Honors English IV Summer Reading Google Classroom Code: nbvnufk Welcome to Honors Engish IV! I am so glad you have chosen to challenge yourself this year. While it should go without saying, I want to be clear about something from the start. DO YOUR OWN WORK. ALL WORK SHOULD BE ORIGINAL. THINK FOR YOURSELF. WRITE FOR YOURSELF. DO IT YOURSELF. This means you do not work with a friend. You do not look at a friend s work as an example. You do not share your document via Google drive. You do not show your work to someone else as an example. You do not read/copy/take someone else s work off the internet or anywhere else. Read the book and do your own work. I hope this is clear. Work that is copied/plagiarized will receive a 0 and a referral to the office whether you were the provider of the work (knowingly or unknowingly) or the copier of the work. If you reference research, then you cite the source using MLA format. Happy reading! #1: REQUIRED NOVEL Cry, the Beloved Country by Alan Paton Before reading Cry, the Beloved Country, you need to read about the author (Alan Paton) and the system of apartheid in South Africa, which was the law in South Africa for many decades. After reading this background information, write a typed 500 word (minimum) introduction for the book explaining pertinent information about the author how and why the system of apartheid started as well as how it affected the native people of South Africa This essay should have in text/parenthetical citations with a works cited page. This essay will be turned in to turnitin.com the day we test over Cry, the Beloved Country. You will be tested over the required reading during the first full week of first semester. During Reading I recommend using a bookmarking strategy as you read. Directions for the bookmarking strategy will be posted on our Google Classroom for summer reading. Extra credit may be given for novels which are thoroughly bookmarked and turned in the day of the test. You will have to hand in the novel with notes, so you probably want to have your own copy. Extra credit is offered for bookmarking this novel. We will read Chinua Achebe s Things Fall Apart in class during first quarter and compare/contrast the two novels.
Cry, the Beloved Country Introduction Essay Evaluation Guidelines Ideas and Content (40%) Presents and analyzes the significance of information about the author Presents and analyzes the significance of information about the system of apartheid, its history, its creation, its short and long term effects Organization (20%) Essays should have a strong introduction that establishes context for the essay and clearly states the thesis statement. Essays should have transitions within and between paragraphs. Essays should have strong conclusions that provide closure and connects to the introduction. Conventions/Sentence Fluency (20%) Essays are proofread and edited with correct capitalization, spelling, punctuation, agreement, and sentence structure. Correct word usage and use of third person. MLA Format (20%) (*An essay without citations and/or works cited page will be a 0) Correct page format (heading, title, page numbers, size 12 Times New Roman font, 1 margins, double spaced) Correctly cited (in text or parenthetical citations) Correctly formatted and accurate works cited page
#2: INDIVIDUAL CHOICE I. Choose a book. FICTION Margaret Atwood Jane Austen Emily Bronte Daniel Defoe Ken Kesey Khaleed Hosseini Patricia McCormick Oscar Wilde The Handmaid s Tale Pride and Prejudice Wuthering Heights Robinson Crusoe One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest The Kite Runner Sold The Picture of Dorian Grey NONFICTION (For nonfiction options, instead of listing/describing characters in the journal, you will list examples/points of emphasis the author shares.) Jeff Deck and Benjamin D. Herson The Great Typo Hunt Nelson Mandela Long Walk to Freedom Wes Moore The Other Wes Moore Eric Schlosser Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All American Meal Jo Tatchell The Poet of Baghdad These fiction and nonfiction books contain mature content. Make the right choice for you based on what you are comfortable reading and analyzing. II. Choose your project format Dual Entry Journal or Online Discussion **OPTION 1 FOR CHOICE NOVEL: DUAL ENTRY JOURNAL A dual entry journal is one choice for the assignment over your novel of choice. See the handout which explains the guidelines for your dual entry journal. The journal must be typed as it will be turned in to turnitin.com on the first day of class. (See detailed directions and an exmaple.) Each novel varies in number of pages, number of chapters, and length of chapters, so dual entry reading journals will be graded based on the number of entries and the quality of each entry. Summaries for each entry must be at least 100 words. In order to earn an A, you must complete at least 12 entries including entry #1 and #12. In order to earn a B, you must complete at least 10 entries including entry #1 and #12. In order to earn a C, you must complete at least 9 entries including entry #1 and #12. *Completing 12 entries does not guarantee an A because the quality of each entry is just as important as the number of entries. me at mvielhauer@usd458.org or see me in room 116 if you have any questions.
OPTION 2 FOR CHOICE NOVEL: ONLINE DISCUSSION REQUIREMENTS (This is an alternative to the dual entry reading journal.) Step 1 Attend the informational meeting about voicethread.com. Be sure I have your address (school and personal). Listen to announcements for the day and time. Step 2 Go to voicethread.com and create your account by June 1st. Step 3 Choose your book from the reading list, and me which book you are reading so I can be sure there is a page for that book on voicethread.com. *Step 4 Author s Background and Historical Context A. Before reading your book of choice, you need to read about the author, the time period, and the culture in which/about which the novel was written. After reading this background information, explain in your own words how the author s life/experiences and the time period in which or about which it was written influenced the book. B. You should cite all sources you reference in answering this question. Step 5 Read the book. Step 6 Start original posts by July 1st. 10 original posts using 2 different formats must be posted by August 1st. Step 7 Once peers begin posting, you can start responding. You must add 10 response posts using 2 different formats by midnight on August 15th. *Step 8 Reflection A. After reading the novel and completing the journal, you need to explain what you can take away from the novel. If you are going to put the time in to read it, then ideally you should take something away from the novel. Be reflective. Think about the bigger picture of learning, life, your future, our world. This isn t meant to be fluff. When we personalize literature and take time to reflect, actual learning happens that is meaningful. B. Explain if you would recommend this novel. Should it stay on the summer reading list? Should it be changed to something we read as a class? Why or why not? Be analytical. Justify your opinion with reasoning, not just because you do/do not like it or it is good/bad. *Step 4 and Step 8 should be on one document. You will submit this document to turnitin.com on the first day of class.
EVALUATION CRITERIA FOR DUAL ENTRY JOURNAL (due the first day of class) Journal entries (40 points) 12 original entries Entries are complete with summary in your own words and at least two additional items Sources correctly cited in MLA format for entry #1 Quality of entries (60 points) Variety of formats used (character, illustrations, vocabulary, quotes, connections) Original thinking Don t just regurgitate the plot or what you read online about the book. Share YOUR thoughts, reactions, observations. Depth of thought Ask questions. Make predictions. Be critical. Make connections. Be reflective. Be analytical. EVALUATION CRITERIA FOR ONLINE DISCUSSION Quantity of posts (40 points) 10 original posts using at least two different formats (by Aug. 1) 10 response posts using at least two different formats (by midnight Aug 15th) Quality of posts (60 points) Variety of formats (voice, typed, video, image, etc.) You must use at least 2 different formats in your original and response posts. Original thinking Don t regurgitate the plot or what you read online about the book. Share YOUR thoughts, reactions, observations. (This is where bookmarking can really help you because you can refer back to the quick notes you made while reading.) Depth of thought Don t just summarize the story. Ask questions. Make predictions. Be critical. Make connections to other novels, movies, current events, historical events, personal experiences. #3 Method Test Prep I will be posting more specific directions about this requirement after students complete enrollment. You will need to log in to Career Cruising then go to the Method Test Prep section. You will need to take English and reading tests this summer as part of the ACT Prep that is necessary for college bound students. After completing the required sections, you will write a reflection addressing your strengths and weaknesses, setting a goal for improvement, and creating an action plan. Again, I will provide more instructions on Google Classroom after students are finished with enrollment. Be sure you know your log in information for Method Test Prep before you leave for summer.
HONORS ENGLISH IV DUAL ENTRY JOURNAL GUIDELINES Google Classroom Code: nbvnufk Over the summer, you will read a book of your choice from the list provided. While reading this book, you will keep a dual entry journal. Each page is divided into 2 columns. As you read, you make entries in the left hand column. When you finish the chapter(s), complete the right hand column. DUAL ENTRY JOURNALS MUST BE TYPED. THEY WILL BE SUBMITTED TO turnitin.com on the first day of class. I. Your journal must include this information at the beginning of the document: Your Name Vielhauer Honors English IV Summer 2018 Author(s), Title, year of publication, publishing company. II. Journal Entry #1 Before reading your book of choice, you need to read about the author, the time period, and the culture in which/about which the novel was written. After reading this background information, explain in your own words how the author s life/experiences and the time period in which or about which it was written influenced the book. You should cite all sources you reference in answering this question. II. Journal Entries #2 11 (Label each entry with the title of the book and the chapters or page numbers addressed.) A. Each entry must include the summary/prediction component. LEFT HAND COLUMN RIGHT HAND COLUMN Summary in your own words Prediction of what will happen in the next chapter/section (100 word min. and 200 word max.) of the book B. As you read each chapter or group of chapters, you will choose 2 of the following to record as a part of each entry. All of these must be used at least one time in the journal. LEFT HAND COLUMN RIGHT HAND COLUMN At least one direct quote with page # An explanation of the quote and why it is important Names & descriptions of new characters Questions about characters or the plot At least 5 words that are unknown to you, worth knowing, or used in unusual ways. Illustrate a scene, draw a map, or an organizational tree to show how people, places, events are related. List characters, events, issues that connect to current events or trends, personal experiences, books or movies. Why do you think the character is important? What do you predict this character s role will be? Possible answers Explain why you chose the words, define them, then use them in a sentence or draw/find a picture. Explain the significance of the scene or the relationships between the people, places, or events. Explain the connection and why it is meaningful. Did the author intend for the reader to have this connection? How does it affect you as the reader?
III. Journal Entry #12 (I am not putting a length requirement on this. Do not disappoint me.) A. See the sample dual entry below. It has more items than you are required to have, but you can see what the format and sample answers look like.
Sign the following statement and return this sheet to me on the due date, stapled to the back of your completed work.
