You Don t Look Like a Librarian by Janet Portiner Do you think of librarians as little old ladies with glasses and gray hair pulled back in a bun? I hope not! Librarians are no longer the stereotypical bun-wearing, shushing women of yesteryear, but one thing remains true: they are helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. Yes, librarians have changed through the years, but so have libraries. While it s true that we still offer a wide range of reading materials, libraries are no longer known as only being a building full of books. They are busy places with a new identity. They are community centers, offering free educational programs, children s discovery areas, entertainment and meeting spaces. They are research facilities, allowing patrons to search through subscription databases, genealogy resources and rare books not available online. They are technology hubs, creating places to search for a job, find temporary office space, write a paper, check out e-books or learn the value of collectibles. Beyond the digital media, the classes and all the freebies, libraries will always play an important part in every community by simply providing a safe place to go! 7
