UNIT 5 DISCUSSION Include your thesis statement for an argument for change in your community or workplace, and identify at least three search terms you can use in the KU Library or an Internet search engine to find sources to support that thesis statement. Find one source using the search terms and evaluate its credibility based on the criteria covered in the learning activities. Create an APA 6 th edition citation for that source.

CHOOSE CREDIBLE AND RECENT SOURCES Databases like those in the Purdue Global Library or Google Scholar with peer reviewed sources Reputable news sites (NPR, New York Times) Sources with known authors, reputable publishers, cited sources Always verify information included in the source Avoid wikipedia.com and other questionable sources like personal blogs as sources in your paper Choose recent sources to ensure that information is not outdated (especially statistics)
DON T OVERWHELM YOURSELF WITH SCHOLARLY ARTICLES Begin with... Purdue Global Library: CQ Researcher Gale Virtual Reference Library ProQuest Newsstand Basic Google searches narrowed by date (use caution the first entries are not necessarily the most credible) Try Google Alerts to get s about new articles on your topic Avoid articles and books with technical or medical jargon that will be difficult to summarize in your own words: Specialized Purdue Global Library databases like Health Source Nursing and Academic Most online journals Some sources on Googlescholar.com
OTHER HELPFUL PURDUE GLOBAL LIBRARY DATABASES Academic Search Complete Business Source Complete DSM-5 (Psychology diagnostic manual) ERIC (education) Health Source: Consumer HeinOnline (law) GreenFILE (environment) Newspaper Source Proquest Criminal Justice Proquest Education 16
GOOGLE CHROME EXTENSIONS TO DETECT FAKE NEWS B.S. Detector (also alerts you to satire sites and clickbait this one worked consistently) Fake News Alert (created by New York Magazine journalist Brian Feldman) Fake News Monitor Simply add these extensions to your Google Chrome browser and you will be alerted if you visit a fake news site.
CREATING SEARCH TERMS Use research questions from unit 3 and thesis statements to create search terms Try shorter terms first, then combine phrases as needed Review PG Library Guides on searches Thesis: The San Antonio Youth Soccer League should abolish head shots because these put young players at risk of concussions. Possible search terms?

PRIMARY, SECONDARY, AND TERTIARY SOURCES Primary: original artifacts Secondary: interpretations and assessments Tertiary: overviews and indexes that consolidate Information from other sources Primary, secondary, or tertiary? 1. The Diary of Anne Frank 2. An encyclopedia entry on World War II 3. A biography of Winston Churchill 4. Franklin D. Roosevelt s Day of Infamy speech 5. A history book about the events leading to World War II 20
CITING AN INTERVIEW If you conduct an interview and want to use the information in your essay, remember the following: Only cite the source in-text (no reference page citation because the source is not retrievable by the reader) Include the interviewee s first initial, last name, and full date of the interview in this format: (J. Smith, personal communication, May 5, 2016) Provide necessary information about the interview subject in the paragraph where you are citing information from that interview; what are the person s credentials and relevance to the topic?
A PA C I TAT I O N B A S I C S U N I T 5
MOST IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO REMEMBER APA addresses both the way your document looks (margins, title page, font size) and the citation style (in-text and references page) Citation placement in-text should ensure readers know where you are using borrowed information, whether that information is rephrased in your own words (paraphrased or summarized) OR directly quoted. Citations in-text should guide readers to the full citation on the references page (make sure names/titles match). Reference page citations should have required information to let readers know what type of source is being cited (newspaper article, web site, book, journal article) and help them be able to find the source.
WHAT GOES IN A REFERENCE PAGE CITATION? Author/organization lets audience know responsible party (credibility) Date of publication lets audience know the source is current Title of article, book, or web site Publishing information (such as the publishing company, the name of the journal and volume #, or the newspaper or magazine) Page numbers or retrieval/internet URL if relevant Example: Wilson, R. (1999). Colleges urged to better define academic integrity and to stress its importance. Chronicle of Higher Education, 46(8), A18. What unusual features do you notice about the citation style?
WHAT SHOULD I INCLUDE IN IN-TEXT CITATIONS? Requires two or three pieces of information: Author s last name Year Page or paragraph number (required for direct quotes only) (Thompson, 2007) (Thompson, 2007, p. 345) OR (Thompson, 2007, 4) A survey by the Census Bureau indicates that half of American households have a computer (Thompson, 2007). According to Thompson (2007), 50 percent of the population have computers (p. 345). 26
IN-TEXT CITATIONS WITH NO AUTHOR OR DATE Many sources do not have a cited author. Websites, for example, often use a CORPORATE AUTHOR (CDC, USDA). If no individual author is listed, cite by the CORPORATE AUTHOR (CDC, 2008) or if no corporate author is listed, by the title of the article or page you are using ( New Technologies in the Workplace, 2009). If you cannot find a date of publication, put n.d. in the citation: (CDC, n.d.) 27
COMMON SOURCE TYPES Books Journal articles Magazine articles Newspaper articles Web sites Interviews Speeches CC0 Public Domain Remember, each source has a specific formatting style! 28
