14 CHOOSE CREDIBLE AND RECENT SOURCES Databases like those in the Purdue Global Library or Google Scholar with peer reviewed sources Reputable news sites (NPR, New York Times) Sources with known authors, reputable publishers, cited sources Always verify information included in the source Avoid wikipedia.com and other questionable sources like personal blogs as sources in your paper Choose recent sources to ensure that information is not outdated (especially statistics)

22 CITING AN INTERVIEW If you conduct an interview and want to use the information in your essay, remember the following: Only cite the source in-text (no reference page citation because the source is not retrievable by the reader) Include the interviewee s first initial, last name, and full date of the interview in this format: (J. Smith, personal communication, May 5, 2016) Provide necessary information about the interview subject in the paragraph where you are citing information from that interview; what are the person s credentials and relevance to the topic?

24 MOST IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO REMEMBER APA addresses both the way your document looks (margins, title page, font size) and the citation style (in-text and references page) Citation placement in-text should ensure readers know where you are using borrowed information, whether that information is rephrased in your own words (paraphrased or summarized) OR directly quoted. Citations in-text should guide readers to the full citation on the references page (make sure names/titles match). Reference page citations should have required information to let readers know what type of source is being cited (newspaper article, web site, book, journal article) and help them be able to find the source.
25 WHAT GOES IN A REFERENCE PAGE CITATION? Author/organization lets audience know responsible party (credibility) Date of publication lets audience know the source is current Title of article, book, or web site Publishing information (such as the publishing company, the name of the journal and volume #, or the newspaper or magazine) Page numbers or retrieval/internet URL if relevant Example: Wilson, R. (1999). Colleges urged to better define academic integrity and to stress its importance. Chronicle of Higher Education, 46(8), A18. What unusual features do you notice about the citation style?
26 WHAT SHOULD I INCLUDE IN IN-TEXT CITATIONS? Requires two or three pieces of information: Author s last name Year Page or paragraph number (required for direct quotes only) (Thompson, 2007) (Thompson, 2007, p. 345) OR (Thompson, 2007, 4) A survey by the Census Bureau indicates that half of American households have a computer (Thompson, 2007). According to Thompson (2007), 50 percent of the population have computers (p. 345). 26
27 IN-TEXT CITATIONS WITH NO AUTHOR OR DATE Many sources do not have a cited author. Websites, for example, often use a CORPORATE AUTHOR (CDC, USDA). If no individual author is listed, cite by the CORPORATE AUTHOR (CDC, 2008) or if no corporate author is listed, by the title of the article or page you are using ( New Technologies in the Workplace, 2009). If you cannot find a date of publication, put n.d. in the citation: (CDC, n.d.) 27

37 CREATE AN APA STYLE CENTRAL ACCOUNT Go to the Research or Write tabs in APA Style Central. Select Write a New Paper or Add References to be prompted to create a free account. Once you have an account, go to Write and Start a new paper. Choose a Basic Paper template. Choose student assignment, which doesn t include an abstract or keywords. Enter a title, then you can choose add references or start writing. You will even get the option to watch a help video throughout the process.
