2 Alan Twigg fonds m of textual records and other material Biographical Sketch: Alan Twigg was born in North Vancouver, British Columbia in Since 1987, he has owned and published the newspaper, B.C. BookWorld, Canada s largest circulation publication about books. In 1985, Twigg co-founded the B.C. Book Prizes, and he was its executive director and chief fundraiser in the 1990s. He also created the Van City Women s Book Prize, and coordinated it between 1992 and Twigg was a representative of the Writers Union of Canada, on the original Board of Directors for the Canadian Centre for Studies in Publishing at Simon Fraser University. He also served on the boards of the City of Vancouver s Public Art Committee and the Vancouver Cultural Alliance. He is a founder of British Columbia s annual Lifetime Achievement Award for an outstanding literary career in British Columbia, which he has also coordinated since In 1994, he organized events aiming to honor George Woodcock, who was British Columbia s most prolific man of letters. In the 1970s and 1980s, Alan Twigg worked as a freelance writer. From 1995 to 1998, he wrote a weekly editorial column for The Province newspaper. He has written for The Quill & Quire, BC Historical News, as a theatre critic for The Georgia Straight, Globe & Mail, Toronto Star, Ottawa Citizen, Maclean s, Vancouver Sun, Step and Pacific Northwest Review of Books. Alan Twigg appears frequently as a guest on CBC Radio, and he has been the host of a CBC television series about B.C. authors. Alan Twigg has taught at the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, University of Victoria, and at high schools. He hosted Simon Fraser University s third annual Symposium on the Novel at the Wosk Centre for Dialogue in In 1999, Twigg coordinated a fundraising campaign for the B.C. Civil Liberties Association, an organization which he continues to support. 2

6 Scope and Content: The fonds consist of materials that relate to Twigg s work as a writer, publisher and cofounder of the B.C. Arrangement: The fonds is arranged in 14 series in accordance with Twigg s arrangement. All efforts have been made to maintain the original order. However, it was necessary to give arrangement to some series which either did not possess it, or had only rudimentary arrangement. Where the files within the series were rearranged, a note explaining the arrangement has been included in the series level description. Finding Aids: Series and file descriptions are available. 6

7 Series 1: Correspondence cm of textual records and other material Series contains incoming and outgoing correspondence. Material includes personal and professional letters, post cards, fax and hard copies of . The materials have been arranged in accordance with Twigg s original file arrangement. Some files are devoted to correspondence with one person, and they were arranged alphabetically by Twigg. Other files have incoming and outgoing letters that include correspondence with more than one person. Those files have been grouped according to years, and activities. Series 2: Political Campaign and Poetry of Bud Osborn [199-] 1 cm of textual records and other material Series contains materials concerned with Bud Osborn s career as a social activist, a poet and a performer. Materials include newspaper clippings with handwritten notes on them, a manuscript, correspondence, ephemera, photographs, videocassette and audio cassettes. Note: Further accruals are expected. Series 3: Vancouver Theatre [19-] 10.3 cm of textual records and other material Series contains materials concerned with Vancouver Theatre. Materials include manuscripts of Twigg s plays, photographs from Vancouver Theatre performances, newspaper clippings with Twigg s Theatre reviews for Georgia Straight, Theatre programs, and transcripts of CBC Radio Afternoon Show. 8 Arrangement: Twigg gave very little arrangement to the series, and consequently the arrangement was imposed dividing the series into 5 files based on form. The original order was retained in CBC Radio Q&A Afternoon Show file. Note: Further accruals are expected. Series 4: Television Interviews 1994 and cm of textual records and other material Series contains taped television interviews, transcripts of television interviews and related materials including computer disks. Physical description: 1 proclamation, 12 computer disks, 1 audio cassette, 62 videocassettes Arrangement: Twigg s arrangement of transcripts of interviews into files was retained. The videocassettes were not arranged by Twigg into files, and consequently they are arranged into one file. Note: Further accruals are expected. Series 5: Twigg s Book Research m of textual records and other material Series contains materials concerned with Twigg s research for various books. Materials include drafts of literary works, transcripts of interview with Vander Zalm, correspondence, photographs, computer disks, newspaper clippings, handwritten and typed notes, newspapers, magazines and books. The drafts of 24 chapters of For Openers were arranged into one file. Similarly, drafts of chapters of Vander Zalm were arranged into one file. The original order of the notes and newspaper clippings pertaining to research on separate chapters of Vander Zalm was retained. All the remaining notes and newspaper clippings pertaining to research for Vander Zalm had to be arranged into one file. The remaining files were arranged based on form of the materials.
