CSE 2015 Annual Meeting Philadelphia, PA May 16 18, 2015 SESSION 3.1: Preparing a Manuscript when English is a Second Language Identifying and Supporting Early Career Challenges of the ESL Author Presented by: Donald Samulack, PhD President, U.S. Operations Editage / Cactus Communications Dr. Eddy TM personifies the efforts of Editage to support authors with good publication practices. EDITAGE: Supporting Author Needs 2 What are the Early Career ESL Author Challenges English or Perish Fundamental challenges in English language expression Difficulty in quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing Asian PhD/MDs graduate at an earlier age than in the West Lack of mentorship presence Understanding research ethics and good publication practices By line bias Share of voice in the literature Avoiding pitfalls of predatory publishers and predatory author services 1
Quirks of the English Language You dno t don t have to be raelly really smrat smart to raed read tihs. this. In the Elgnsih English lugnagae language it deosn't doesn't mttaer matter in waht what oredr order the ltteers letters are in a wrod. word. The olny only iprmoatnt important tihng thing is taht that the frist first and lsat last ltteers letters are pneiostiod positioned in the rghit right pclae. place. The rset rest of the lrtetes letters can be jmulebd jumbled and you can sitll still raed read it wiuthot without porbelm. problem. Tihs This is bcuseae because the huamn human barin brain deos does not raed read ervey every lteter letter by istlef, itself, but lokos looks for sncetnene sentence and language luganagepatterns. petatnrs. Choosing the Right Training Platform (1 of 3) Total educational events done (up to Jan ) Number of researchers trained 15,000+ Countries where onsite workshops were South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, conducted China, and Turkey Number of countries where Editage has 23 conducted webinars Number of webinars conducted (up to Jan ) Workshops planned in Choosing the Right Training Platform (2 of 3) One size does not fit all Audience, age, culture, venue, and structure all play a role in impact For example: Webinar live attendance is very high in Japan, however in South Korea, webinar recordings are viewed with greater frequency In Person Training Young researchers one day hands on workshops Senior researchers 1 2 hour lectures Webinars more popular with single young researchers, and organized small group learning sessions Written Content Young researchers Q&A forums, infographics, blog posts, animation videos, online channels, and material in easily digestible portions Senior researchers heavier discussion based articles, lecture videos, interviews, and print channels 6 2
Choosing the Right Training Platform (3 of 3) In Japan, an ice breaker introduction activity, where participants can introduce themselves to those sitting next to them, lightens the atmosphere Change slides slowly (ESL learners may need to time to read carefully) Talk slowly (ESL learners may have difficulty with a foreign accent) Hand out all relevant written material at the beginning of the session In Japan and China, people are very punctual; start with important things first. In South Korea, participants may arrive late, and so delay important content Audience mixture with respect to seniority will dictate audience participation. If you intend on using content submitted in advance from audience participants (e.g., sample manuscripts), ensure that you set the expectation in advance. This does not work well in Japan! 7 GLOBAL PUBLICATION LANDSCAPE Research Output Tendencies Current and projected publication trends Data source: Royal Society of London, Knowledge, Networks, and Nations, 2011 GLOBAL PUBLICATION LANDSCAPE Research Output Tendencies (BRICK) Data source: Building Bricks, February 2013 (Thomson Reuters) Supplied by: Nicolas Stipp, Director of Business Development China, Thomson Reuters 3
Researcher/Editor Survey: The East West Divide Two sets of surveys were conducted by Editage Survey 1 Survey 2 Target audience Researchers from East Asia Editors of International Englishlanguage journals Language Distribution channels Translated into Japanese, Mandarin, and Korean for dissemination in each country Social media forums for researchers Workshops for academic researchers Academic societies and research universities Japanese science newspaper Editage website Disseminated in English Discussion groups for editors on LinkedIn and ResearchGate EASE and ALPSP listservs ALPSP blog s to journal contacts International journal editors and East Asian authors: two surveys. Learned Publishing, Volume 27, Number 1, January 2014, pp (13) The East West Divide: Response Rate Partial responses Complete responses Japanese authors Chinese authors Korean authors Journal editors Low response rate despite active outreach, but adequate representation from each population Only complete responses considered for analysis Total respondents: 326 East Asian authors, 54 journal editors International journal editors and East Asian authors: two surveys. Learned Publishing, Volume 27, Number 1, January 2014, pp (13) How Well Do Authors Understand Publication Ethics? How authors rate their understanding vs. how often journals encounter problems in these aspects Parameters: A Data fabrication and falsification; B Plagiarism; C Salami slicing; D Authorship criteria; E Ethical board approval for methods used; F Conflicts of interest disclosure; G Copyright transfer polices Authors Journals G Copyright F COI E IRB approval D Authorship C Salami slicing B Plagiarism A Data fabr Scores indicate the average rank assigned to each parameter on a 1 to 7 scale, where 7 = best understood aspect (for authors) or most problematic aspect (for editors) International journal editors and East Asian authors: two surveys. 5 Championing Good Publication Practices (1 of 2) 13 Championing Good Publication Practices (2 of 2) 14 Industry Collaborations to Support ESL Authors (1 of 2) 15 5
Industry Collaborations to Support ESL Authors (2 of 2) 16 Two Things That Keep Me Awake at Night (1 of 2) Share of Voice in the Literature What is it going to take to get a paper: Accepted Published Read (discoverability) Cited Getting a good paper in a good journal is going to be everincreasingly difficult What will institutions and the publishing community need to do to support this challenge? Predatory Practices The whole axis of publication now has elements of a predatory nature in the hands of unethical individuals: Editorial Board solicitation Peer Reviewer solicitation Manuscript solicitation Peer Review practices Predatory Author Services Authorship for sale Plagiarism Writing fraud Data fraud In 2 years time, an author will have a very hard time identifying ethical practices. 17 Two Things That Keep Me Awake at Night (2 of 2) Like almost everything in China, if you take one step back, the real story is very different Most Asian cultures are very serviceoriented in the way an individual conducts their daily business and scholarly career. It is very common to seek support to accomplish your career goals, given the time pressures and publication pressures at hand. Beall s list is not available in China (censorship of the WordPress platform). Hence, predatory practices flourish in China and other Asian countries. 18 6
