2 INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS ENTOMOLOGIA HELLENICA Criteria for paper acceptance. Submitted papers can be from any country. They should be written in English, have an extended summary in Greek and present original research data in any field of Entomology, Acarology or Nematology. Papers in French can also be accepted. In this case, an extended summary in English is also required. A limited number of short review articles can be published each year. All papers should meet high quality standards. They should be concise but easily understood. Manuscripts should not exceed 40 double- space 2cm-margin pages, written on one side only, tables and figures included. Fragmentation of data from same experiment to more than one papers is not encouraged. Data on same or even relative subjects should be presented in the same paper for comprehensive information. Paper organization. Manuscripts should, be submitted electronic (via to stefandr@agro.auth.gr) and consist of the following, each starting on a separate page, chapter headings in the center in capitals: 1) T i t l e p a g e: title and name(s) of author(s) in capital letters, institute(s) address(es) in small letters, common and scientific or only scientific name(s) of insects (genus and species only) should be used in the title, the name and address of author responsible for publication should be shown in the upper right corner of the title page. 2) A b s t r a c t: it should provide specific summarized information in no more than 200 words. 3) T e x t: in successive order, introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion or results and discussion, acknowledgment. In the introduction section, a short review of key relevant bibliography and the purpose of the work should be presented. In the materials and methods, the information should be concise but clear enough for someone who may want to use the same methodology. Results should be condensed, self explanatory and not repeated in the text, tables and figures. The discussion should be limited to the importance of the results, comparison with other relevant information and conclusions. Discussion of pertinent literature should be limited to the absolute necessary. (extended summary in Greek): it should not exceed 400 words. If the authors do not know Greek, translation of their summary will be taken care of by the editor. 5) R e f e re n c e s: only published papers or papers which are in press are included in this chapter, all in alphabetical order, according to the Harvard system. (1981) or (Girolami et al. 1981) and Wigglesworth (1965) or (Wigglesworth 1965), dual authorship is indicated by use of both authors names. In case of more than one references by 6) T a b l e s: they should be short, self-explanatory, numbered with arabic numbers. Each table should be placed on a separate page. 7) F i g u r e s: they should contribute significantly to the paper. All lines, curves, symbols and numerals should be thick and/or big enough to be easily seen when reduced to fit the contributes to clarity. On the back of each figure the name of the author, the paper title and the number of the figure should be indicated. Figure legends should be typed on separate pages and contain sufficient information so that the figures are self-explanatory. 8) F o o t n o t e s: unpublished reports and theses should be cited in the text as footnotes or parenthetically and not listed in the references section. In the first case they should be indicated by consecutive superscript numbers. 9) R u n n i n g h e a d: nd abbreviated title of 70 characters and spaces at maximum. 10) K e y w o r d s: a short list of key words or short phrases should be included for fast perception of the paper subject and for indexing. General information-instructions. Complete scientific names of insects (genus, species, author, order. family) should be given the first time a species is mentioned in the abstract and in the text. The metric system should be used for all results e.g. ml, cm, g, cm/sec etc. Temperatures should be in degrees Celcius. Accepted papers are published in order of receipt. The date of receipt will be shown as a title subscript. Papers which require extensive changes or are not written according to the above instructions will be returned for rewriting. Papers cannot be published until the author has read

3 Preface The International Symposium on Scale Insect Studies is a well-established meeting, which deals with Coccoidea. The Symposia are open to all scientists who are interested in working with issues and activities related to scale insects. The XIIth ISSIS meeting was held in Chania, Crete, Greece from 6 th -9 th April, 2010, hosted by Sofia Gounari, George Stathas and Panagiotis Milonas. The symposium was attended by 75 participants representing 28 countries. The journal Entomologia Hellenica, published by the Hellenic Entomological Society, offered to publish papers presented in the XIIth ISSIS in a special issue. Therefore papers published in this issue of Entomologia Hellenica were presented at the XIIth ISSIS. All papers published in this issue have been subject to the normal refereeing procedure of the journal and Dr Chris Hodgson edited each accepted manuscript at its final stage. On behalf of the local organising committee I would like to thank the editor of the Journal Entomologia Hellenica Prof. M. Savopoulou-Soultani for agreeing in the publication of these papers in the journal and the secretariat Dr S. Andreadis for his assistance in the preparation of the issue.
