Teen and Technology Librarian Gabriella Vargas is shown sitting at the laptop bar that becomes very busy in the afternoons. Dates: Oct. 26, Nov. 2, 9, and 16 Time: 10am-11am No latecomers please! Ready to Read for ages 3-5 years old: Stories, songs, finger plays, snack, playtime, and a make at home craft package. Concentrating on listening comprehension, language skills and peer socialization. Dates: Oct. 25, Nov. 1, 8, and 15 Time: 10am to 11:30am Register for these rograms by ing us at youthservices@collingswoodlib.org. Please include your child s name, age, your phone number. Use name of class for subject heading. Collingswood Reads Book Club Join other members of the community for a lively discussion of recently-published books in the Peter R. Childs Community Room. Our next regularly scheduled book pick will be Born a Crime by Trevor Noah. We will meet to discuss this book on Wednesday, November 28 th at 7 pm.

3 Summer/Fall 2018 Newsletter Page 3 Poetry Event with Tom Mallouk November 15, :30-8 PM Peter P. Childs Community Room As a practicing psychotherapist, Dr. Mallouk has been transforming his interest in the healing potential of conversation and the spoken word into poetry. His poems are rich and accessible, and he takes pride in presenting them in an engaging and entertaining way. A poetry open mic will follow the presentation. Join him at this all-ages event this fall. As part of the Library s Summer Programs, FOL again co-sponsored a Community Project to help Collingswood Food Pantry at St. Paul s, and it was a great success! Thanks to all those who donated items. There were over 200 items donated as well as over $150 in monetary donations. This included $100 from Friends of the Library matching the first 100 items donated. Thanks again to all who contributed to make this project successful. Purchase with purpose. Shop at and Amazon donates to Collingswood Friends of the Library.

4 Summer/Fall 2018 Newsletter Page 4 President s Message: Each year I look forward to the Book Festival, to me it starts the fall season. Celebrating authors and books is the best time of the year for me. This year the weather was great, and the Book Festival committee outdid themselves getting everything ready for their 16th year. Friends gave out free children s books again this year to everyone who stopped by the craft tent in Loompaland. The Friends are always looking for new board members to help us, help the library. We meet the 2 nd Monday of each month at 6pm in the New Jersey Room. Congratulations to Anna Zou, recipient of our Friends of the Library scholarship. We wish her the best of luck in college. Also, special recognition to Collingswood Middle School 8th graders: Emanuel Ball, Sarah Johnson, Myles Coulombe & Isabella Verdone who were the recipients of the Doris Hand & Friends of the Library award. Anita Director s Message: A Note About Museum Passes and the FOL A lot of folks (even those who are members of Collingswood Friends of the Library) don t know all of the wonderful things that the Friends do for the library and the community. The majority of our museum passes, for example, come from the FOL. While these passes are generally rather expensive, the savings for patrons is equally great. Take our Discovery Museum Pass, for example. Though this pass costs quite a lot, the average family can save big bucks on tickets with this pass, as it allows free admission for families -- even family of six! At $14.95 (plus tax) for adults and children over 12 months, that could be a savings of over $90 on just one visit. With an average borrowing period of 3-4 days, one pass can save two families that much money each week! The savings (and venues) aren t just for kids, either. Our Grounds for Sculpture Pass allows admission for up to four people, which equates to $72 saved for four adults! The library model has always worked this way we buy a collection that everyone uses and everyone shares -- and thus we pool our resources for greater savings. There s another bonus, though: a shared collection can also foster community. We often see two (or more!) families taking their collective households to museums together on one pass; it doesn t get much better than that! If you haven t borrowed a museum pass yet, ask the library staff how to get started. You ll be amazed how much you can see, learn, and experience all for free! Cheers, Carissa
