Please ask Mrs. Despines or Mrs. Rentschler for help if you need it. PRINT Use the USCHS resource catalog, DESTINY, to find books on your topics. Go to STUDENT LINKS (high school) and choose DESTINY. Make sure to write down the call numbers of the books you are interested in and bring the list to the library. ONLINE DATABASES- - - THE BEST, MOST RELIABLE SOURCES History Reference Center To access this database from school: From STUDENT LINKS, click onto History Reference Center. Make sure that the FULL TEXT box is clicked. Use the TIMELINE limiter feature to narrow your search, if needed. Look at the bibliographies at the end of articles for other possible sources. Use the CITE button on the right sidebar and then scroll for the MLA citation copy and paste! For home access, go to Student Links User Id: uschs Password: panther JSTOR: College- level research database; good for case studies & scientific studies From STUDENT LINKS, click the JSTOR link. Enter the Username: uschs and Password: panther Under the SEARCH tab at the top of the page, click ADVANCED SEARCH. 1

2 Click onto the include only content I can access box. If needed, narrow by item type, date range, & language. You can search through ALL DISCIPLINES, or pick individual subjects in the Narrow by by Discipline and/or Publication Title area. In order to scroll through and/or print an entire JSTOR article, you need to use the PDF browser print icon. From this page, click the VIEW PDF button. On this screen, click ACCEPT TO view PDF. Points of View: Articles show both sides of an issue; good for articles/documents, statistics, arguments, and some case studies To access this database from school and home: From STUDENT LINKS, click onto Points of View. User Id: uschs Password: panther Use the CITE button on the right side bar of article to document your sources. Scroll down to find MLA. POWER Library: MasterFILE Main Edition: Arguments, statistics, documents, scientific and/or case studies; This multidisciplinary e- resource is designed specifically for public libraries providing full text for over 1,700 reference resources, magazines, and journals covering general interest subject areas From STUDENT LINKS, click the POWER Library link. Find the LIST ALL link to the right of the BROWSE tab. Scroll down and click on the database that you want to search. Make sure the click on the FULL TEXT box. You can limit to PRIMARY SOURCES too in the PUBLICATION TYPE section. Type in your search and choose limiters. 2

3 To cite an article, click the CITE button on the right sidebar and then scroll down to the MA citation. Make sure to select FULL TEXT and SCHOLARLY (PEER REVIEWED) JOURNALS to get scholarly results. ü On the results page, you can view the article in HTML or PDF, if available. Use the Print, , Save, CITE buttons on the right side bar as necessary. ü Home access: Try from STUDENT LINKS, click onto the POWER Library link. If that doesn t work, go to the Township Library s web page o You will need the barcode number from your TOWNSHIP LIBRARY CARD! o On the right- hand side of the screen, click onto ONLINE DATABASES. Under General Reference, click Access PA POWER Library. o Follow the directions and enter the barcode number on your Township Library card. If you need to use your password, it is the last 4 digits of your phone number. o Then click onto the database that you want to use. Gale s Virtual Reference Online: ebooks- - Gale Virtual Reference Library is a database of encyclopedias and specialized reference sources for multidisciplinary research. From STUDENT LINKS, click onto the Gale s Virtual Reference Online. If prompted, type in the password panther and click PROCEED. Use the top search bar to search in ALL GVRO resources. Pick the book you want to use by clicking on the cover. You can use the search bar in the left sidebar or click through the table of contents listed. Once you get your results list, look at the left side bar for additional subject headings that can narrow or broaden your search. 3

4 To cite your sources, use the CITATION TOOLS at the top of the page, choose MLA. The citation given is NOT in proper MLA format! Use the MLA Green Sheet. Gale s Discovering Collection: General reference database From STUDENT LINKS, click onto the Gale s Discovering Collection. If prompted, type in the password panther and click PROCEED. Once you get your results list, look at the left side bar for additional subject headings that can narrow or broaden your search. The SOURCE CTITATION at the bottom of the article is NOT in MLA format! Use the MLA GREEN SHEET #17 to format a database article. Britannica Online School Edition: The Britannica Encyclopedia and a lot more! From STUDENT LINKS, click the Encyclopedia Britannica link. If needed, login: user I.D.: uschs password: panther Choose the HIGH (for high school level). Type in your search at the top of the page. On the results page, if needed, limit your search by content type on the left sidebar. On the article page, use the tabs and tools icons as needed. The CITE icon will give you the MLA citation to copy and paste- - - FOR ARTICLES ONLY. Use the GREEN SHEET to cite other content types. WEBSITES Try out GOOGLE SCHOLAR.com instead of just a google search. Remember to evaluate the results that you get from your search. Is the information from a credible source? Who is the author?
