1 NILES' REGISTER COMPLETE The Weekly Register; Niles Weekly Register, Niles National Register. A Complete Run in 76 volumes. Hezekiah Niles, William Ogden Niles, Jeremiah Hughes, and George Beatty, editors. Baltimore, Washington, DC, Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Volumes, [volume 76 in facsimile as published by Burt Franklin]. Index [ ]. Complete with ALL addenda and supplements. Niles Register was one of the great weekly magazines of the early nineteenth century with a national circulation comparable to today s Newsweek or Time. Hezekiah Niles founded the magazine in 1811 and served as its editor and publisher until He sought to bring a balanced perspective of national and world events to his readers. As a record of early nineteenth century American politics and economics, nothing compares to the over 30,000 pages of reprints of public documents, treaties, statistical data, articles on the War of 1812, the Mexican American War, the expansion of the nation, news from other newspapers, and a continued...

2 wealth of other information contained in Niles Register. Thomas Jefferson wrote, I have found it very valuable as a Repository of documents, original papers and the facts of the day, and the ease with which the index enables us to turn to them. The Register was mailed out every Saturday with one rare interruption in circulation during the War of 1812 when all the employees one small boy excepted were engaged in military duties defending Baltimore. Niles Register essentially ceased publication with the June 27th, 1849 issue. Three single issues of volume 76 were published in September of 1849, numbers 13, 14, and 15; numbers 1 to 12 apparently were never published. Of the 76 volumes, 22 are in their original bindings (quarter, half, there quarter, or full leather) and housed in custom clamshell boxes with brown cloth sides and paper labels on the backs; the remaining 53 volumes are re-cased in uniform brown cloth with paper spine labels. The facsimile volume consisting of three issues of volume 76 is bound in blue cloth with gilt titling on the spine. The leather bindings are in very good About Niles' Register Niles republished the prospectus for The Weekly in volume one after his statement The Editor to the Public which appears on page one. He states: [T]he unusual number of subscribers already obtained, convinces the editor that his opinion was just as to the want of a work such as The Weekly Register is intended to be; but while so great success flatters his pride and provokes his exertion, it also alarms his fears, lest, in despite of all he can do, the public expectation may be disappointed, though to guard against this he has made some extensive as well as expensive preparations. The Weekly was published every Saturday at noon printed on a fine sheet of super-royal paper with a nonpariel [sic], or brevier, type, and contain 16 pages octavo at FIVE DOLLARS per annum, payable at the expiration of six months from the commencement of the publication, and annually thereafter. Two volumes were published every year, each containing 26 issues. It was delivered in the city of Baltimore and Precincts on the day of publication and carefully packed up and sent to subscribers at a distance by the first mail thereafter leaving the Post-office. In his history of Nile s Weekly Register, Norval Luxon states: The standard of editorial conduct that Niles set for himself and followed throughout his editorial career and which made the Register so valuable a source to students of the period was based on fairness, impartiality, and accuracy. Niles states in his editorial piece in volume one: Whatever may be our private opinions, we never will make ourselves liable to the charge of suppressing or neglecting to insert, any official paper belonging to a series of them laid off for the Register, All or None, is our motto.

3 condition, and there is an occasional lightly inked page, and occasional foxing. Yes, you can find digital copies of Niles Register online, but they do not equal the quality of type on paper in the bound volumes. Niles Register is perhaps the most valuable resource for the history of early nineteenth century America. It is rarely found complete, and it took many years to acquire the volumes that create this set which is beautiful in its shelf presence. (#20761) Price: $35, About Niles' Register / continued from Page 2 As reported in Niles' Register, the Democratic convention of 1840 created the first party platform. There were nine resolutions that affirmed the principles of the Democratic party. The ninth resolution states: That the liberal principles embodied by Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence and sanctioned in the constitution, which makes ours the land of liberty, and the asylum of the oppressed of every nation, have ever been cardinal principles in the democratic faith; and every attempt to abridge the present privilege of becoming citizens, and the owners of soil among us ought to be resisted with the same spirit which swept the alien and sedition laws from our statute book. About Creating this Set of Niles' Register I failed to state in my description that there was a gap in publication that started with the March issue of 1848 when Jeremiah Hughes suspended publication. The Weekly Register reappeared in with the July, 1848 issue published by George Beatty in Philadelphia. Little is known about Beatty, but he apparently was a novice at publishing when the opportunity to acquire the Register arose. However, he made a serious effort to revive the franchise, and ran it for a year but it was too little, too late. Beatty s journalistic inexperience showed too clearly in the paper s pages, and the Register s place in the marketplace disappeared. The last regular issue appeared in June, (W. H. Earle, Niles Register : Window on the World) I accepted the first fifty volumes of Niles Weekly Register on consignment and realized that the volumes were unsalable: a majority of them were disbound. I convinced my client to rebind the set and with the help of Vicki Lee, then head of conservation at the Maryland State Archives, and her dedicated team, and after many months I was in possession of an exceptional set of volumes. Not long afterward the set sold and I shipped them to their new owner, but only then did I realize the set was not complete because several volumes were lacking supplements and addenda, which I hunted down. I asked Vicki Lee to rebind the impacted volumes and add the missing material. Of the original fifty volumes, leather

4 bindings that appeared to be in very good condition were kept and protected in custom clamshell boxes that matched the specifications of the existing binding. The client who bought the fifty volumes asked me to complete the entire run of Nile s Register. Over three years I sought the remaining twenty-six volumes, which were difficult to obtain. I often bought volumes with missing issues and cobbled them together with single issues to form complete volumes. Vicki Lee did an outstanding job. 1. Niles, H[ezekiah]. The Agriculture of the U. States. [Wheeling (VA): Curtis, Printer, 1827]. 16p. Disbound. Caption title as issued. First leaf has a corner fox blotch and a small tear at blank lower corner, else scattered mild foxing. 8 6 PROCEEDINGS of the NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC and REPUBLICAN PARTY CONVENTIONS to ELECT a PRESIDENT and VICE PRESIDENT of the UNITED STATES SPANNING the YEARS A Collection of the Official Reports Resulting in the Nomination of Candidates Who Went on to Win, or Lose the White House; A Record of the National Issues Confronting the United States over 176 Years The process for nominating and electing a president has evolved since 1789 and continues to do so today. The caucus system was followed by the convention system starting in Political scientist V.O. Key, Jr. wrote, The new system, the convention, gave, or so it was supposed, the mass of party members an opportunity to participate in nominations. With the national convention came the emergence of the two-party system that we

7 know today. The democrats since 1832 and the republicans since 1856 have used the convention system to nominate their candidates for president. You need to look no further than the Presidential election this year to know the importance of national presidential nominating conventions. The proceedings of these conventions are essential to understanding what took place at each convention and yes some of them are available online but there is no substitute for holding the book in your hands. Presented here are reports on the proceedings of 79 national Democratic and Republican conventions that resulted in the nomination of Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates. Most of the proceedings that follow were difficult to obtain, especially those from the 19th and early 20th century. They are ephemeral and so this is not a complete record. A detailed list is available. Price: $10,000

The Fifth Annual Report is his first report on his design for the first urban park, Back Bay, in what would become Boston s Emerald Necklace of urban parks. The rationale behind the plan was very far from what was commonly understood as a park, as Olmsted painstakingly explained; the design was primarily a sanitary improvement, the main feature of which was a storage basin for the storm waters of Stony Brook. A second aim was to restore the salt marsh to its original condition. [Cynthia Zaitzevsky in Frederick Law Olmsted and the Boston Park System]. A seminal work in the history of landscape architecture. (#17401) $ Tourgee, Albion W. The Invisible Empire: Part I. Beveled brown cloth boards; titling in gilt on the front cover and spine. By the 1860s Niagara had become a major tourist attraction with resulting environmental damage. Frederick Law Olmsted frequently visited the Falls while working in Buffalo, and with Frederic Edwin Church, he led a campaign to establish the Niagara Falls Reservation. This report is the single most important document of the campaign. In a spirit of patriotism what remains of Niagara s beauty should be preserved; what is lost should be restored. Only the power of the state can accomplish this [p24]. Olmsted succeeded in his campaign by presenting the governor with petitions signed by many of the intellectuals of the day including, among them, Emerson, Carlyle, Ruskin, Longfellow, Eliot, and Dana. Through his efforts Niagara Falls became the first state park in the United States.
