1 2015 Intermediate Brain Jigglers Summer Reading Options This summer you are required to read and complete an activity for two books. The activities will be presented at the beginning of school and should be turned in during the first full week of school. Completing the tasks successfully will also earn students a classroom economy bonus. The choices for activities are on the Book Report Menu 3 rd grade 4 th grade One fiction 80+ pages One nonfiction One fiction 150+ pages One nonfiction You may choose your own book, but here are some titles if you need them: Fiction The Hundred Dresses by Louis Slobodkin The Wonder Kid by George Harrar (80 pages) (256 pages) Bunnicula by Debora Howe, James Howe The Mouse with the Question Mark Tail by Richard Peck (128 pages) (224 pages) The Trouble with Chickens by A J.J. Tully Mystery Wonder by R. J. Palacio (144 pages) (315 pages) Frindle by Andrew Clements Holes by Louis Sachar (105 pages) (272 pages) James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl All Four Stars by Tara Dairman (160 pages) (304 pages) Fortunately the Milk by Neil Gaiman Gabriel Finley & the Raven s Riddle by George Hagen (114 pages) (384 pages) Nonfiction It is a good idea to look for a nonfiction book that matches the student s interest. This makes reading nonfiction text more valuable to the reader. The following books may be interesting: Buried Sunlight by Molly Bang, Penny Chisholm (this author has other nonfiction titles) (48 pages) Edward Hopper Paints His World by Robert Burleigh, Wendell Minor (40 pages) If A Mind Bending Way of Looking at Numbers by David Smith, Steve Adams (40 pages) Maps by Aleksandra and Daniel Mizielinska (this author has some other titles) (105 pages) Mesmerized: How Benjamin Franklin Solved a Mystery. by Mara Rockliff, Iacopo Bruno (48 pages) Nest is Noisy by Diana Hutts (this author has some other titles) (40 pages) Biographies, books about animals, or nature, books about machines..are other areas to explore For more ideas about what to read this summer check out the recommendations at:
2 Book Report Menu: Products for Multiple Intelligences For each book, choose a different product. Over the year, you must choose at least one from each column. Every product must include: Your name Title of the book Author of the book Verbal-Linguistic Visual-Spatial Kinesthetic-Auditory 1. Character Diary: Imagine you are one of the characters in the book. Write a few diary entries expressing your perspective and feelings. 4. Setting Research: Write a description of the setting (time and place). If it is a real place, find out historical information that helps us understand the story. 7. Plot: Outline a plot summary or a mountain diagram of the plot. Include: protagonist, antagonist, goal, conflict, rising action, climax (turning point), and resolution. 10. Found Poem: Look for vivid, expressive words, phrases, and sentences in the book. Select and arrange some as a poem. 2. Character Sketch: Make a poster illustrating a main character. Include quotes from the book that give clues to the character. 5. Setting Map: Draw a detailed map showing the locations of the main events. Label the places and their events. 8. Story Board: Retell the story in a series of 8 to 12 cartoon sketches with captions. Mount this on a poster. 11. Travel Brochure: Illustrate and advertise the world of your book in a brochure or a poster. 3. Character Impersonation: Dress up like a character from the book. Bring props, and use them to introduce yourself to us D Map Model: Construct a model out of clay, foam, or other material. Show the scenery or interior where an important event takes place. 9. Museum Exhibit: Make a display of pictures and real objects that bring the story to life. Label and arrange these on and in front of a folding display board. 12. Archeology: Create a model of a significant object in the book using any material. Make a label identifying the object, how it was used, and why it is important to the story.
3 Verbal-Linguistic Visual-Spatial Kinesthetic-Auditory 13. Parody: Write a parody of the book or one scene. A parody uses similar action but replaces the original characters with exaggerated, humorous ones. 16. Character Facebook Page: Create a profile of the character, with info, friends, pictures, posts, and comments. Minimum 15 items. 19. Reader s Theater: Select a scene and read it dramatically. Practice so you can read smoothly and with expression. 22. Newspaper: Write a short news story describing the major event in the book. Include an attention grabbing headline, ads, and teasers for the rest of the front page. 14. Children s Book: Retell the story in simplified form for a younger reader, with an illustration and one to three sentences on each page. 17. Slide Show: Make a PowerPoint slide show of the entire story or a significant scene. Include text and pictures. Consider using sounds and animations. 20. Puppets: Design cardboard or sewn puppets, or make costumes for dolls of the main characters. Identify who they are. 23. Time Line: Arrange the events of the story on a time line. Make the time line to scale. Include at least one illustration. 15. Video of a scene: Get some friends to help dramatize a scene from the book. Show the 2 to 5 minute video in class. 18. TV Commercial: Imagine that the book is being made into a movie or TV series. Make a video commercial introducing the highlights of the story and getting the viewers interested. 21. You Are There News: Create an on-scene news report about an event in the book. Interview witnesses. Perform this live or on video. 24. Song: Compose a song about the book, or take an existing song and rewrite the lyrics to fit your book. Perform the song live or on video or audio. Every product must include: Your name Title of the book Author of the book
4 Summer Math Review for Incoming Intermediate Students Get ready to discover mathematics all around you this summer! The Summer Math Review is for students to refresh and reinforce the skills necessary for success in their next math course. Math is a sequential and cumulative discipline. Each grade/course builds upon previous concepts with more complexity, more blending of skills, and more independent work. The problems in the reviews have been chosen to highlight key skills that you have learned and that you will be expected to know. Diverse and creative mathematics activities for students are provided in a calendar format. Each month s activities are organized into math days. You can choose which activities you d like to complete on which day. Students are encouraged to complete at least 20 math days each month. ***All work must be organized, labeled, legible, and attached to the corresponding calendar, and will be collected upon your return to school
5 1. Record the temperature for 5 days. Graph the results. 8. Find the perimeter and area of your front or back door. Record and explain. 15. John has $ John needs to buy two pens for $1.29 each. Estimate how much it will cost. Find the exact total & change. 22. Linda is going to have new flooring put in her bedroom. If her bedroom is 8 feet by 10 feet, how many square feet of flooring is needed? What is the perimeter of Linda s bedroom? Summer Math Activities for Students Entering 4th Grade June 2. 4 x 4 5 x 5 6 x 6 7 x 7 8 x 8 9 x 9 Name the pattern. 9. Draw a design that has symmetry. 16. In the number 75,643 what number is in the ones place? Hundreds place? Ten thousands place? 23. Ben has 6 square tiles. Each tile has a width of 8 inches. He lays the tiles down in a long row. What is the perimeter of the row of tiles? 3. What time is it now? What time will it be in 6 ½ hours? What time was it 15 minutes ago? 18 minutes ago? 10. Draw a picture that only uses geometric shapes. Identify as many shapes as possible. 17. If you get up at 7:30 and need to be at your friend s house at 8:15, how much time do you have to get ready if it takes you ten minutes to walk there? 24. Evan can paint 18 pots in one hour. His brother can paint 4 fewer pots per hour than he paints. How many pots can they paint in 3 hours, 30 minutes? *borrowed from Glastonbury Public Schools 4. If Mia painted 400 finger nails, how many people did she see? If the vet examined 26 dogs, how many paws did she see? 11. Get a canned food item. Record the diameter and circumference of the can in cm. (Hint: You may need a string for measuring the circumference) 18. Use a ruler to draw a 3 cm by 4 cm rectangle. Then find its perimeter. Now finds its area. Be sure to label your answers. Now find the area and perimeter of a square that has sides that are 5 inches long. 25. Make the largest and the smallest numbers you can using 4, 1, 7, 8, 5, and 2. Find their difference and their sum. 5. If the movie actually began at 7:05 and finished at 8:45, how much time elapsed? If you left home at 6:35 and returned at 9:05, how long were you out? 12. Find a graph in the newspaper or on the computer. Write 3 statements about the graph. 19. Use the numbers 4, 5, 3, and 2 and any operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) to create at least 10 story problems that all have different answers. Share them with a friend, sibling, or parent. 26. Grab a handful of marbles, candy or something similar. Estimate the weight in ounces. Weigh the objects you used and find the difference between your estimate and the actual weight. 6. Survey 10 people about their favorite ice cream or popsicle flavor. Create a pictograph to show the results. Remember to use a key. 13. Roll a die 25 times. Record the numbers that you roll each time. Which number came up the most? The least? What are the chances of rolling a 5? 20. A cantaloupe weighs 56 ounces. There are 16 ounces in a pound. How many pounds does the cantaloupe weigh? 27. Fill a sandwich bag with cereal. Estimate how many pieces are in the bag. Count to see how many there are. Find the difference between your estimate and the actual number. 7. With your parent make a list of items to get at the grocery store. Estimate the cost. Add up the cost after you buy them. Calculate the difference. 14. Draw 8 of the same triangle. Color ¼ of the triangles. How many should you have colored? 21. There are four cups in one quart and 4 quarts in a gallon. How many cups are there in 4 gallons of fruit punch? How many pints is this? 28. Three consecutive numbers have a sum of 30,000. What are the numbers? After you solve this problem, make up a similar one for a family member or friend to solve.
6 1. Measure your height in inches. How many cans of soup do you think it would take to equal your height? How can you find out if you are right. 8. If you called London, England at 8:00 p.m. Connecticut time. What time would it be in London? (Hint: London is 5 hours ahead) 15. Lisa has 4 boxes of crayons. Each box has 8 crayons. How many crayons in all? 22. Roll 4 dice together and multiply to find the product. Record the product. Do this 25 times. Summer Math Activities Students Entering 4 th Grade July 2. Add $ = Check your answer with subtraction. 9. Find a shoebox and measure the perimeter of the top of the box. If a stamp is 1 inch by 1 inch how many stamps would you need to make a border around the top? 16. How many hours did you sleep last night? Bedtime: Wake time: x 4 6 x 5 6 x 6 6 x 7 What clues help you? Skip count by 6s forward and backward. 3. What time is it now? What time will it be in 45 minutes? Record. 10. Is there a street parallel to your street? Look on a map and find 2 streets that are parallel and 2 streets that are perpendicular to each other. 17. Find out your height and/or weight. How many cans of soup would it take to equal your weight? Estimate and check. 24. I am thinking of an even number. It is greater than 7 x 6 and less than 6 x 10. It has a factor of 7. What numbers can I be? *borrowed from Glastonbury Public Schools 4. If you get up at 6:00 a.m. and need to be at a friend s house by 10:45 a.m. how much time has passed between the two times? 11. Finish the table. What s the rule? Input Output Find the perimeter of the front of a cereal box in cm. Can you draw a different shape with the same perimeter? Use a cm ruler. 25. Count the change an adult has this morning. Count the change an adult has this evening. What s the difference? 5. Use a ruler to draw a rectangle measuring 12 cm long and 4 cm wide. Find the area and perimeter. 12. Looking at a calendar, ask a friend to choose 4 days that form a square. Your friend should tell you only the sum of 4 dates and you determine the dates. 19.
