9 Launch of Ex libris ex oriente, a manuscripts ownership marks online database. It will gather together any type of ownership marks (from the simple min kutub fulān, to more elaborate reading notes, and waqf statements). Indeed these carry crucial information about many aspects of the book culture in the Middle East: about the history of libraries and collections, the circulation of books and ideas, the intellectual activity, the reading practices and the biography of scholars, etc. A critical amount of this material being difficult to gather alone, this is a collaborative online project. The answer of TIMA is awaited regarding its funding. Collaboration to the Catalogue des Manuscrits en écriture arabe des bibliothèques de Belgique, with Prof. F. Bauden; I am responsible for the codicological descriptions of the manuscripts. The first volume, about the ancient collection of Arabic manuscripts in the University of Liège General Library, should be published in Participation to the research programme of the IFAO (Institut Français d Archéologie Orientale, Cairo) about Egypt fortifications, from the Ayyubid period to Muḥammad ʿAlī ( ). I will more specifically deal with the fortifications linked to the harbour facilities and the mosque of Damietta. The programme lasts from September 1 st, 2012 until August 31 st,
10 Summary of the PhD dissertation The Egyptian recension of the Thousand and One Nights. Codicological study, with a critical edition, a translation and a linguistic and literary analysis of Jānšāh tale The Thousand and One Nights have fascinated millions of readers and have spawned a variety of scholarly literature. Nevertheless, the analyses of tales are based on existing editions of the Arabic text, none of them being completely reliable: one needs to turn back to the manuscripts, only they conceal a trustworthy version of the text. However, since Zotenberg s classification of the manuscripts of the Nights in the end of the 19 th century, research on the manuscripts has not really progressed. One of the groups Zotenberg described, called now the ZER, Zotenberg's Egyptian Recension, or simply the Egyptian Recension, gathers together the manuscripts containing exactly 1001 nights, copied in Egypt in the end of the 18 th or in the beginning of the 19 th century. All the manuscripts of the ZER are in four volumes and present the same distribution of nights; they share many other codicological features. A precise codicological analysis of each of those manuscripts was carried out, with a special interest for the papers, the scripts, and the bindings or original lack of binding. The collected information was compared with the conclusions of the literary and philological study of each manuscript s text in a complete approach to the manuscripts, seen as objects as well as texts. The Nights were written for the bourgeoisie, in their own language, Middle-Arabic. A close study of the language of the manuscripts provided information on this level of language still little known. The study was carried out on Jānšāh tale, and a synoptic critical edition confronting the manuscripts text to the 19 th -century editions of Būlāq and Calcutta II, collated for the occasion and a French translation of the latter were prepared. Next to the linguistic study, a literary study of the tale, mainly narratological, and an analysis of the collation results were realised. In brief, codicological analyses provided useful information for the research in codicology, for our knowledge of the use and spread of the manuscripts, and for their classification, a prerequisite for the philological part of the research, notably for the critical edition. The analysis of the text s language makes an important contribution to a neglected field. The text of the critical edition constitutes a solid basis for the investigations into the contents of the story. 10
