5 PREFACE The arrangement of this Selection may need a word of explanation. Rossetti wrote little prose, and that little, although distinguished, is by general consent not deeply important. The one extract, therefore, from Hand and Sou/, seemed to fall naturally at the end of the Selections from Rossetti, although published actually before most of the poems. With Morris, however, prose and verse marched side by side, particularly after about 1870, each equally important and typical of the author; a stricter chronological arrangement has therefore been observed in the Selections from Morris. For permission to reproduce such poems by Rossetti as are still in copyright acknowledgement is due to Messrs Ellis, 29 New Bond Street; for similar permission in respect of copyright works by Morris I am indebted to the Trustees of William Morris's Estate and Messrs Longmans, Green and Co.
