1 PENNSAUKEN INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL Incoming 5th and 6th Grade Summer Reading Program for Summer 2017 Dear Pennsauken Intermediate School Student, Attached you will find a copy of your summer reading assignments for the upcoming school year. Requirements : All students are required to read two books of their choice: one fiction and one non-fiction. Try your best to choose books that are a minimum of 100 pages. All students are encouraged to read more than the 2 required books. In fact, if you read 10 books, you may receive a FREE BOOK from Barnes and Noble. Please see attached forms for specific details. You may also want to check out your local TD Bank for reading incentives that may earn students $10 toward opening an account or deposited into an existing account at TD Bank!! If you choose to participate in the Barnes and Noble Reading Incentive, you must take your completed forms to Barnes and Noble to receive the free book. These forms do not need to be returned to school. All students will be required to complete two separate assignments to go along with their summer reading books. Summer Reading Assignments: 1. Read a fiction book that is approximately 100 pages 2. Read a non-fiction book that is approximately 100 pages 3. Complete book report for your fiction book 4. Complete non-fiction creative project All assignments will be collected on Friday, September 8, These required assignments will be compiled, and you will earn a certificate for up to 10 points. toward one Language Arts test grade of your choice. You may redeem the certificate during any marking period you choose. In addition, there will be a special celebration during the month of September to recognize students accomplishments of their required summer reading assignments. All summer reading will be available on the district s website: Extra copies of the assignments will also be available in the Intermediate School Main Office as well as in the children s section of the Pennsauken Public Library. 2 Fiction book writing assignment Write a book report following the outline below. The report must include all information outlined below and written in paragraph form. Book reports should be typed and printed out or written neatly on lined paper. 1. The Setting Write a paragraph (5-7 sentences) describing the setting (time and place). How did the author help you visualize the setting? What words did the author use? 2. Plot Write a paragraph summary (5-7 sentences) detailing the key events in the story. 3. The Characters Who are the characters in the story? Choose the top 3-5 characters: write their names and one sentence about each character that describes who they are. Choose 2 of those characters and compare and contrast them. Write a paragraph (5-7 sentences) explaining how they are alike and/or different. 4. Theme Write a paragraph (5-7 sentences) explaining the theme in your novel. What is the message or lesson the author wants us to learn from reading this book? How do you know this? Give 2-3 examples from the story that support the author s message. 5. Conclusion It s important to give your opinion! Write a paragraph (5-7 sentences) explaining to which audience you would recommend this book. Provide reasons explaining why you would recommend this book to the specific audience you chose. Be sure to use text evidence when supporting your response.

See the attached rubric for grading s.

4 Option #1: Create a soundtrack Pick three songs that represent or relate to the central your book. Write a two - three sentence explanation for each song, explaining what specific part(s) of for which you would use the song and the how the lyrics relate. Your explanation should include references to specific lines from the songs however you do not need to print out copies of the lyrics. Present your soundtrack in the form of a CD booklet or album cover. Option #2: Create an advertisement poster Create a movie poster advertising your nonfiction book. This may be completed on any type of paper you choose: poster paper, construction paper, etc. The poster should include: - title and author of - a picture representing the central idea or topic of - two quotes or facts from that support the central idea or topic - a rating of and a paragraph (5-7 sentences) explaining the rating (the rating should be out of 1 to 5 stars) Option #3: Create a painting, collage or sculpture and explanation This should be a representation of the central your book. Along with your visual representation you should include a one paragraph (5-7 sentences) explanation of the representation and how it is related to specific central you read. Visual representations can include: - Original drawing - Original painting - Collage - Sculpture made of clay or other materials
