1 Saint Joseph School Summer Reading List Dive into reading this summer to help prevent the summer slide. Each teacher has selected books that will help students maintain their reading skills, as well as preview lessons for the coming year. They have also provided you with tasks to complete while reading. Enjoy! 2 Rising PK3 The Foolish Tortoise by Eric Carle -Identify the Tortoise in the story -Can you name the characters in the story? Lola at the Library by Anna McQuinn -Identify things you can see in a library. -What are things you can do in a library? There Was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Shell by Lucille Colandro -Identify things the Old Lady swallowed. -Keep track of items we can see at a beach
3 Rising PK4 The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle Color half of an egg carton to look like a caterpillar. Name your caterpillar. What adventures did it go on during the summer. Have your mommy/daddy write your story. Bring it to school on the first day! Can I Play Too? by Mo Williams Draw a picture of your best friend. Talk about all the new friends you will meet when you go to school. The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister The Rainbow Fish did not want to share. How did he feel when the other fish did not want to play with him? How did he feel when he shared? Sharing is so much fun! Make something to share with your classmates on the first day of school. It can be a picture, a card, or anything you d like. Have Fun!!!
4 Rising Kindergarten Choose any Dr. Seuss book of your choice. Parents, read the book aloud to your child. Fill in the graphic organizer on the next page to help them remember the story. Then ask your child how they would redesign the book cover to emphasize what they thought was most important about the book. Use crayons, coloring pencils, markers and etc. to make the color interesting and eye catching. Repeat the above directions Repeat the above directions.
5 Kindergarten - Summer Reading 2017 Graphic Organizer for Book Cover Directions: As you read the story book(s) to your child jot down important information from the beginning, middle and end of the text. This might help them to better remember the story content and better illustrate the new cover. Please complete one for each book. Book Title: Beginning Middle End
6 Rising First Grade Lilly s Purple Plastic Purse by Kevin Henkes Students are to think about how Lilly acted in the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Talk to your parents about ways to wait your turn. Pick one book about friendship: My Best Friend by Pat Hutchins Big Dog, Little Dog by P.D. Eastman The Recess Queen by Alexis O Neil How to Be a Friend by Laurie Krasny Brown and Marc Brown What does the character(s) do to be a friend? Draw a picture or write a sentence about it. Bible Stories Children s Bible Pick your favorite How did the story show God s love? Draw a picture about your favorite part of the story.
7 Rising Second Grade Inch by inch by Leo Lionni Scavenger Hunt: students need to find objects in their home and record it on their worksheet. The activity worksheet provides an eight inch measuring strip students may cut off. Challenge: look for objects no one else will find! Alexander, who used to be rich last Sunday by Judith Viorst Macmillan Students will list all things they want to buy if they had $100 to spend. Challenge: students list different combinations of coins to make one dollar. An activity sheet is provided. 8 Rising Third Grade Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barrett Imagine you live in the town of Chewandswallow. What would your life be like when food starts falling from the sky? Would you stay or leave? Write a 1-2 paragraph reflection. The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales by Jon Scieszka Pick one story from the book and write a NEW ending! 1-2 paragraphs of juicy detail writing :) Nate the Great by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat Write your own detective story...with YOU as the detective! Be creative.
9 Rising Fourth Grade Title/Author of Book The BFG by Roald Dahl Song of the Trees by Mildred Taylor A Cricket in Times Square, by George Selden Write a sentence to describe each of the characters that the author lists at the beginning of the book (humans and giants) Describe your favorite dream; what happened? How did it make you feel? Make a picture which shows the inside of BFG s suitcase after the BFG has been dream-catching. Making connections: A good reader stops and thinks about their reading. As you read, keep the following Thinking About My Reading prompts. For each chapter, answer at least two of these prompts: - An important part - A funny part - Your favorite part - Connection: Text to self (reminds you of something that happened in your life - Text to text: Reminds you of another book - Text to world: Reminds you of happenings in the world - Text to media: Reminds you of something you saw/read on the internet, youtube, a movie Record in a reading journal (can be one you made!) Making connections: A good reader stops and thinks about their reading. As you read, keep the following Thinking About My Reading prompts. 12 Rising Seventh Grade Title/Author of Book Brotherhood by Anne Westwrick Students will write a total of 3 page long journal entries at different points in the novel telling the story from a character's points of view. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak Create your own test (with answers) about the Book Thief. War Horse by Michael Morpurgo Compare and contrast your life as a teenager to that of teenagers in 1914.
13 Rising Eighth Grade Black Ships Before Troy by Rosemary Sutcliff Students will write a total of 4 page long journal entries at different points in the novel telling the story from a character's points of view.
