1 Information Literacy Nowadays there are many available resources to study Engineering, that is the reason why it is important to know how to use them to make sure the research is good and accurate. The tools, available at the libraries of the University of Tor Vergata, allow the customer to use many multidisciplinary resources of high quality. The evaluation of the resources, both on printout and on the web, could not be easy, but there are some elements which help to understand if some materials are more reliable than others. This tutorial has the aim to give the necessary skills to find reliable information about Engineering, thanks to the traditional and the electronic resources of the library of Tor Vergata.

2 Where to begin the bibliographic research Internet Library

3 Which are the resources to use? Primary resources: books, scientific magazines, encyclopaedia, etc. Secondary resources: catalogues, bibliographies, etc. Both of them can be found on: paper support electronic support (online, CDROM, DVD)

4 Which are the available research tools? To find bibliographic information the research tools are: Digital Library: to accede to the online publications of this University (online magazines, e-books, databases, DSpace). OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue): to find the material both on paper support and on electronic support on CDROM and DVD at the libraries of Tor Vergata. Further sources of scientific research (MetaOPAC, collective OPACs, open archives, etc.) from the libraries of the Univeristy, available on their own URL. Search engines.

5 Digital Library Tor Vergata The Digital Library gives detailed information about all the electronic resources available for the customer of the University and it assures a simple and direct access. There are about online magazines, 2200 e-books and more than 100 databases. For all the magazines of the Digital Library (library direct subscriptions, consortium-contracts Ciber-Caspur-Care, open access magazines) it is possible to accede to a full-text through the publisher sites or the Digital Library of Ciber-Caspur. In just few cases it is necessary a username/password (an icon appears next to the researched title, as a signal).

6 How to accede to the Digital Library from outside the University network The Digital Library databases and electronic magazines can be consulted from a private work space using an ISDN or ADSL connection, setting the proxy of the PC. The credentials to use are the University registration number and the password to enter the enrolment administration system. 12 What are the databases? Databases are organized collections of electronic information on CD-ROM or DVD or online, which can be consulted through a search engine. They contain a variety of information: articles, images, sound. The databases of a library are called bibliographic: They are structured in records divided into fields of research. The fields always present are: Author Title of the article or of the essay Bibliographic indication of the source In some databases there is the field abstract, a little summary of the article or of the essay, or the field full text.

13 Databases of the Digital Library of Engineering Faculty ISI Web of Knowledge: it s a platform which gives access to three multidisciplinary databases: Web of Science (WOS) It includes worldwide academic literature in the fields of sciences, social sciences, technology, arts and humanities. It includes also proceedings from international congresses, conferences and workshops. The material is indexeed from Journal of Citation Reports It gives an impartial tool for evalutating the major international research journals. It gives a prospective for journals evaluation and comparison based on citations colletion and cataloging. Medline It s a biomedic literature database of United States National Library of Medicine; it publishes research articles collected from thousand of medical magazines releated to every area of biomedic literature (medicine, nursing, rehab, dentistry ). Database access is free ad allows to consult article abstracts, magazines etc. The material is indexeed from 1950.

16 Web of Science (WOS) Gives the possibility of carring out searches using bibliography inclued in scientific articles. Allows to follow evolution of a study through citations of other authors. Evaluates the influence of a publication on a research area and so gives a correct evaluation of the publication itself and of the journal which has published it. Contents from:

18 Web of Science (WOS) Key idea is that citations are a very powerful tool for evaluating the prestige of a journal Regular search of WOS consists in retriving contents cited in a particular one. Doing the opposite is also possible(from a content to the ones who cite it). WOS is composed by three thematic areas: 1. Technical-scientific area (78%) 2. Social sciences (12%) 3. 19 Journals of Citation reports It allows to evaluate and to compare scientific publications using the analysis of specific parameters such as: Impact factor, Immediacy index, Cited half life, Eigenfactor These parameters are obtained by calculations made on citations indexees. 20 Immediacy Index Immediacy index is a measure of how quickly a magazine is cited after it has been published. It indicates the average value of received citations in the reporting year by other publications published in the same year. It is calculated by dividing the current number of received citations in the reporting year of a magazine by the number of articles published in the same year. Contents from:

21 Cited Half Life and Eigenfactor Cited Half Life measures the validity of the cited articles, and indicates for how many years articles from that magazine are still cited. Eigenfactor indicates the average number of received citations in the previous 5 year from the reporting year, weighted by topic area and importance of the citing magazine. Contents from:

22 Impact Factor (IF) It is the ratio of the number of received citations of the articles in a fixed timespan and number of the articles published in the same timespan. It indicates the average number of received citations during the reporting year by the articles published during the two previous years. The higer the IF is, the higer is the prestige of a magazine. 26 ART Institutional Archive of Research of University of Rome Tor Veragta. The archieve contains and gives access to pre-print, post-print, doctoral thesis, educational material, technical reports, working papers, conference reports, etc

30 OPAC It can be consulted from a library PC or from any Internet connection. It allows to research, to combine researches using the boolean operators, to obtain a precise answer through some links to the words of the research.

31 OPAC Tor Vergata From the OPAC there is the possibility to see all the documents of all the University libraries of a particular field of the Department. There are about books, 8000 magazines and 300 DVD for sound-video material. At the moment OPAC partially contains the items of the library of Information Engineering, but the whole collection can be consulted on the local catalogue:

39 Collective OPAC The collective catalogues gather all items of the libraries of different organizations. Examples: a) Archivio Collettivo Nazionale dei Periodici (ACNP) b) SBN, which can be consulted from the portal Internet Culturale; it allows to research among all the Italian libraries joining the Servizio Bibliotecario Italiano:

40 Example searc on ACNP IEEE proceedings Optoelectronics Example Description It is a big database which gathers information about magazines in the Italian libraries (in ACNP). A research on the catalogue allows to know a list of Italian libraries possessing a particular magazine and to know how many publications of that magazine are in the library. From this catalogue there is a link to the list of libraries in ACNP to take information about a library and a magazine (like, for example, address, services, opening times). The magazine catalogue is linked to the catalogue of articles with an abstract and to the catalogue of ISSN magazines, an international repertory, an index with titles of international magazines not necessarily in Italian libraries.

Date of publication and possible updatings.
