As you go through your holiday shopping keep in mind a great book you may have read or a DVD you may have borrowed. They make great gifts from your favorite book store. But the library is not just about books and DVDs. If you ve been to the library recently you ve realized that we are also focused on things to do. Monroe is a great town and so we are here to be the place to go for programs and events. Come in and check out our events board or see us monthly in TodaysShopper. And yet, sometimes, it just a nice place to read the newspaper or walk through the Garden. Speaking of which, we just had our fall clean up and winter prep of the garden. As John Pohler and his volunteers worked the grounds he offered this tidbit of information about two interesting plantings. Picture #1 is the hardy Japanese Banana Tree(Musa Basjoo). It is very cold hardy and adds a tropical feel to any garden. Although it does not bear any edible fruit, it can be a real conversational piece. Ours was planted in May 2014 at about a 1' tall. By the end of the season it was up about 5' and was producing side shoots from the root system. The plant does require sun to half sun, but no other real requirements. I did amend the soil with peat moss and a little fertilizer (organic). When the hard frost season is finished the only other winter preparation is to cut the foliage to the ground and cover with a thick layer of mulch. Remove mulch in late April to early May depending on weather conditions. The second picture is of the largest grass known and available for home gardeners. It is called the Peppermint Stick( Arondo Donax), and gets quite large in the garden. It was planted 3 years ago and gets larger every year. This year, with the flowers, the Peppermint stick is probably 18' to 20' tall. It does not require any special treatment but does suffer from frost damage in the spring and will die back to the ground. However the roots are strong and will produce culms that will make up for the loss. The culms should cut to the ground in spring to accommodate the new growth. I usually give it some organic fertilizer to give it a good start. 2 Friends of the Library Meeting Monday, November 3rd, 1:00PM The Friends of the Library group is a great way to get involved in your Library & your community. This month s meeting will focus on The Friends upcoming holiday events. Get in on the fun! The Friends of the Library are collecting used books for a future Book Sale. Free Film Series Beginners Monday, November 10th, 6:30PM (Directed by Mike Mills, Fiction, 2010, 105 minutes) Graphic designer Oliver meets free-spirited Anna shortly after his father has passed away, and realizes just how much of a beginner he is when it comes to long-lasting romantic love. Memories of his father, who, following the death of his wife of 45 years, came out of the closet at age 75 to live a full, energized and wonderfully tumultuous gay life, encourage Oliver to open himself up to the potential of a true relationship. 3 Creative Oxygen: Writing Group You want to write but don't! Wednesday, November 12th, 6:30-8:30PM This is a Creative Writing Group looking for fun, creative, artistic writers who find it hard to stay motivated to write. Join us as we encourage each other in maintaining a writing schedule with the goal of using writing as a tool of empowerment, healing and personal discovery. Calligraphy Drop-In Studio Thursday, November 13th, 6:30pm 8:30pm Create various projects using calligraphy & other artistic techniques. Blood Drive On the third Thursday of every month the American Red Cross will be conducting a blood drive in the Library Meeting Room. HORROR MOVIE NIGHT: Silence of the Lambs Tuesday, November 25th, 6:00PM RATED R, 1991 A young F.B.I. cadet must confide in an incarcerated and manipulative killer to receive his help on catching another serial killer who skins his victims (IMDB). This program is intended for adults ages 18 and up. Teens are welcome with permission slip signed and dated by parent or guardian. TEENS Please visit the Reference Desk for a permission slip. If you do not have a permission slip you may be asked to show ID at the door. Persons who are unable to provide either permission slip or ID, will not be allowed entry. The Bookmarks Tuesday, November 25th, 7:00PM Killing Kennedy by Bill O Reilly (Non-Fiction) Recounts the murder of JohnFitzgerald Kennedy and how gunshots on a Dallas afternoon not only killed a beloved president but also sent the nation into the cataclysmic division of the Vietnam War and its culture changing aftermath.

Warm up with the slow uninterrupted movements of Tai Chi, transitioning into a very gentle form of yoga which will help you relax and improve your well-being. This one hour program will run once a week over a six week period. Yoga mats are provided by the county for your use, we only ask that you bring a towel. Pre-registration is required.
