5 Biographical note Ian Fife Campbell Anstruther was born May 11, 1922, in England, but was raised in Argyll, Scotland. He was educated at Eton and at New College, Oxford. He served in the British Army Signal Corps during World War II and, later, joined the British Diplomatic Service and was stationed in Washington, DC. In 1956 he purchased the Barlavington estate in Sussex, which consisted of 3,000 acres of land. Four years later, he inherited an estate in South Kensington from his aunt. During this time, Anstruther began pursuing a career as a writer, focusing on 19th-century social and literary history. He became a benefactor for the London Library, where he did much of his research, and was elected a vice-president of the Library. In 2002, he became the eighth baronet of Balcaskie and the thirteenth baronet of Anstruther. 6 Scope and Contents note These papers document English author Ian Anstruther's work on his book Coventry Patmore's Angel: A Study of Coventry Patmore, His Wife Emily and "The Angel in the House" (1992). The book is about English poet Coventry Patmore ( ) and the impact of his popular poem, "The Angel in the House," on mid-19th century England. Written during the Victorian era, the poem became a catalyst for controversy regarding the role of women and was used by advocates of tradition, who were opposed to the then-nascent feminist movement.
