1 SRELS Journal of Information Management Vol. 48, No. 1, February 11, Paper H. p DESIDOC BULLETIN OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY: A BIBLIOMETRIC STUDY Kunwar P Singh 1 ; Aarti Jain 2 and Parveen Babbar 2 Research publications over a ten-year period from are analyzed to assess the trends in the publication patterns in DESIDOC Bulletin of Information Technology by library and information professionals. The data collected from the volumes is summarized in ten tables: volume wise distribution of contributors, authorship pattern of contributors, geographical distribution of contributors, institution wise, etc. This study reveals that total 145 articles were published in the 6 issues of the journal. Out of the 145 publications, 97 (66.9%) articles published by single author. The study also reveals that 128 items (88.28%) were contributed from India and rest 17 items (11.72%) were contributed from rest of the countries. KEYWORDS/DESCRIPTORS: Desidoc Bulletin, Library science journal, Bibliometric studies, Scientometric studies, citation study, DESIDOC. 1 INTRODUCTION The term Bibliometric was coined by Pritchard in 1969, and he defined that bibliometric is the application of mathematical and statistical methods for measuring quantitative and qualitative changes in collections of books, journals, and other publications. By using quantitative analysis it is possible to measure the scattering of articles to different journals and also make it possible to measure growth and obsolescence of literature in different subjects. The most used bibliometric methods such as citation analysis, bibliographic coupling, coward analysis and co-citation analysis can be used to map the knowledge structure and the use of literature. Bibliometric techniques have evolved over time and are continuing to do so. The counting of papers with attribution by country, by institution and by author, the counting of citations, to measure the impact of published work on the scientific community, etc. All of these techniques combine to give more detailed and more effective measurements. Recently, the new dimensions emerged in the growth and development in the area of bibliometrics such as webometrics, cybermetrics and interometrics. Webometrics can be defined as using of bibliometrics techniques in order to study the relationship of different sites on the World Wide Web. Such techniques may also be used to map out (called scientific mapping ) areas of the web that appear to be most useful or influential, based on the number of times they are hyperlinked to other websites. 2 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY The principal objective of the present study is to conduct a bibliometric study of the papers reported in the DESIDOC Bulletin of Information Technology from 1992 to 2 under the following objectives: 1 Lecturer, Department of Library and Information Science, University of Delhi, Delhi, INDIA. singhkp_1972@yahoo.co.in 2 MLISc students, Department of Library and Information Science, University of Delhi, Delhi, INDIA. Vol. 48, No.1, February 11 57
2 Kunwar; Aarti Jain; Parveen Babbar Year-wise productivity of literature; Productivity of authors and their ranking; Authorship pattern of contributors; Institutional-wise distribution of Indian contributors; Indian foreign contributors; Country-wise contributors; City-wise contributors; Institution-wise contributor; Gender-wise contributors; and Subject-wise/Year-wise distribution of contributors. 3 SCOPE AND COVERAGE The scope of the study is DESIDOC Bulletin of Information Technology. Defence Scientific Information and Documentation Center (DESIDOC), a prime national documentation center of Defence Research Development Organization (DRDO) has several activities related to information and documentation. One of the core activities of DESIDOC is to bring out the world-class scientific and technical publications covering current developments in the Indian defence R&D and information technology. The DESIDOC Bulletin of Information Technology is a well-known scholarly and refereed journal of library and information science and popularly known as DBIT. The frequency of journal is bi-monthly published from The journal highlights the applications of current information technology to library and information activities and services. It also covers R&D developments in the field of library and information science. The DESIDOC Bulletin a well-known LIS research journal with a special feature that almost every issue of the journal is brought out as a special issue on a topical subject under the guesteditorship of an expert in information science and technology. The bulletin is indexed in several well known LIS indexing and abstracting tools such as LISA, Library Literature, Information Science Abstracts, Indian Library and Information Science Abstracts, and Informed Librarian. The journal also has credit to be the first Indian Library and Information Science journal that is available electronically The journal has completed its 25 th year of continuous publication in December 3. 4 METHODOLOGY An independent study has been conducted in a systematic manner for presenting the bibliometric study. The following technique has been adopted in this study. The articles published in the DESIDOC Bulletin in Information and Technology was manually scanned and all needed data has been recorded on a data input sheet designed for the purpose. For presenting the data in graphic the MS-Excel was used. The collected data has been analyzed and presented in the following tables. 58 SRELS Jl. Info. Manage.
3 DESIDOC Bulletin of Information Technology No. of 5 LIMITATION 1. One issue of 1992, 3 issues of 1996 and all the issues 1995 which were not available, have been excluded; and 2. It is highest during 1997 with 25 items (17.24%) and lowest in 1993 with 3 items (2.7%). The average number of contribution in each volume is 14 items (%) Table 2: Authorship pattern of No. of Authors No. of % % % Vol. 48, No.1, February 11 59
4 Kunwar; Aarti Jain; Parveen Babbar No. of No. of Authors No. of % 3 6.9% % % % 145.% Authorship pattern of contributors No of Authors It is revealed from Table 2 that a total 145 articles were contributed by 128 authors in volumes of the journal. Out of the 145 articles, 97 (66.9%) articles were contributed by single authors. 31(21.38%) articles were contributed by two authors. (6.9%) articles were contributed by three authors. 4(2.67%), 2(1.38%) article, and 1(.69%) article were contributed by four author, six authors, and five authors respectively. 5 DESIDOC Bulletin of Information Technology No of Authorship Pattern of (Yearwise) One Two Three Four Five Six Year Out of the 145 contributed papers, 97 (66.9%) papers were contributed by single authors. Table 3 indicates that Vol.18 (1998) has the highest-18 (16.55%) number of articles contributed by single authors, similarly Vol. 14 (1993) has the minimum-1 (2.7%) article contributed by of single author. Vol. 16 & 22 (1996 and 2) have 6(.36%) articles each contributed by two authors, and Vol. 12 & 13 (1992 and 1993) have 1(2.7) article contributed by two authors. 6 No. of Kunwar; Aarti Jain; Parveen Babbar It is revealed from the Table 4 that out of the 145 contributed research papers, India alone has contributed 128 (88.28%) of the total contribution. The second most contributed country is USA with 9 (6.21%), and third position in terms of contribution of papers is UK with 4 (2.76%). As the DESIDOC Bulletin of Information Technology being an Indian publication, the highest numbers of contributed papers from India is understandable. Table 5: Year-wise Geographical Distribution of Year India USA UK Australia South Africa Total % % 1 6.9% % % % % % % % % Total % Yearwise Year-wise Geographical Distribution of of India USA UK Australia South Africa Year Table 5 depicts the geographical distribution of contributors in volumes of publication. The geographical distribution of contributors is not so balanced and more biased to India. The journal has limited coverage of the contributions from other countries. 62 SRELS Jl. Info. Manage.
