Spine abraded, front cover with scattered stains. Else very good. A revised text of the very first Hawaiian bibliography, printed in 1868 in the HAWAIIAN CLUB PAPERS. Hunnewell was a contributor to that effort. In the preface to this work he writes: "This bibliography of the Hawaiian Islands contains additions to the 'Catalogue,' that appeared among the Club Papers, and, with a supplement also added, may not improperly be considered the most complete work of its kind. This edition has been arranged in such a manner as to present, in each opened volume, printed text at the right and a blank page for notes on the left. A brief introductory sketch of the Discovery and Civilization of the Hawaiian Islands is also given." The authoritative source for many years, it is still not entirely obsolete. The limitation statement on the verso of the titlepage states: "Edition of one hundred copies quarto." Forbes indicates that copies do not appear to have been put on general sale, and they were issued in either the green half morocco and red boards as seen here or in printed wrappers. This copy is from the library of the author. Hunnewell was a Boston book collector and bibliographer. His father, James Hunnewell, became familiar with the islands when the ship he was on was sold to Hawaiian chiefs. The senior Hunnewell was responsible for collecting the payment in sandalwood and then selling it in China. As a result, he spent several months in the islands and became friendly with the local populace. In 1820 he arrived in Honolulu as second mate on the brig Thaddeus, the ship bearing the first American missionaries as well as the first printing press there. He later developed a significant business in Hawaii which grew into the commercial house later known as C. Brewer & Company. Though he returned to Charlestown, Massachusetts, he spent the rest of his life actively engaged in exporting goods to Hawaii and California. Part of his considerable fortune was given to found Oahu College. FORBES $ Huntress, Keith: A CHECKLIST OF NARRATIVES OF SHIPWRECKS AND DISASTERS AT SEA TO 1860, WITH SUMMARIES, NOTES AND COMMENTS.
