1 Assignment #9 AMERICAN LIT AND COMP Ms. Kelleher s Class ACT ONE: A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry Hold fast to deams, for if dreams die, Life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly. by Langston Hughes l. Based on our previous study of literary terminology, write down the definition of the literary term: metaphor 2. Give one of your own examples of metaphor: 3. Look in the section of the American Literature textbook called LITERARY TERMS (p. 1175). Look up the formal definition of the literary term: metaphor and read it. 4. Write the formal definition of the metaphor write everything that is written about this literary term metaphor in the space below: 5. What is the metaphor in the Langston Hughes statement above ( Hold fast cannot fly )? 6. Using your own words and words from the definition in the text, analyze/explain in depth the metaphor in Langston Hughes statement above. You must write 3 complete sentences (and you can write more sentences if you want to.) When you write your 3 complete sentences about the metaphor in Langston Hughes statement, also use another literary term that we have previously studied: imagery. Read everything that is described on p up to where it says ACT ONE (stop at ACT ONE). Now, write in your own words a description of what the audience sees up on the stage when the audience is looking at the stage (before any actors come on stage). Write at least seven (7) complete descriptive sentences, or, more if you want to.
