2 INTRODUCTION PARAGRAPH FIRST paragraph in your essay Follow HAT acronym H- Hook the Reader Start with a catchy hook phrase that draws the reader in. A- Attack the topic What s the focus of your paper? Transition to your thesis. T- Thesis statement Simple, direct, focused sentence stating what you re essay is about. Check out The

3 Thesis Do s & Don ts DO Make it stand out like a nun in a mosh pit Treat it like a baby (take care of it) Put it at the end of your first paragraph Make it an argument Say, Apple s products are overrated. Say, The Black Panthers influenced Tupac s ideology. Keep it focused like a camera guy Make it tight like skinny jeans Take your time, scrub it down like Mr. Clean Make it legitimate Get specific Make it clear like a windshield DONT Don t make it so obvious Don t say, Apple is a company. Don t say, Tupac made some good hip-hop. Don t make it too large Don t make it supersized Don t mess your message up and misdeliver it, have people thinking you re illiterate Don t be vague Don t talk in the first person saying, I think this book is kind of worth it.

4 SAMPLE INTRO PARAGRAPH H A T Write a sample INTRODUCTION on the following Favorite childhood toy EXAMPLE: Hey now kids come gather round, see what just skipped into town. Sound enticing? To a six-year-old kid looking to have some fun, it was! Skip It was hands down, the best toy of the early 90 s. Skip It is amongst the greatest toy ever made because it was fun to play and it had a counter that kept track of your skips. Be sure to follow HAT H- Hook the Reader A- Attack the topic T- Thesis statement

5 BODY PARAGRAPHS BEEF of your essay (or in Mrs. Plant s case, the veggie patty ) Follow TAPES acronym T-Topic Sentence What is your paragraph about? A- Answer Questions Think about questions the reader may have and ANSWER THEM! P- Prove It Provide proof that supports your topic sentence E- Examples Use examples to explain your topic S- Summarize Sum it up to transition into the next paragraph

6 BODY PARAGRAPHS EXAMPLE (Skip It continued): T-Topic Sentence Skip It was the best childhood toy because it was fun to play with. A- Answer Questions It was fun to play with because Skip It could be played outside and with friends. P- Prove It When I was little I would stay outdoors for hours skipping with my friend, Stephanie. E- Examples We would skip together, laughing and competing to see who could get the most skips. S- Summarize Nothing else brought us as much joy and fun as our brightly colored Skip Its!

7 CONCLUSION PARAGRAPH The final paragraph of your essay; the end of your paper Make a final impression/get your point across to the reader Never bring in new ideas Follow CAT C- Controlling Idea A- Attack the topic (restate the thesis) T- Thought (final) for audience Summary (Use for EXPOSITORY) Restates the thesis Example: Penguins are amazing creatures. Their dedication, hard work and survival instincts make them one of the Arctic s strongest animals. Penguins will forever be my favorite animal. Recommendation (Use for PERSUASIVE) Supports an idea/cause Makes a plea for action Example: Recycling is crucial to our environment so why not give it a try? Not only will you feel good about making a difference within your community; but you ll also make a lasting impact on our earth and help preserve our planet. Do it. It s worth it.
