8 Wednesday, October 25, 2017 Pick up an allusion and allegory handout from inbox and glue it into your Writer s Notebook. Read it. QW - What causes revolutions to occur? Do you foresee any beginning revolutions in America or the world? What is the allusion picture alluding to? Wizard of Oz What is the difference between allusion and allegory? Allusion is referring to (hinting at) another piece of text. Allegory is like one big metaphor where the narrative story represents or symbolizes something else.

Circle or Star important points or ideas you want to discuss Answer the essential question (What is the Russian Revolution and how did it impact the region and the world?) Do not lose your notes! You are trying to solve the mystery of Animal Farm the entire 3 rd quarter. These notes will be your key to unlocking the mystery of which animal represents which real-life person from history.

10 Thursday, October 26, 2017 Characterization Chart cut and tape it in You will be trying to complete this chart all quarter, but I recommend using a pencil in case your allegory answers are incorrect. Write small! You will be adding info throughout the book. While reading Animal Farm, students will have a section of their Writer s Notebook to keep notes and analysis of the book: Write a summary at the end of each chapter so you can remember what happens. Try to complete the characterization chart as you read each chapter. Don t get behind!

11 Thursday, October 26, 2017 Read chapter 1 of Animal Farm (17:58) Write a summary of chapter 1. This should be the most important info/details and characters from this chapter. This will help you to study later! Answer Chapter 1 questions. Always answer thoroughly. Fill in your character chart for what you have read so far. Write SMALL so you have room throughout the book. ***You will be taking a test at the end of this novel.***

Pick up a copy of the ism notes and tape them into your Writer s Notebook Discuss / overview of the ism definitions Work on chapter 1 summary, questions and Animal Farm character chart. Remember, be thorough. You will use this to study! Read your outside novel if you have any extra time.

13 Political / Economic system notes Capitalism - An economic system that features private ownership of the means of production (such as factories, offices, and shipping enterprises) and in which market forces determine the way in which goods are produced and the means by which income and profit are distributed is called capitalism. Socialism - Socialism is a political and economic system in which most forms of economically valuable property and resources are owned or controlled by the public or the state. Still some private property possible in this system. Communism - Communism is a political and economic system in which the major productive resources in a society such as mines, factories, and farms are owned by the public or the state, and wealth is divided among citizens equally or according to individual need. Totalitarianism - It is the total in totalitarianism that gives the best clue to its meaning. The term refers to the type of government that attempts to assert total control over the lives of its citizens. Fascism - a political system headed by a dictator in which the government controls business and labor and opposition is not permitted
