ESSAY Below, we have listed justifications for our cataloging decisions. We have only included justifications for situations that require cataloger s judgment or for other unusual circumstances. If no justification was necessary for a particular section, N/A is marked to indicate that a justification is not applicable. Record 1 Descriptive cataloging: In the 245 field a point of contention was subfield C. The group decided that the illustrator was most likely Vanessa Elizabeth Patrick from the OCLC authority record and thus cataloged her name with [sic] to indicate a spelling error by the publisher. This decision is reflected in the 700 field, which uses the authorized form of Vanessa Elizabeth Patrick. A note on the 300 field, subfield A. We interpreted 12 unnumbered pages of colored illustrations appearing between pages 249 and 250 to indicate 12 plates in the record s contents. This judgment informed the format of the subfield. Choice of access points and forms of headings: Access points: N/A. Library of Congress subject headings: N/A. Classification: Dewey Decimal Classification: N/A. Library of Congress Classification: N/A. Record 2 Descriptive cataloging: Area 1 There are two statements of responsibility in the 245 c separated by _;_ The first statement of responsibility is for the two authors (their names separated by a comma), and second statement is for the author of the introduction. Area 4 There are two 260 a subfields for this item because the first place of publication listed on the title page (London) is not in the country of cataloging. Therefore, we must first put London because it is listed on the title page first, and secondly, we put the first 12

place of publication listed on the title page that is in the country of cataloging (Boston). Area a lists the last numbered page in the book. Although there are preliminary pages in roman numerals, the Arabic numerals continue directly after the roman numerals, so the book only has one sequence of pages. Therefore only the very last page is recorded (Rule 2.5B5). Choice of access points and forms of headings: Access points: 100 field: Sanderson, W.J.H. (ARN ), also responsible for Abestos for surveyors. 700 field: Sullivan, Ralph J. (ARN ), also responsible for pollution aspects of arsenic. Library of Congress subject headings: This book requires two topical subject headings in the 650 fields. First, the most prominent subject of the book is asbestos and its environmental effects. We used the heading Asbestos and the topical subdivision Environmental aspects. Secondarily, the book is about school buildings. Since school buildings cannot be a topical subdivision, we could not add it to the subject string with Asbestos and Environmental aspects. Instead, we added a second heading for School buildings. These subject headings and subdivisions act together to convey the aboutness of this book. Classification: Dewey Decimal Classification: Environmental problems Pollution Pollutants Toxic chemicals Specific types of toxic chemicals Asbestos Library of Congress Classification: Environmental technology. Sanitary engineering--special environmental pollutants-- Other environmental pollutants, A-Z--Asbestos Record 3 Descriptive cataloging: The work contained 296 numbered pages, although there were an additional five pages of unnumbered text. Rather than list the true number of pages with text as 301, 296 was used in the 300 field according to AACR2 rules. 13

Choice of access points and forms of headings: Access points: Since the work was a collaborative effort of four people, there was no 100 main entry. The 700 field lists only the first listed contributor to the work. Library of Congress subject headings: N/A. Classification: Dewey Decimal Classification: Since the work was collaborative, the Cutter number was used deriving the title of the work rather than using the primary author listed on the work. Library of Congress Classification: N/A. Record 4 Descriptive cataloging: Area 1 Field 246 (varying form of the title) produces a note because the 1st Indicator value is 0. The decision on which to use this is based on whether the varying title is to be an access point or not. We decided that this varying title should not be an access point. The 2nd Indicator value "8" produces the Print Constant "Spine title:" for the note. Area 4 (260 field) includes the publication information. In 260 c, we have the copyright date for the item, as there is no publication date listed on the title page verso (Rule 1.4F7). Area 5 (300 field) includes the physical description of the item. 300 a lists the last numbered page in each sequence of the book. Only the very last page of each sequence is recorded (Rule 2.5B2). 300 c indicates the height of the book rounded up to the nearest centimeter. 300 e indicates that there is accompanying material. Here we have included information about the slides that are located in the pocket in the back of the book. Area 7 (5xx fields). There are a few 500 fields for this item. The first 500 field indicates that the book includes a topical index to the slides included with the item. The next 500 field mentions the accompanying material included, which are slides located in a back pocket of the book (Rule 2.7B11). The final 500 field is a note field generated from the 246 field, which lists the title of the work as recorded from the spine. Choice of access points and forms of headings: Access points: 100 field: Mitchell, Mary q (Mary Atkinson). (ARN: ), also responsible for editing Newtown authors, OCLC: This work is a collection of biographies of authors and illustrators in Newtown, CT. 14

Library of Congress subject headings: This book requires two topical subject headings in the 650 fields. Since this is a bibliography of book authors and illustrators, I decided the two most important subjects that describe the aboutness of this item are illustrators and authors. Therefore, I chose the topical Illustrators and the subdivision Bibliography for my first subject heading. For my second subject heading, I used the topical heading Authors, American as well as Bibliography for a subdivision. Classification: Dewey Decimal Classification: Bibliographies and catalogs of works on specific subjects The instructions say to "Add to base number 016 notation , e.g., bibliographies of computer programs and software [formerly also ], of general encyclopedic works , of philosophy 016.1, of novels , of general collected biographies " Therefore, we take the main concept of illustration and books: Graphic design, illustration, commercial art; Books and book jackets Adding this to our number for bibliography gives us: Next, we need to add the OCLC Dewey Cutter and we get our final DDC b M681 Library of Congress Classification: Z1023 corresponds to General bibliography--special classes of books--illustrated books. Record 5 Descriptive cataloging: Area 1 (245 field) includes title information and statement of responsibility. The title (245 a) is transcribed as seen on the title page with only the first word capitalized, as per Rule 1.1B1. There is one statement of responsibility, as indicated in 245 c, and is transcribed directly from the title page substitute (Rule 1.1F1). Part of the statement of responsibility Department of the Navy, Office of Retirement Affairs is also transposed to follow the title proper as per Rule 1.1F3. Area 4 (260 field) includes the publication information. No place of publication is stated, but the probable place of the publication is assumed with confidence given the nature of 15

the work, and is placed in brackets (Rule 1.4C6). Also, the publisher is not explicit. However, in corporate works, statements of responsibility and statements of publication often serve a dual purpose. So according to Rule 1.4D7, when in doubt about whether a named agency is a publisher or a manufacturer, treat it as a publisher. Finally, in 260 c, we have included the year 2010 from the cover in brackets as per Rule 1.4F6. This rule states that if the dates of publication or copyright date are not known, use the the date of printing in its place. Area 7 (5xx fields). There are several 500 fields for this item. For the first 500 field, we have indicated that the cover was used as the chief source of information for the title proper (Rule 2.7B3). Next, we indicated that this item is a revision of another work, as per Rule 2.7B7. We also included a 500 field to record the publication date, indicating the source of this information (Rule 2.7B9). The last 500 field is used to hold a number listed on the cover of the item. While this is not a standard number, we felt it might be useful for identification purposes and transcribed it as per Rule 2.7B19. And lastly, we have a 504 field to list the contents of this work. Choice of access points and forms of headings: Access points: 110 field: United States. b Dept. of the Navy (ARN: ). 700 field: Bascetta, Cynthia A., d (ARN: ), also responsible for Veterans Benefits Administration, progress encouraging, but challenges still remain. 700 field: Powers, Rod (ARN: ), also responsible for ASVAB for dummies. Library of Congress subject headings: We chose two subject headings for this item. The first was a subject added entry for the corporate name of the United States, with the subordinate unit Navy. We appended the form subdivision Handbooks, manuals, etc. because we felt that this work could best be described as a type of handbook. Also, handbook appears in the title proper of the item. The second subject heading we chose is in the 650 field. We chose the topical term Retired military personnel because the work appears to be geared toward individuals who have served in the military. We added the subdivision Employment because the item is about post-service employment opportunities. Then finally, the geographic subdivision United States is added to describe the probable locale for these jobs. Classification: Dewey Decimal Classification: Sea forces and warfare Naval life and resources Navy life The instructions say to Add to base number 359 the numbers following 355 in , e.g., uniforms So then go to 355 in the DCC schedules: Military science Military life and customs 16

Service periods, promotion and demotion, termination Termination of service The notes for this number say that it includes resignation and retirement, so this seems like a good fit. The final DDC number, with the OCLC cutter is: b U5818 Library of Congress Classification: UB443 corresponds to Military administration--retired military personnel--by region or country--united States. Record 6 Descriptive cataloging: Since the printing was explicitly part of a limited run, it was necessary to put "Limited printing copies" as a note in the 500 field. Choice of access points and forms of headings: Access points: The authority in the 100 field went the primary author listed first on the volume, Mary Ellen Matthews. Alec Ewald was added in the 700 field. Library of Congress subject headings: N/A. Classification: Both classification systems allowed for the topic of women s voting rights to be subdivided geographically. Since there were no specifics about location given in the information provided, it was deemed necessary to maintain classifications of the more general topic. Dewey Decimal Classification: N/A. Library of Congress Classification: N/A. 17

Record 7 Descriptive cataloging: Area 1 This is a multipart item, thus the title recorded in the 245 a field is the title for the whole set, Wilson s history of computer science, not the title given to each volume (that will be recorded in the 505 contents field). Area 4 For 260 c, we have the date of the item. Because this is a multipart item, of which 2 out of 3 volumes have been published, we can only put the earliest date of publishing with an open hyphen. We know that vol. 2 was published in 2004 and vol. 1 was published in Because we do not know when volume 3 will be published, we put (1.4F8). Area 5 Under 300 a, we put v. indicating that this is a multipart item that is not yet complete (1.5B5). After the v., we have information in parentheses regarding the specific pagination information that we have for volume 2 (2.5B20). This includes information on the pages of plates included in the volume (2.5B9). Area 7 We included a 500 field explaining to the catalog user that this is an unfinished multipart item. We recorded the titles for each individual volume of the multipart set in the 505 contents note field. We have recorded the information on the titles for volumes 1 and 2 because these volumes have been published. When volume 3 is published, we would append the 505 field with the title for volume 3. Area 8 We included two ISBNs for this item in the 020 fields. One is the ISBN for the whole set of 3 volumes. The other ISBN is just for volume one. When more information is gathered about volume 2 and 3, these ISBNs may be added to the record at that time. Choice of access points and forms of headings: Access points: 700 field: Garfinkel, Simson (ARN ), also responsible for Practical UNIX security. Library of Congress subject headings: This book requires one topical subject heading in the 650 field. The main subject of the work is computer science, so Computer science is the subject heading. Because the work focuses on the history of computer science, we added the free-floating subdivision History. This one subject heading string conveys the aboutness of this multipart item. Classification: Dewey Decimal Classification: Computer science historical treatment facet. Library of Congress Classification: Mathematics--Instruments and machines--calculating machines--electronic computers. Computer science--history 18

Record 8 Descriptive cataloging: 245 subfield A is distinguished by an improper spelling. The was misspelled by the publisher, and thus we indicate as such with the inclusion of [sic]. Place of publication (260 subfield A) was determined by contextual reference of the OCLC authority record for WTKR-TV. As the place of publication is not explicitly stated on the record, we indicated the place with brackets. Importantly, WTKR-TV was added as a corporate name (710), as it had a gross influence on the creative content and manufacture of the record. Choice of access points and forms of headings: Access points: N/A. Library of Congress subject headings: N/A. Classification: Dewey Decimal Classification: N/A. Library of Congress Classification: N/A. 19
