Children s Literature Binnie Kaur

Cinderella

Caldecott The Snowy Day reminds me of my childhood days. The use of bright dark colors made me look at every part of the picture. The story draws the reader into it, and take us back in our childhood days. This book speaks a story of every child, who loves SNOW.

Molly Bang Twelve Dancing Princesses

Newbery When I sat down to read this book, I thought to myself it was going to be boring. I was wrong. This books talks about love, longing for a complete family, and Sarah s loyalty to the family. How the family grew from lack of a mother s love to having a new mother in their house. The book showcased depression, loneliness but had a happy ending.

Poetry Denys Cazet Night poems are loved by all children. It gives them a sense of security. As if everything is going to be ok when they wake in the morning. This book had a collection of night poems. I myself liked stories of stars, moon, always wanted to sleep in my veranda with my grandmother.

Orbis Pictus Children of the Great Depression Russell Freedman

Orbis Pictus Children of the Great Depression Russell Freedman (cont.) We all have read about the Great Depression of 1930 s, but none of us can imagine how it must have been like to people who survived this unfortunate tragedy. I think this book represents realism. The photography, every detail in this book is fascinating. I couldn t help but look at the pictures and film the entire scene in my mind as I shuffled through each page. It feel as if this book is a shadow of our history of the Great Depression.

Children s Literature Exploration Ch.6 When I read Mother Goose books for my scavenger hunt project, I felt like I was a kid again. This project has been the most memorable and learning experience for me.

Multicultural Exploration Harlem and Grandma and me at the Flea are like two complete opposite Worlds. From writing to the illustrations, the readers can feel the different emotions provoked by these books.

Multicultural Exploration (cont.) After reading Funny in Farsi, I believe that it s a story of every child who has migrated to the U.S, with his or her family. I laughed and laughed while reading this book because I felt as if Firoozeh had written a story of my life and family. I told my mother how similar Firoozeh s story is to our lives. I think Firoozeh has captured every memory of my growing up years in the U.S.

Whittington A great piece of literature for children, I had a smile on my face when I began to read this book. I read few chapters to my little brother and he loved it. He was just fascinated by a story that had talking animals. Along with a good sense of humor, Whittington also has many great story themes such as family, love, courage etc. This book can serve as a foundation for kids, who are beginning to realize what friendship means. And how important it is to make friends in life.

Individual Project Christmas Poetry When I was searching for my topic, I had only one thing in my mind that I want to make a book that every child can benefit from. I love Christmas and so does everyone else. I selected very simple poems for 2nd or 3 rd graders. I believe that such books can be fun and a learning experience, especially for children with different ethnic backgrounds.

My Favorites My most favorite book out of the collection of books I read for children s literature is The Flying Witch. It is a Classic, yet very simple and enjoyable. I loved the illustrations and the story.

My Favorites (cont.)

Conclusion I have to admit that Children s Literature has been a major learning experience for me. For someone who grew up in a different cultural to get familiarized with Mother Goose, Red Ridding Hood, Cinderella is a big accomplishment in itself. I learned about American Literature and with my cultural knowledge I am happy to walk out with different perspectives of both these worlds.
