16 Definition of Databases Definition of Databases Databases are electronic indexes of articles, books, or information which can be searched with their own search engine; they cannot be accessed through a common search engine like Google
17 Types of Databases Databases can be classed as follows: SUBJECT: Focusing on a particular subject area such as History or English UNIQUE FORMAT TYPE: e.g. Journals or Books or Newspapers or Theses BIBLIOGRAPHIC: Citations only FULL TEXT: Citations plus full text
18 Search Strategy Tips Search Strategy Tips A search strategy is an information seeking plan so Determine what the keywords are Identify alternative terms for these keywords (if necessary) Refine the search (by date etc.) Use Boolean Searching, e.g. connect keywords with AND, OR, AND NOT and NEAR(or WITHIN) Literature and Yeats (retrieves documents containing both words) Poetry or Verse (retrieves documents containing either keyword useful when there are several common synonyms) Literature and not Poetry (excludes unwanted terms) Literature near 10 (or any number) Yeats (the two terms are required to occur within 10 words of each other)

Current staff and students are permitted to install a copy of the software on Institutionowned or operated machines EndNote can be used to store, manage, organise and format bibliographic references to be used in your research papers and publications EndNote classes take place on Mondays at 2pm and Fridays at 10am.
