(Format, Paragraph, Indention/Special, Hanging, By 0.5 ) Indicate the medium of publication (material type) Print, Web, DVD, etc. Alphabetize your reference list by the authors last names. If there is no author, list the title first, and alphabetize the source by the title. If the title begins with a number, alphabetize as though the number were spelled out. (9 Short Stories would be alphabetized as though it were Nine Short Stories). Titles of short stories, chapters of books, or magazine articles: Use quotation marks. Capitalize important words (not prepositions, a, an, the, etc., except at the beginning of the title). End with a period inside the quotation marks. Titles of books, journals, or magazines: Italicize the title Capitalize important words (not prepositions, a, an, the, etc., except at the beginning of the title). End with a period. Title within a title If the title within a larger title is normally in quotes, retain the quotes. Use single quotes on the interior title if the main title is in quotes: New Perspectives on Poe s The Raven. (article about a poem) If the title within a larger title is normally in italics: If the larger title is in quotes, retain the italics on the title within: The Saint as a Young Man: A Reappraisal of The Catcher in the Rye. (article about a book) If the larger title is in italics, use regular type for the title within; do not use italics or quotes: Twentieth Century Interpretations of The Catcher in the Rye (book about a book) Abbreviations (see section 7 in the MLA Handbook for more): Ed. or Eds. Editor or Editors (used before the editor(s) name(s)) ed. or eds. editor or editors (used after the editor(s) names(s)) ed. edition Vol. Volume (as in Vol. 5) vols. volumes (as in 5 vols.) N.p. or n.p. no place of publication or no publisher n.d. no date of publication Most common abbreviations can be capitalized without using periods (CD, DVD, CD-R, USA, etc.) Initials should be capitalized with periods and spaces between the letters (J. R. R. Tolkein). Use U and P for university press publishers. (Ohio State UP, U of Georgia P) Online resources: Include the web addresses (URL) if the teacher requests them. Place the URL in angled brackets at the end of the citation: Haws, Jeff. Eagles, Wildcats take to National Stage: Games are Precursors for State Tournament. Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
