Near fne - one tip bumped, and attractively printed. Near fne. [12187] $ Ammons, A.R. DIVERSIFICATIONS. NY: Norton, First edition. A lovely copy, with the front fap clipped at the bottom as usual, not affecting price, and only a tiny spot of glue affecting the binding. Signed by the poet on the half-title. Very minimal wear to tips of the dust jacket. Fine in near fne dust jacket. [3723] $ Armantrout, Rae. EXTREMITIES. Berkeley: The Figures, First Edition. Original wraps; 8vo. Bell taught for forty years at the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop, from which he was a graduate. His frst book won a Lamont Poetry Prize. This from the collection of Burt Britton. Near fne. [12160] $75.00 An exceptional association copy 7. Berryman, John. BERRYMAN'S SONNETS. NY: Farrar, Straus, & Giroux, First Edition. Presentation copy to Catherine Carver: "To Catharine w.love & love new and old John, 5/May/ '67." Michael Millgate in his obituary for the INDEPENDENT called Carver "the greatest publishers' editor of her time, and surely the best loved". Carver's career in publishing began in 1945, she worked with Leon Edel (his James biographies), Richard Ellmann (his Joyce and Wilde biographies), Lionel Trilling, Tillie Olson, Hannah Arendt, Leslie Fiedler, Saul Bellow, Flannery O'Connor, Bernard Malamud, Katharine Anne Porter, Peter Matthiessen and many poets including Berryman, Bishop, and Cummings. She was very close to Berryman as a friend and editor, and there is a long correspondence between the two; she published Berryman's HOMAGE TO MISTRESS BRADSTREET at the beginning of both their careers while at Partisan Review, and helped shepherd THE DREAM SONGS into hardcover, including mending a feud between the publisher Giroux and the poet. The book consists of 115 sonnets mostly written and rewritten in 1947, according to Charles Thornbury, the editor of his Collected Poems, two decades before they were published, about an illicit love affair with "Lise" (his notebook displayed at an exhibit at the University of MN in 1990, is entitled "Sonnets to Chris" and dated May-July 1947). In mostly strict Petrarchian form his diction is distinctly his own. Although these poems are not related to his Dream Songs, there is a prefatory poem in the persona of Mr. Bones. Fine copy in a bright and complete dust jacket, with a very short closed tear and trace wear. An exceptional association copy. [12237] $1,750.00

With its rural setting, and preoccupation with young men and death and the devastation brought on by WW I, Housman's lyrical poems, including: "When I was one-and twenty", "From far, from eve and morning", and "To an Athlete Dying Young", which were stylistically dated even when published, struck a chord with the public and with soldiers; and were reprinted often. In defense of her poems she said "I believe when humans can be so close together to become one fesh, or spirit, they transcend the human into the divine", which refects her interest in Zen Buddhism, evident in the cover illustration. Lenore Kandel spoke at the Human Be-In in Golden Gate Park, January 14, 1967 (her birthday), which helped launch the Summer of Love. Kandel is one of the essential poets of the Beat Generation, but after a motorcycle accident in 1970, she all but disappeared; she died in Her frst three books were published while she was in NYC, but in 1960 she moved to San Francisco where she lived with Lew Welch and Gary Snyder. Translations by Liddy of an Ossian poem composed according to the auther in the mid-18th century, and not published for a hundred years. N.p.: American Fruit Growers, 1922 (?). First Separate Edition. Plain beige stapled wrappers; thin 4to. A poem by Lindsay reprinted from the Century magazine, August, 1921, with "The Rodin of American poetry", by Glenn Frank from the same issue. Likely the original envelope, now separated, included. Staples rusty, else very good. Very scarce. [12169] $ Lindsay, Vachel. LITANY OF WASHINGTON STREET. N.p.: Privately Printed, [1927]. First Edition. Stapled brochure; 8vo.; 9 pp., in a contemporary Gaylord Photomount Pamphlet Binder. Signed by the author; number 34. "Of this brochure ffty-fve copies have been printed for private distribution by the author." With the bookplate of W. D. Vincent, his friend and banker in Spokane. The pamphlet taped at the back into the binder as designed by the library supplier. An essay on George Washington as our "Great Red Indian Chief, White Horse". Some aging, offset from the bookplate and Gaylord ticket, but very good (though technically I suppose ex-lib the binder did its job) with no wear. Quite scarce. The same title (with the addition of "The") was used for a book of prose published six years later, after he had moved back to Springfeld, IL from Spokane. [12164] $ Lindsay, Vachel. OUR LITTLE NEW CAVE-MAN. Spokane, WA: Published by the author, First Edition. Illustrated Broadside; 8 1/2 x 18 1/2 in.; birth announcement for the poet's second child Nicholas Cave Lindsay, born September 16, One large illustration covering nearly a third of the sheet, and six smaller ones, one of which is colored in gold and red and serves as the initial letter "O". The announcement in verse begins: "The only son/ Of the only son/ May yet be hard to break". All of Lindsay's creative ability is here: the art, music, poetry and for that matter child. Folded four times, including an unfortunate fold lengthwise along the right edge, with a bit of light but uneven toning. Quite scarce nevertheless, with fve copies listed on WorldCat. [12168] $ Lindsay, Vachel. [Poster describing the designs and verses of "The Queen of Bubbles" and "The map of the universe"]. Spokane, WA: Published by the author, First Edition. Illustrated broadside, signed and numbered; very large at approx. 32 x 28 inches. One of 500 copies. One half of the sheet has a large illustration surrounded by hieroglyphics, and labeled: "A map of the universe issued in This map is one beginning of the golden book of Springfeld." This was privately printed in THE TRAMPS EXCUSE in 1909". The other half within Lindsay's illustration is the poem "The Queen of Bubbles", his frst published work, in "THE CRITIC in Lindsay goes on to explain his map in detail: "The map has dominated all my verses since". The poem "The Amaranth - That will come to this city", is also included. Printed on Artesian Linden Ledger paper. Folded three times, with

11 AlexanderRareBooks.com (802) p. 19 several pinholes (The author begins "All my true friends are petitioned to pin..."), and tears at edges and some wear including a three-inch tear not affecting any text or design. Considering the size and fragile paper still about very good. An attractive and illuminating piece. Despite the fairly large limitation, rare, with only the Huntington Library and UVA seeming to hold copies. [12170] $ McHugh, Heather. DANGERS. Boston: Houghton Miffin, First edition. Her frst book in the somewhat uncommon hardcover issue. A Review copy with slip and card laid in. The poet's selected poems Hinge & Sign was a fnalist for the National Book Award, and was named a "Notable Book of the Year" by the NYT Book Review. Spine a bit faded and creased. Near fne in near fne dust jacket. [3845] $ McNair, Wesley. Fire Poems. Jaffrey, NH: Godine, First edition. Trade paper original. Inscribed by the poet on the title page. Chapbook printed by William Ferguson of Cambridge; Japanese papers and Bokuryu paper dust jacket with pasted on title. A lovely presentation of an essay by the poet previously published in 1916 in The Egoist. No. 237 of 300 copies. Fine copy. [12141] $ Moore, Marianne. THE COMPLETE POEMS. NY: Macmillan/Viking, First edition. Navy and light blue cloth in dust jacket. The frst issue with misspellings including "fowrrs" on p. 65; published 15, November 1967, the poet's 80th birthday. The poet on an otherwise blank page following the dedication page writes: "Omissions are not accidents". An interesting statement given that many of these poems, including her famous "Poetry" ("I, too, dislike it.") are here revised (a longer, earlier version is in the fairly extensive and useful notes to the poems), and the "complete poems" is in fact quite incomplete with only 120 versions (plus some translations from La Fontaine). An interesting collection, the poems as she wished them to be read by future generations. Overall a near fne copy with a few rust spots on the cloth edges; the dust jacket is very lightly spine-faded, not price-clipped, and else near fne. Abbott A32.a1. Near fne in near fne dust jacket. NY: Viking Press, First Edition. Blue cloth in dust jacket. 171 pp., Index. Essays on Eliot, Auden, Stevens, Pound, Williams, Cummings, the dancer Anna Pavlova and others. Offsetting, otherwise about fne in an edgeworn dust jacket with two half inch mostly closed tears. The offsetting to the dust jacket front fap and endpapers caused by the "Women Today" article in the Christian Science Monitor which shows two photos of Ms. Moore: "perhaps our best dressed poet". The article describes her Ben Reig and Anthony Blotta dresses as well as of course her hats. Well worth the price of the offsetting. Near fne in very good + dust jacket. [12144] $ Moore, Marianne. WHAT ARE YEARS. NY: Macmillan, First Edition. Blue cloth in dust jacket; 8vo. 54 pp., including notes. Somewhat uncommon: the bibliographer reports 1251 sold, and the book went out-of-print within the year. Nevertheless, among the poems are favorites like "He 'Digesteth Harde Yron'", "The Pangolin" and the title poem. Sunned at extremities, end papers lightly toned as usual; nicer than usual copy, with a note in pencil of four poems not in "Collected"; in a clipped (front fap, top and bottom) dust jacket, with the price still present, worn with small loss at corners, still close to very good. Abbott A6.[12140] $75.00

He spent most of his career in Boston where as a neuropsychiatrist his patients included Robert Lowell (and Lowell's mother) and (for many years) Robert Frost. It was Moore who introduced Lowell to Tate (Lowell literally camped out in Tate's yard), and was instrumental in Lowell's transfer to Kenyon College (following Ransom from Vanderbilt), after he took a leave of absence from Harvard. Each had more than 100 of their short stories published in the New Yorker. (Only John O'Hara published more stories in the New Yorker than Updike and Cheever.) Cheever in his journals after being told erroneously that Updike had died wrote: "As for John, he was a man I so esteemed as a colleague and so loved as a friend that his loss is indescribable.
