Welcome to the school year at Orange Elementary. I am hoping that all of the students are excited to finally return to their freshly cleaned school, no longer dusted with ash, and ready to learn. I am Mrs. La Scalza, the librarian. I have been at Orange Elementary since the first year it opened, in 2002, as my son entered kindergarten. I volunteered in the classroom, served as PTA vice president and chaired Meet the Masters program. Then, when my daughter started school, I started subbing in the front office as a clerk and a few years later became the librarian. I love our Library and it is my priority to see that all our students have an interest in reading, set and accomplish goals and make sure that the library is a space in our school that students love too. I will be updating our home page often and I encourage any input or questions that you may have. I am looking forward to another great school year. Mrs. La Scalza (951) mlascalza@cnusd.k12.ca.us Here s what s happening this month: 8-22 to 8-24 Students will be checking out their text books to 8-31 Students will be checking out their library books. Please make sure that your student has a safe place for the books that they bring home. When students are through with their reading assignments and homework, encourage them to place books in their back packs. Be careful with the water or juice though, if caps are not on tight the book will get damaged.

Students have been checking out library books for a couple of weeks now. Please make sure the library books that your child brings home are returned to class on or before their library day. If your child gets a notice in their communication folder or backpack, it s probably a reminder that their book is overdue a couple of weeks. If you get a damaged or lost book notice, please pay the fine with cash or a check. In the lower grades, if a student forgets to bring their book from home on their library day, I stamp the student s hand (with washable ink) to remind them to bring their library books back the next day. They are able to come to the library when their teacher allows or after school until 2:15 and check out their new books. The fine money will go to purchasing a new book and cataloging it into our library. Books can be checked out once and renewed twice. Their teacher and I want your child to be able to finish the books they choose and take AR tests on them. Keep in mind that another student may want the same book, especially if the book is in a series or it is very popular. We have 700+ students that share our library and not every book is always available. I do my best to make sure that each student has an opportunity to check out the books they are excited about. Mrs. La Scalza (951) mlascalza@cnusd.k12.ca.us

Here s what s Happening in October This month, in the Library, I am featuring a Quivering Cozy Corner. Teachers will choose 4 students each week, who can check-out Halloween, Mystery, Ghostly or Spooky books that are AR levelled. Students who are chosen will be able to sit in the bean bag chairs and read with flashlights during their scheduled library times. Other spooktacular book series that can be found in our library are: Goosebumps Shadow House Nancy Drew Mysteries Hardy Boys Mysteries Baily School Kids The Notebook of Doom Eerie Elementary

It s just a few more days until Orange Elementary will be off for Winter Break. Students will be allowed to bring their library books home over the break so that they can catch up on reading to make their January goals. Please make sure that your student keeps these books in their backpack when they are not reading them. Some students have checked out books that are a little higher than their levels so they can read them with you. I encourage you to do this so they are challenged and can enjoy a longer chapter book. May this holiday season bring your family peace, hope, and joy and prosperity in the new year.

There s snow better time to read a good book.

In the month of March, Orange Elementary and schools all over the nation will be: Celebratring Read Across America 2019 Building a Nation of Readers We will have an assembly with story teller, Jim Cogan on Tuesday March 5 th. Jim served as teacher and middle school head in both, Jim is an experienced actor, author-journalist, former Yosemite Park naturalist and strong advocate for coordinating S.E.L. and Character Education with core educational curricula. Jim's animated and always instructive stories from folklore, history and his own life experiences bring a positive, powerful message to all about love of language, diversity, character...and that wonderful human quality called RESPECT. Dress up as your favorite Dr. Seuss Character all week. We will be reading Dr. Seuss books in the library and in the classrooms.
