4 THE BOCHEMCAL JOURNAL NOTES FOR CONTRBUTORS Papers submtted for publcaton n the Bochemcal Journal should be wrtten concsely. The sectons below concernng the preparaton of the typescrpt gve only general ndcatons. Authors are urged to consult the more detaled Suggestons to Authors, Chemcal Nomenclature and Abbrevatons, Symbols, Usages and Conventons, whch was publshed n May 1957 (Bochem. J. 1957, 66, 1); also Notes on Preparaton of llustratons, whch was publshed n January 1956 (Bochem. J. 1956, 62). Copes of these two pamphlets may be obtaned from the Edtoral Offce (Bochemcal Journal), The Lster nsttute, Chelsea Brdge Road, London, S.W. 1, prce ls. 6d. (Suggestons to Authors) and ls. (Notes on Preparaton of luustratons) post free. Strct observance of the requrements of the Bochemcal Journal wll shorten the perod between the recept of a paper and ts publcaton. Communcatons. Papers submtted for publcaton should be sent to the Secretary to the Edtoral Board (Bochemcal Joumal), The Lster nsttute of Preventve Medcne, Chelsea,Brdge Road, London, S.W. 1. Abstracts. Authors are requested to submt wth ther typescrpt an abstract sutable for ncluson n nternatonal Abstracts of Bologcal Scence8. Ths abstract wll not appear n the Bochemcal Journa but wll be edted before beng passed for publcaton n the Abstracts. The abstract should outlne as brefly as possble the results and defntve conclusons of the work submtted. Detals of methods are generally not requred. A paper of average length should be abstracted n about 100 words. The abstract should be typed n double spacng on a separate quarto sheet n the followng form: ttle; name(s) of author(s); Bochem. J. (space for year, volume and page reference); address (for reprnt applcatons); abstract. For example: The metabolsm ofshort-chan fatty acds n the sheep. 4. The pathway of proponate metabolsm n rumen epthelal tssue. R. J. Pennngton and T. M. Sutherland. Bochem. J. 1956, 63, (Rowett Research nsttute, Bucksburn, Aberdeenshre, Scotland)-(Abstract). Reprnts. Where at least one author of a paper s a member of the Bochemcal Socety, twenty-fve reprnts are suppled free of cost. An author may purchase addtonal reprnts f he notfes the Press on the approprate form mmedately the proof of the paper s receved. Communcatons about the purchase of reprnts should be addressed to the Unversty Press, Cambrdge. General. t s the polcy of the Bochemcal Journal to publsh papers n all felds of bochemstry-plant, anmal and mcrobologcalprovded that they descrbe results whch make a new and fundamental contrbuton to bochemcal knowledge, or that they descrbe methods applcable to bochemcal problems. Submsson of a paper to the Edtoral Board wll be held to mply that t reports unpublshed work, that t s not under consderaton for publcaton elsewhere, and that f accepted for the Bochemcal Journal t wll not be publshed elsewhere n the same form, ether n Englsh or n any other language, wthout the consent of the Edtoral Board. Contrbutors who resde abroad may nomnate somebody n Great Brtan who s wllng to correct the proofs of ther papers. Proofs are also sent to all authors resdng abroad, f necesary by armal, whether or not they have nomnated a proof reader p.t.o.
5 n Great Brtan; f these are returned mmedately, t wll normally be possble to ncorporate correctons n the fnal proof. The method of correctng proofs gven n B.S or B.S. 1219C (obtanable from the Brtsh Standards nsttuton) s preferred. Papers should be headed by an nformatve ttle, by the names of the authors and by the name and address of the Laboratory where the work was performed. Female authors should use one gven name and the surname, and male authors should use ntals and surname only. Descrptve materal about the author, e.g. Bet Memoral Fellow, or detals of fnancal support, should appear as a footnote on the frst page or, preferably, n the acknowledgements at the end of the paper. Typescrpts should bear the name and address of the person to whom the proof of the paper s to be sent, and should gve also a shortened verson of the ttle, not exceedng forty-fve letters and spaces n length, sutable for a runnng ttle n the publshed pages of the work. f a paper that has been returned to an author for revson s not resubmtted wthn sx months, t wll be deemed to be a new paper and the date of recept altered accordngly. A revsed paper contanng a sgnfcant amount of new materal wll also be redated. A paper should be wrtten only when a pece of work s rounded off. Prelmnary or abortve experments should not be descrbed. t would help the edtors f the author, when submttng a paper whch s part of a seres, would enclose reprnts of the mmedately precedng parts. Form of papers submtted for publcaton. Papers should be n double-spaced typng on sheets of unform sze wth wde margns. Top copes only should be submtted. The paper should be wrtten n Englsh. The onus of preparng a paper n a form sutable for sendng to press les n the frst place wth the author, who should frst consult the detaled Suggestons to Authors, Chemcal Nomenclature and Abbrevatons, Symbols, U8age8 and Conventons. Authors should also refer to a current ssue of the Joumal n order to make themselves famlar wth the typographcal conventons, use of crossheadngs, lay-out of tables, ctaton of references, etc. The need for edtoral revson of a badly prepared typescrpt wll lead to delay n publcaton. Papers on specalzed subjects should be presented so that they are ntellgble to the ordnary reader of the Journal. Suffcent nformaton should be ncluded to permt repetton of the expermental work. Generally, papers should be dvded clearly nto sectons, as follows: (a) ntroducton, contanng the reasons for dong the work; (b) Expermental methods: wth chemcal papers the expermental part may appear towards the end, but otherwse should follow the ntroducton; (c) Results: these should be gven concsely; the use of both tables and fgures to llustrate the same results wll only rarely be permtted; only llustratve protocols should be ncluded; (d) Dscusson: t s desrable that the presentaton of the results should be separated from the dscusson of ther sgnfcance; ths secton should be strctly lmted to dscusson, and should not recaptulate results; (e) a Summary, about 3 % of the length ofthe paper: the paragraphs of the Summary should be numbered; (f ) acknowledgements; (g) References. The arrangement suggested for sectons (b)-(d) s not bndng on authors; other ways of arrangement are sometmes more sutable. The Bochemcal Journal uses as a standard for spellng the Concse Oxford Dctonary of Current Englsh (Oxford: Clarendon Press). llustratons. Dagrams that do not conform wth the drectons gven n Notes on Preparaton of llustratonw may have to be redrawn by the Press and the expense charged to the author. Legends and captons should be wrtten so that the general meanng of each llustraton can be understood wthout reference to the text, and so that the exact expermental condtons used to obtan the results llustrated are made clear. llustratons requrng reproducton as half-tone plates should be avoded whenever possble. Photographs or drawngs of paper chromatograms, partcularly one-dmensonal, are not generally publshed. Tables. Tables should have headngs whch make ther general meanng comprehensble wthout reference to the text. Condtons specfc to the partcular experment should be stated. Reference to the text for general expermental methods s permssble provded that there s no ambguty. The unts n whch the results are expressed, e.g. g./100 ml., should be gven at the top of each column, and not repeated on each lne of the table. Tables should be typed on separate sheets and ther approxmate poston n the text ndcated. Words or numerals should be repeated on successve lnes: 'dtto' or ',,' are not to be used. Footnotes. These should be avoded n the text as far as possble.
