1 HATCHET: SURVIVING THE ELEMENTS PROJECT PART 1 DUE DATE: PART 2 DUE DATE: Just as Brian survived against great odds, you will choose a real-life survivor (or group of survivors) who faced similar challenges and made it back alive. My survivor is: There are TWO parts to this project. The first portion is a written report retelling the story of the survivor(s) and the second part will be a choice of a creative project. PART 1: Research and write a scholarly report about your survivor. Your paper must include the following: - Who is your survivor? - What (and when) was the incident that put them in danger? - What problems did they face and how did they survive? - What supplies or character traits did they have that helped them to survive? - How (and when) were they rescued? Your paper must also be in the correct format (- refer to Mr. Shatzman s style guide on Google Classroom): - Report should be at least 5 paragraphs (including an introduction and conclusion.) - Must have a bibliography/works cited page (3-5 sources) - Body of report must be double-spaced - Must have a title - Heading at top of paper (name, due date, assignment name) - Times New Roman, size 12 font PART 2: Choose one of the following creative projects that you will produce to expand on your research of your real-life survivor. Each project has its own assignment sheet and rubric that must followed. At the end of the Hatchet unit, you will present your survivor project to the class. PROJECT OPTIONS: 1. Create a safety guide/pamphlet that is written/created by your survivor that gives instructions of how someone else could survive the same situation that your survivor found himself or herself. 2. Record a video news report (including script) discussing the miraculous rescue of your survivor (and their tale of survival). Must be 3-5 minutes and include at least 2 interviews. 3. Write 3 diary entries as your survivor (1 page each) OR record 5 video diary entries (30 seconds 1 minute each) during the various stages of their experience. 4. Make a physical or digital photo album that includes pictures from your survivor s journey with a 3-5 sentence caption for each one detailing the experience in chronological order. 2 RUBRIC FOR SURVIVOR REPORT Name: Self-Evaluation (-2 points if not completed in scholarly way): Paper thoroughly answers all 5 prompts including supporting evidence and details. Multiple prompts and/or details are missing or incomplete. It is not evident that sufficient research was done. Score Reason: Formatting & Spelling Paper includes an introduction, conclusion, at least 5 paragraphs, and a bibliography. The format follows the Style Guide correctly and completely. 4 OPTION 2: VIDEO NEWS REPORT You are a newscaster. Record a video news report (including script) discussing the miraculous rescue of your survivor (and their tale of survival). Your project must be/have: minutes in length - A matching script (- refer to Mr. Shatzman s style guide on Google Classroom) which should include: o Who is the survivor o How long have they have been missing o How/where were they rescued o How they managed to survive until they were rescued. - Include an interview with your survivor and at least 1 additional interview with an expert, a member of the rescue team, and/or a close friend/family member of the survivor. - Video files must be shared in Google Classroom Script Script thoroughly answers all 4 descriptive prompts including supporting details and attention to thoughts and feelings of those involved in the rescue. 5 OPTION 3: DIARY ENTRIES Imagine you are your survivor. Write 3 diary entries (1 page each) OR record 5 video diary entries (30 second 1 minute each) describing the various stages of your (their) experience. 6 OPTION 4: Photo Album You have just survived this terrifying ordeal; what are you going to do next? Make a photo album of course! Create a physical or digital photo album that includes pictures from your survivor s journey with a 3-5 sentence caption for each one detailing your (the survivor s) experience in chronological order.
