- - Reading Workshop Structure Please note these structures are non-negotiable. They should be happening from the start of the year to the end of the year. The lesser amount of time refers to possible times for the beginning of the year and for lower grades. It is also important to note that these times are estimates and may change based on student needs and instruction. 1

Books used within Read Aloud with Accountable Talk and Mini-lessons Exact titles within the series are listed in the lessons where they are utilized for the teaching and learning. 5 Link to additional charts on Pinterest This link is provided for teachers to see optional charts that could be used with Kindergarteners during partnerships and reading workshop time. 3

Partner Power-Anchor Chart Sample Partner Power! Readers sit close to partner reading Readers stay with partner reading Readers have one book in the middle reading Readers act out characters Readers act out and gesture informational text Readers make a plan Readers or LOOK LISTEN SAY something back 4

This chart could be a timeline to 30 minutes with a moving clock or star as readers gain more minutes. It could also be a bar graph or pie chart that is filled in by numeric increments as readers gain more minutes. The important part is that minutes are being collected; expectations are increased, and charted so that readers see the expectation and understand the goals for their independent reading time. The challenge of increasing minuets across days will be impacted by number of books students have access to and classroom routines and procedures. It is recommended that kindergarten readers are close to 30 minutes daily by the end of the first or second unit of study. Readers Stretch Themselves to Read with Stamina and Focus Did we reach our reading minutes? 20 Minutes 15 Minutes 10 Minutes 5 Minutes 5

We Are Readers-Anchor Chart Sample We are Readers Readers choose books they want to read (icon) Readers build adventures in their minds on every page (icon) Readers care for books (icon) Readers match their voices to their reading jobs (icon) Readers keep their eyes, mind and body on their books (icon) Readers make a plan for their reading Readers point to one word or picture as they read 6

Sample Parent Letter Dear Parents: Your child will begin to work with books in many ways during reading workshop over the next couple weeks. During reading workshop your child will be exposed to many different types of books (Poetry, Fiction, Non-fiction, etc.). One type in particular are called emergent storybooks. These are books that have been read over and over that students learn to love and know by heart. They may not read the words exactly, however they are reading the story by using the words, pictures and the story as they remember it, in a narrative fashion. These are the guiding principles of our reading workshop at school: Readers (have time to) read books every day. Readers choose their own books. Readers take care of books. Readers respect each other s reading time. Readers talk about their books daily in genuine ways. Readers read and understand the story. Reading work happens everywhere. Please encourage your child to read books each night and vary the method: you reading to them, them reading with you, and them reading to you. Thank you for being a partner in your child s education and for your continued support! Sincerely, Your Classroom Teacher 7

Kindergarten Unit of Study Unit 1, Launching the Read Reading Workshop Class Checklist Name Readers read books turning page by page with imagination. Readers care for books. Readers change their voice volume to fit their reading job. Readers read every day and know ways to read for longer and longer stretches of time. Readers make a plan for books to read based on feelings or learning. Readers use pictures and think about what they already know to read and talk about stories and informational text. Readers pretend to be the characters or gesture teach informational reading. Readers read and sound like a grown-up storyteller (narrative) or scientist (informational). Readers make plans with partners and look at each other while saying something back. 8

Emergent Storybook Directions Select a core of 15 emergent story books Order multiple copies (4 or 5) of each book. Provide storage space for emergent story books within easy reach of students. Set your personal schedule for reading the books. Read the first book and reread the book four times over a two week period. You can start the new book the next day but each book should be read four times over two weeks. Do this until you have enough books for all students. Relax your schedule of the other new emergent storybooks over the rest of the year. Invite your students to read. 9
