1 Denton High School Library Newsletter March 2013 VOL. #1 ISSUE #3 will be here before you know it. Once again Golden Triangle Mall will be the site. You can find it in the Sears wing across from American Eagle. All types of books for children, young adults, and adults will be on sale. Most paperbacks go for 50 cents, hardbacks are usually $1, and all books are less than $2. Teachers are also invited to pick out free books on Saturday, March 24. Be sure to have your staff ID with you. Book Cents sale soon! Admission is $5 for individual or $10 for family on Thursday night when all the best titles will be available. Friday through Sunday admission is free. Hours are 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday; and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday. All proceeds benefit the Denton ISD school libraries, Denton Public School Foundation, and the Denton Community Council of PTAs. Please come on by and help our library get funds for books. Like to go book shopping? You re in luck because the annual Book Cents sale is just around the corner. The sale, which takes place March 21-24, Coffee for staff is served every morning in the library for the low price of 25 per cup! 2 Who is in the library?! Carolyn Bason Librarian Being a librarian was always a dream of Carolyn Bason s. And now she is fulfilling that dream as one of two DHS librarians. In her ten years at DHS, Mrs. Bason has spent a great deal of time reading and sharingya literature as well as her personal favorite science fiction. I find the best books are those that stretch your imagination and take you places you d never be able to go otherwise, she said. As a youngster growing up in a reading family, she spent hours at the Lewisville Public Library in the basement of an old church. I read everything the librarian would let me check out, and some things I know I wasn t supposed to! After graduating from Lewisville High School, Mrs. Bason attended Texas Woman s University where she received her BS degree in journalism. She acquired her Master of Journalism degree at North Texas State University and her library resources endorsement from TWU. In her 36 years in education Mrs. Bason has taught journalism at PSJA High School, in the Rio Grande Valley, and Lewisville High School. She became a librarian just in time to open Briarhill Middle School in the Lewisville ISD. She came to DHS in When she s not reading, the librarian enjoys sewing, gardening, watching old Star Trek and Twilight Zone episodes, and spending time with her three granddaughters. 3 Genre Blurb Historical fiction is a novel that takes place at some point in the past. Many involve fictionalized versions of real historical figures or events. These books can be a great segue to get kids interested in history, putting important historical events into an engaging context that kids can relate to. While textbooks are commonly dry and dull, filled only with facts and figures that quickly get expelled from the brain, historical fiction can give a sense of time and place that has real staying power. These books can give readers a glimpse into the emotions, priorities, and motivations of people during different time periods, lending a better understanding of common social norms and important political events. Having students read wellresearched historical novels alongside traditional classroom instruction can bring history alive in a new and engaging way. There are a slew of wonderfully written historical novels. The Book Thief by Mark Zusak explores the life of an adopted girl during WWII Germany, and is possibly one of the best historical fiction novels written to date. Carolyn Meyer writes a series based on the lives of different queens, including Marie Antoinette and Anne Boleyn. For those who want a more action packed Pride and Prejudice, Wrapped by Jennifer Bradbury is an excellent find.
