3 What is Narration? Those who homeschool the with a Classical or Charlotte Mason flair are familiar with daily narrations. Narration is an essential activity to reinforce critical thinking and literature analysis. A narration is a short summary of an assigned reading given orally by the student. Narrations serve two purposes. One, it helps the teacher determine the level of reading comprehension of the student. Two, it helps reading comprehension on the part of the student. The length of a narration is usually two to three thoughtful sentences. In my home, narration is a daily activity. Daily activities can lack a certain luster after some time. Narration was no exception and after sometime was in need a tune up. Adding some creativity to narration exercises enhances comprehension and engagement. Narration Help If your child is having trouble retelling the story it is acceptable to ask a few questions to help guide her. How did the story begin? What happened next? What did you think of that? Who is the story about? What did you learn from the story? What happened at the end of story? Fun with Narration This book will help you engage your child in the process of narration. Narration is not simply about relaying information but expressing that information. A child may express herself in many ways which will effectively show reading comprehension. Children have other ways of expressing the conceptions that fill them when they are duly fed. They play at history lessons, dress up, make tableaux, act scenes; or they have a stage, and their dolls act, while they paint the scenery and speak the speeches. There is no end to the modes of expression children find when there is anything in them to express (Vol. 1, p. 294). ~Charlotte Mason 1

4 20 Ways to Make Narration Fun 1. Draw a picture about the reading and explain it to the teacher. 2. Draw a character or person from the reading. Describe his or her personality and give examples. 3. Copy two quotations or passages from the reading. Tell why you picked them! 4. Create a banner or poster about the book. 5. Use clay to create something related to the reading. 6. Draw a character from the reading and write a short description. 7. If you were to give a test on the reading what three questions would you ask? 8. Create a short comic strip about what you read. 9. Write a letter from one character to another character in the reading. 10. Make a short puppet show out of a scene from the reading. 11. Act out a short skit based on the reading. 12. Write down two to three sentences about the reading. 13. Make scene from the book out of LEGOS. 14. Compare and contrast a character in the book to yourself. 15. 8 Cut out and paste on an empty oatmeal box or similar container if you don t have a jar handy! 6

9 Narration Flip Cards Supplies: 3x5 narration cards (beginning on page 8) scissors hole puncher book rings laminator Instructions: 1. Laminate the narration card pages and cut them out individually. 2. Organize into weekly sets. (Narration Set A, Narration Set B, Narration Set C, and Narration Set D.) 3. Use a hole puncher to create two holes on each side of the card. 4. Keeping the cards in order, slide onto book rings. Alternative option: Store in a 3x5 index card box and continually rotate through the weeks. 7

10 Monday Set A Draw a picture based on your reading. Present it to your teacher. Tuesday Set A Oral narration. Wednesday Set A Draw a picture of a character from your reading. Describe his or her personality citing evidence from the reading. 8

11 Thursday Set A Pick a quote from the reading and copy it. Explain what it means to you. Friday Set A Create a poster related to the reading. Monday Set B Using clay, create something or someone from your reading. 9

12 Tuesday Set B Oral narration. Wednesday Set B Describe the behavior of a character from your reading. How are you like or not like this character? Thursday Set B Draw the scene of the story. Describe. 10

13 Friday Set B If you were quizzing someone on the reading what three questions would you ask? Monday Set C Create a comic strip from today s reading. Tuesday Set C Write a letter from one character to a pen pal about what happened in today s reading. 11
