed in the story. DO NOT identify these parts in the story: Introduce yourself including age, interests, parents, brothers and sisters, where you live, where you go to school and when/why you joined 4-H. Describe the project(s) for which you are submitting the BOOK, how 4-H helped you learn things about this subject you didn't know, how your project grew in size and scope and things you tried (successful or not.) State if you met your goals; why or why not? Identify other 4-H projects and/or 4-H activities including major learning experiences, special interests and unusual situations you encountered. Explain how 4-H has helped you become a better leader and citizen, how 4-H has increased your interest and participation in community affairs and what you have learned from team efforts. Describe how 4-H helped you feel good about yourself, influenced your school and career goals and use of leisure time. Discuss future plans and career/s you want to pursue. REMEMBER: The 4-H Story is limited to six (6) typewritten, printed, or neatly written double spaced pages. It can include some information from past 4-H years but should focus on the current 4-H year. PROJECT RECORD(S) Include only current 4-H year s market and/or breeding project records in the order listed in the Table of Contents, separated by dividers. See pages 4-5 for detailed information about completing the project record. 4-H MEDIA Contains 4-H clubs, projects, or activity photographs (maximum of 2 pages of photographs per project or club), news clippings (3, one-sided pages maximum), and correspondence (3 items maximum). There should be at least one page of each of the three types of media! a. Photographs - (2, one-sided pages per project or club maximum) Photographs should tell a story or illustrate personal growth with appropriate captions. Action shots and sequences are a good way to show progress in project or club work. Layering is not allowed. Mount photographs with rubber cement. 3 b. News Clippings (3, one-sided pages maximum) Name of newspaper and date of article are required. Underline or highlight your name. Must be 4-H related articles. Original clippings encouraged. Based on their score, judges will decide which youth to interview. A total combination of scores with the BOOK and interview, youth may be selected to represent Lyon County 4-H in the AIRK contest (at NJLS, Intermediate and Senior age youth). 4-H will coordinate with FFA to determine who will represent Lyon County in a specific age and specie division. 4 4-H Market or Breeding Livestock Record Completed livestock project records are MANDATORY to show at LCJrLS and NJLS whereas a BOOK is optional. Junior (9-10 years of age as of January 1 st of current year) all pages must be handwritten in blue or black ink, only. Computer generated pages will not be accepted for 4-H Juniors! Intermediate (11-13 years of age as of January 1 st of current year) Members have the option of hand Senior (14 years and above as of January 1 st of current year) Members have the option of hand ** SENIORS an additional requirement for seniors is the resume. Preparing a resume will help develop skills invaluable to their future. Guidelines on page 6 for writing a resume are included. Seniors are encouraged to use creativity while remembering resumes are professional documents. This record has undergone revision to make it more user-friendly and address issues or concerns. Please, make note of sections or calculations that don t make sense and relay them to UNCE-Lyon County staff. At the end of the 4-H year, staff will review any questions and suggestions. A completed 4-H Market or Breeding Livestock Record should be compiled in the following order: In order to participate in the Lyon County Jr. Livestock Show (LCJrLS) or NJLS, all livestock members must complete a Project Record (4-H and/or FFA). The 4-H year is October 1 st September 30 th. A market project begins the day you start feeding your animal or put money into the project; NOT the day you tag and/or weigh-in. A market project ends the day you sell your animal. Your project(s) may consist of one or more animals. The definition of homegrown or home produced varies between species and shows. For clarification on your project s status, refer to the current year s rules of the show you are entering (i.e. NJLS Rule & Information booklet). COVER is to be the green 4-H regulation binder, 8 ½ x 11. This can be purchased from the Lyon 4-H Leaders Council and are available at the office for $3.00 (free to first year members). On certain pages, you will need to estimate amounts/entries as your record is due before the actual selling (end) of your project. Complete as much as possible of the record prior to its due date. When requested, estimate or project using historical data (example, the daily gain) and current information (current market value). An asterisk (*) should be used to indicate estimates. 3/5/2014 4
5 Pages 8 11 in the 4-H Market Livestock Record (Animal Health Record, Ration Sheet, Market Animal Weight Record, & Lyon County 4-H Livestock Weight Chart) and page 8 in 4-H Breeding Livestock Record (Animal Health Record) need to be completed for each animal in your project. Different shows have different requirements for their record keeping contests. Check with the sponsoring organization if you are unsure of the applicable rules. If you have no information, or didn t participate, in the indicated activity or section of the record book, place an N/A or Not Applicable. This indicates you had no response as opposed to forgetting to address the question/request. A budget (pg.4) has been added. This will aide in compliance with NJLS AIRK contest requirements; more importantly, it provides a valuable tool in estimating project profitability. It should be completed at the beginning of the project. Sale commission varies with the sale/auction; check with the sponsoring organization to determine commission. A due date will be selected in April (approx. 2 weeks before they are due to NJLS) for project records and BOOKS. The due date is expected to be announced in February. Remember to update (add placings, awards, premiums, etc.) in your 4-H Market (or Breeding) Livestock Record before submitting your Portfolio at the end of the 4-H year (Sept. 30 th ). 3/5/2014 5
