Difference between Internet/WWW & the Library s Web site Internet/WWW: No people managing it, Unorganized and uncontrolled, Anybody can publish on the Internet, Often charge for money for academic articles and books, Many publications may NOT be authoritative & reliable, Very important to learn to evaluate the information you get from the Internet Library s Web site: Entrance to the organized information center, Library subscribes to books, ebooks, databases, and print/electronic articles, Library staff organizes and manages the site, CSUDH Library subscribes to 120,135 ejournals (99.5% of all journals), around 420,000 ebooks (42% of all books), plus lots print books and print journals, Information is all authoritative, Free for CSUDH students, faculty and staff. 4

5 Evaluating Web Pages: Questions to Consider 1. Accuracy. If your page lists the author and institution that published the page and provides a way of contacting him/her. (Know the distinction between an author and an Webmaster or Web site administrator). 2. Authority. If your page lists the author credentials and its domain preferred (.edu,.gov,.org, or.net). If the information presented in the document cited correctly in a bibliography or reference list. 3. Objectivity. If your page provides accurate information with limited advertising, and it is objective in presenting the information. (If page is a mask for advertising; if so information might be biased). 4. Currency. If your page is current and updated regularly (as stated on the page) and the links (if any) are also up-to-date. Adapted from Kapoun, Jim. Scholarly journal article vs. Non scholarly magazine articles: Scholarly journal : often referred to as peer reviewed or referred journals; Appearance: May contain graphs or charts, Will not find glossy pages or photographs; Audience: Scholars and students Authors: Scholars in the field of study; Sources cited in footnotes and/or bibliography; Report results of original research or experimentation. Non scholarly magazine: Appearance: Attractive Advertisements Heavily illustrated Glossy paper Audience: General; Some magazine articles include factual information; Author: Reporters, usually not experts on the subject; Sources not cited or cited informally; 7 Provide general information;

8 Topic Analysis: Identify the keywords Write topic as a sentence; Identify Keywords; Decide the Topic areas on which you want the articles to focus; Decide from which subject perspective you want to research on the topic. 8

10 7. Plagiarism What is plagiarism? - "The action or practice of taking someone else's work, idea, etc., and passing it off as one's own; literary theft." (source: Oxford English Dictionary) Instances of plagiarism include: Quoting or paraphrasing someone's work in your paper without citing it Expressing someone else's ideas as your own Plagiarism is a serious matter and could result in a lower or failing grade and even expulsion from the University. But I didn't know! - Ignorance of the law is, unfortunately, no excuse. You can commit plagiarism without meaning to, and, it's just as serious. How can I avoid it? giving credit where credit is due; always citing your sources. Whenever you insert a quotation, re-word information you got from a source or present an idea developed by someone else, be sure to include a citation in the proper style (MLA for this class). It is important to take detailed notes on where you are finding information for your paper as you find it. This helps to ensure you will cite the information correctly as you begin writing your paper.
